Where is Wendefurt? #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Dear Robert,

Usually I would answer this privately but the link below is worth
mentioning to JewishGen's members:
http://www.skalman.nu/third-reich/
The site is called "Third Reich Factbook" and is published by a
certain Mr. Marcus Wendel. He claims not to be a Nazi and the site is
supposed to be apolitical. He describes himself as a young Swede
whose hobby is history and military subjects.

The home page depicts a Wermacht (Army) soldier's photograph. The
site is very spartan and well organized. I browsed some of the pages,
mainly the information published about the Holocaust. They are very
accurate including the number of Jews killed by the Nazis. My first
judgment is that this is a serious site for those researching
information about the 3rd Reich. It is very likely not as apolitical
as his owner wishes to make it, but even so it contains a very rich
repository on the subject, including data about major concentration
camps and related sub-camps names.

This is the only site where I found reference to WENDEFURT being a
Nazi Polizei Station/School
<http://www.skalman.nu/third-reich/polis-schools.htm>. No doubt the
town exists in Germany. I wasn't able to establish where. Try to
search with Google (exact phrase search)
<http://www.google.com/advanced_search > and you will get a number of
links to this place. Seemingly today it is the location of a large
dam.

I keep insisting with people who are looking for information and
can't find them: if you can't find it try the Internet :-)

Good luck
Tom

My late grandfather was, so I have been told, sent >from Vienna in 1939 to
a labour camp called "Wendefurt" (this spelling may be incorrect). I
always assumed it to be in Germany, but my uncle, his son, now says that
it was near Vienna and that his father returned home each day or maybe each
week.

Seeking records about Polish doctors before & during the war #general

Alan Glixman

Hello

I have a family member, Marysia (Mira) HONIGSTOCK (nee BROKMAN) born 1907
in Lodz who was a paediatrician (a child specialist). Marysia did not
survive the war.

In the few years before the war I know she lived and worked in Krosno,
Poland. She was in Krosno in 1941 (as shown in the JewishGen Holocaust
database). She *may* also afterwards have been in the Lodz Ghetto,
perhaps even as late as 1944.

Firstly, I am wondering if there are any civil records for Polish doctors
that might be available for the years before the war (or records >from some
professional medical associations)?

Secondly, I am wondering if there is any documentation of doctors who
worked in either the Krosno Ghetto or Lodz Ghetto?

Any help or advice would be gratefully accepted.

Regards

Re: What is the Ceres Union? #general

jerome freed <jjfreed@...>

The Ceres Union is listed among the YIVO Landsmannshaften:

http://www.jgsny.org/yivo.htm

My father was a member; it seemed to be a kind of charitable
organization he had joined as a young man.

I think it's origin was as an agricultural organization, but I have not
even thought about until reminded by the recent query.

What Name is "Lilka" a diminutive of? #general

Dear group,

I have a Polish female relative whose first name I know as "Lilka".

Would anyone know what name Lilka might be a diminutive of?

I have searched the JewishGen and SIG archives and also the Polish Given

Large eastern europe Map: Thanks for suggestions #general

Jessica Tropp <jtropp@...>

Using advice >from multiple replies to my query about a wall- sized Eastern
European map, I ordered a 3 by 4 ft wall-sized map of Europe >from an online
vendor ( there are many - just enter "Europe wall map" into your search
engine). While there are several vendors that sell highly detailed
historical maps of areas of Europe, none of them covered the entire area I
needed . However, I realized that there are advantages to using a map of
the entire continent: it allows me to visually trace the journey >from "old
country" to the ports >from which ships to America departed. Even though it
will not give me the small-town detail I would like, I can still stick
flagged pins in the map at the coordinates for the smaller towns that are
not listed.

Then, as suggested by several people, I will take it to a copy shop and
enlarge the section I need the most ( Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Poland).
Many copy shops have a printer that will "posterize" a smaller image for
about $30. Thanks to those of you who reminded me of this simple fact!

Dear Geners,

I'm trying to find relatives of 3 men, deported >from Paris-Drancy to
Auschwitz by the convoy 27, on 9/2/1942.
after having escaped on the famous M.S. ST Louis to Cuba, forced back to
Europe in June 1939 and stranded in France!!
They survived in the departement Dordogne (France) >from 1939 to 1942.
Surname and names of them:
TROEDEL Leopold, bn 3/11/1903 in Vienna, Austria as his children, Erich,
bn 2/21/1929 and Walter, bn 7/2/1925
( the father was sent at differents moments to the concentration camps of
Gurs and des Milles)

Mrs TROEDEL Blanca, wife and mother, lived with them, was born GUNSBERGER
Blanca, in Vienna on 9/2/1902
but, at my acquaintance, not deported....

The 4 were on the point to have a special permit to sail (affidavit?) to
the States and received money >from a brother and a sister living in the
States but the irremediable occured before they could run away.

Any clue??

Thanks for answering.
