Maharshal is an acronym >from the first letters in Hebrew
of Moreinu Harav Shlomo Luria -- Our teacher Rabbi
Solomon Luria. There were many Rabbis known by such acronyms and naturally
many started MAH for
Moreinu HaRav -- e.g. Maharal of Prague, Maharam Rothenburg, Maharil
Diskin, Maharsha, Maharshal, Maharsham.
But others might be known by the initials of their famous
work -- the great Rabbi Yeshaya Horowitz(buried beside Rambam [another
acronym] in Tiberias)
was called Sheloh after Shenei Luchot Haberit -- the
Two Tablets of the Law).
Best wishes,

Can anyone help me find an address for Joseph Schwartz,
furriour, lived in Grand Concourse, in the Bronx for the
year 1930?

Wife would be Jennie or Jennifer. Our library cannot get a
1930 City Directory for NY for several months and I have no
other way to get it.

Thank you in advance

Seeking Katz & Harris in New Jersey #general

Hershon <hershon@...>

I am looking for the following ladies who are cousins of us
here. The trouble is although we know of them, they almost
certainly dont know of us. We estimate they are in their late
50's, early 60's, and have 5 childen that we know of between
them. They are Nancy Katz, Barbara Harris and Dr. Elizabeth
Harris, all daughters of Sydney E Harris. They were born and
brought up around West & South Orange, New Jersey, and went
to Temple B'Nai Jeshurun in Short Hills. We have e mailed the
Synagogue as their father was a life long member, only dying
in 1988, but have not had any reply as they probably think we
are e mail spammers or something! We are based near Liverpool
in England, so its not so easy to track them down. Any offers
of help would be very appreciated. This is the last step in
this particular branch of the family and it would be so
wonderful to contact them as we have all the family history
going back to 1800 now. It would be great to share it. many
thanks for your time

Julius BLOCK?BLOAK St. Louis, MO 1923 #general

desrx <desrx@...>

I have received a very poor copy of the nautralization certificate
for Tillie (Wyman) Lentzner, 23 Septmber 1923, St. Louis, MO. She
was the wife of Herman Lentzner. Signing the attached petition was
her brother-in-law David Lentzner and a Julius Block/Bloak. David
Lentzner's wife was also named Tillie and I have just received an
obit giving David's Tillie's maiden name as Block. So perhaps Julius
was a relative. Also have another Lenczner/Lentzner, Adolph born
about 1872, also in St. Louis. According to the 1920 Census he was
living with wife Mary (abt 1875), and three children Shirley (sp -
male), Beatrice and Sarah. This Adolph maybe the same who accompanied
his niece Bruche Lentzner to the US in 1911. Believe this "Bertha/
Birdie" is actually a Lieberman who married Louis Blumenfeld of St.
Louis. Apparently Tillie (Wyman) Lentzner is somehow related to the
late Eugene Wyman of Los Angeles, CA.

If you have a connection to Julius or the others, please contact me.

Conference Tapes #belarus

Linda S. <lindashu@...>

I attended the conference in Toronto which was outstanding. Every session
was taped and attendees could order the tapes for a minimal charge. Whether
those tapes are available for purchase now, I don't know. Perhaps someone
from the Toronto conference committee could respond.

audio tapes from conference available #belarus

Penny Gross <p.gross@...>

I am a member of the Toronto JGS and attended the conference here in Toronto. I

had the good fortune to already order and listen to tapes of the sessions I had
to miss because there were several occurring simultaneously.

In response to a request for tapes by Belarus SIG members, I checked into their
availability. If you go to the Toronto JGS website www.jgstoronto.ca
information about acquiring the tapes is available. There you will find a
contact email and phone number. You will be sent an order form on which each
session is listed by title and author.

The SIG meetings are not included on the order form so I assume they were not
recorded.

Crash course need to read Search database -RTR #belarus

Valerie Fox

I need a crash course in understanding where the records are for the town of
Baranovichi.

I have the 9 record groups, but under, "repository City" it lists Brest.

When I look at the archives for Brest, it says chronological year is from
1919.

I am interested in archival material pre- 1900's.
Where do I look?

I understand the archives is being closed for Novogrudok and I am
considering hiring a researcher. I presume it is Oleg. Am I correct?

I understood the handout at the Toronto seminar, but the one on the web
appears to be different.

Thanks for any help.

==I searched Google as suggested. I found three links. One of the links was
dead. That left two. One of these told me that I was on the website of "The
Genealogical Society." Since it didn't mention the country's name, I assumed
it was a society in Great Britain. The spelling bore me out.

I assume the Hyamson Collection is somewhere within the august wall or halls
of that Society, probably in what is termed ominously "The Lower Library,"
but I could not locate a link to it anywhere >from within the society's
website. I assume also that it is part of the Jewish collection at the
society.

I also assume that when Laurence Harris posed his question about the Hyamson
Collection, he was making a sincere inquiry and really wanted to know. If
someone asks for information >from another, it's always helpful to be given an
explanation or an answer and not to be forced to jump through
hoops--especially if such jumps lead nowehere.

Perhaps someone knowledgable will answer the question: What is the Hyamson
Collection? It doesn't need to be a long explanation--it can probably be done
in less than the 40 words that went into the response by David Kravitz.

Jerrold,

Could you give us the context in which the phrase below appeared (the
