Hebrew book: Tiktin community records #rabbinic

Tomer Brunner

Dear Rav-Siggers,

I would like to let you know about a relatively new book, which
I find very interesting.

The Hebrew book is titled "Pinkas Kehal Tiktin" / Israeli national
academy for science/ Mordechai Nadav.
Vol. 1 published 1997; Vol. 2 published 2000.
It contains records >from the community of Tykocin, Poland (Tiktin in
Yiddish) >from the period 1621-1806.

I've found the names of some known rabbis also >from other
communities at that time or even their family members mentioned. It
has also a great index with names of persons and places and even of
terms used in the records. It has also a dictionary of the terms.
The book is available in Israeli universities.

Regards,
Tomer Brunner, Israel

I have just noticed on the front flap of the dustjacket of the
Yudel Flior "Dvinsk" book the following:

"He left behind sixteen manuscripts of about 80,000 words each of
which this is the first to be published. The originals are all in Yiddish."
This is astonishing! If the other manuscripts are half as interesting as
the first, this is a real treasure trove.
Now comes the question: do any of you South African genners know
about this, or know where those manuscripts might be? >>

A subsequent inquiry was directed to Prof Joseph Sherman, noted SA
Yiddishist, who knew Maurice Flior, son of Yudel, but was not aware of any
extant manuscripts. Nothing is listed in the archives fo the SAJBOD. The
book on Dvinsk was published by Dial Press circa 1959.

Re: Looking for details on the lineage of Abraham Cahan #lithuania

Joel Ratner

Roy Ogus inquired as to the family of Abraham Cahan, the founder of the
Forward.

The best source of information I know of is the autobiography of A. Cahan,
"Bleter fun mein leben - Erster band - In Der Alter Hayim", New York, 1926. [Pages >from my life - First Vol. - In the Old Days]. On page 140, Cahan mentions his maternal family, the Goldarbeiters. The Goldarbeiter family is also listed in the 1858 Vilna Revision List.

A brief glance at the text reveals there are other family members mentioned, although it is beyond the scope of this message to find them all [the book is 502 pages in Yiddish].

The book includes photographs of his parents and others.

Does "Berdiansh" ring a bell with anyone? Could it be some type of

Given Mr. Altman's mention of the town of Korostyshev, I think that
Berdichev was "Berdiansh" which is probably the mistranscription made by an
EIDB volunteer.

Korostyshev is northwest of and not far >from Berdishev, where my
grandfather Isidor Belkowsky was born. I've not quite yet made out his
passport, but >from the handwritting on it, I have the impression that
Isidor's mother came >from Korostyshev.

Viennese Mental Hospital "Steinhof" #general

Yacov asked asked about the Viennese Mental Hospital Steinhof:

"Is there any available information on patients records for the *Am
Steinhof* mental hospital in Wien, Austria?

The person I am researching was supposedly admitted to this institution
around 1928, and probably transported to Poland between 1938 and 1942."

My comment:

Information about Austrian victims is often available through the
Dokumentationsarchiv des oesterreichen Widerstands

www.doew.at

This site also has a link to an exhibition about the history of the Steinhof
institution (which is now called "Baumgartner Hoehe" since the term
"Steinhof" had become a household word in Vienna), its uses and abuses as

This is most probably town Berdyansk (current spelling per ShtetlSeeker)
There are 12 entries for this shttel in the JGFF database.
Town is located in the southern part of the modern Ukraine on the Sea of
Azov near near larger towns Mariupol and Melitopol.

My ultimate purpose is to track down my family lineage on my maternal and
paternal grandparents side. My maternal grandfather, who took the name
Sheff," (>from Korestoschewski) is >from the Ukraine, and my paternal
grandfather, who took the name "Altman," (>from Barrett, or a version
thereof) came >from a city called "Tarnopol," which was intermittently
Russian, Polish, and Austrian, but at the time he lived there, it was part

Although I have already thanked all who responded to my question about
"Kessinow, Russia" personally, I wanted to post a general thank you because
I have gotten so many responses.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that this is Kishinev, Moldava. I will now
concentrate my search there and hopefully prove the connection. I will
attempt to contact HIAS and the Balch Institute to find out what information
they can provide for me.

I am grateful to all of JewishGen.
