Dear fellow Genners: When placing an inquiry, please be specific about
the subject matter. There are so many inquiries that I find it difficult
to read each one. I therefore ignore inquiries like "translation needed"
without mentioning the language. I also think that anyone who takes the
trouble to answer an inquiry deserves a PERSONAL response rather than a
general mass-mailed "thank you." It is common courtesy!

Dear friends,
I am trying to find a relative of my wife. His name is David. We are not
sure about his last name but we know that his grandfather's name is
SHMUELEVICH / SHMUELOVICH / SHMILOVICH/ SAMUELOVICH (maybe also David's
name).

The grandfather immigrated to England >from Poland - probably from
Komerow//v.
David should be in his fifties +. He visited in Israel at least one time
and we have even a picture of him as a very young man - but
unfortunately we lost the address in England (we do not name in which
city or town in England).

Is anyone can try to help us to find him or any other relatives?
Thank you.

I have been following the thread re what will be happening with this SIG. may I suggest we start by
everyone listing their family names and specifics on locations (not just "the East End" !)? I'm
sure that we will find much common ground just >from that. Here is my stuff:

Bukovina: Austrian "Crownland" #general

Marc M. Cohen <marccohen@...>

Dear All,

I'm afraid I must raise a point of difference with Shel's statement
that Bukovina was part of Galicia.

It is my understanding that Bukovina was never part of the Austrian
Galicia province, but rather had a quasi-limited autonomous status as
an "Austrian Crownland," which was different >from being a province.
Before WWI it was part of Austria, between the wars it was in
Romania, and now it has been divided, with Upper Bukovina in Ukraine
and what's left of Lower Buk in Romania.

Cheers,

Marc
