shel <shel@...>

We have a Herman BERCOVITZ in our tree. He lived came to the US and settled
in St. Paul in 1900 and then moved to Los Angeles. I believe he was from
Romania and his name was BERCOVICI.

More accurately he may have come >from Bukovina which was included at one
time in Galicia and now is part of Romania and Ukraine.

He married my great aunt Tina BRUCKER, also >from Romania.

I wonder if BERCOVITZ and BBERKOVITZ derive >from the same name, BERCOVICI or
are completely different names.

Corcisco, Latvia? #latvia

Marj Green <marjgreen@...>

Dear Latvia SIG,

Does anyone know the current name of the town/village of Corcisco, Latvia?

The name of the village comes >from a 1980 taped interview with Beila
FEIGELSON (daughter-in-law of my cousin, Chana GRUSIN FEIGELSON). Beila was
born in Dankere (Glazmanka, now Gostini) in 1905. When she was about 10
years old, she and her family ran away >from Russian troops who invaded
Dankere and took shelter for a few months in Corcisco. They first went to
Varklani, Latvia, and then got on a train to Corcisco. Eventually they
returned to Dankere.

I have tried the shtetl finder, mapquest, WOWW, and WOWW companion, but
haven't been able to find Corcisco. Any ideas?

I have been following the thread re what will be happening with this SIG.
may I suggest we start by everyone listing their family names and specifics
on locations (not just "the East End" !)? I'm sure that we will find much
common ground just >from that. Here is my stuff:

NAMES: Harris, Lakumski, Rachwelski, all >from The Mile End, Bow area: Eric
Street, Ernest Street. Originally >from Poland
Korsunski or Karsunski or Korsinski, Karson or Carson,
Breshenev or Breshenov, all >from the Stepney green area. Originally
from Ukraine.
Toffel. >from the Dalston area. Originally >from the Opole Lubielski / Josefow
nad Wista area of Poland
Lazarus, Feldman - Clapton / Hackney area. Originally >from Kiev. Ties to
Ridley Road Market and Duncan Terrace, Islington

My husband and I also have connections to Tyssen Primary school, John
Howard, grammar school, Woodberry Downs comprehensive and Stamford Hill Club.
All in the new boro of Hackney.

Hope this starts the ball rolling.

I have posted a photograph at Viewmate:
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html

I would appreciate any information on the photograph of my gggf Ansel
Asher SHEININ. He was born about 1825 and the family was probably living
in/near the towns of Dudin/Monastyrshchina, in Mstislavl uzyed, Mogilev
gubernia - Belarus. It is possible that they had moved to Ukraine by the
time this picture was taken. I was wondering if by looking at the
clothing whether one could determine if he was Hassidic. It also seems
to be a "studio" shot and the object he was leaning on to be a prop. Any
ideas as to what this object is? Thanks for your help.

Fw: Ukmerge Data #general

ourabey@...

Due to illness I have not been active in my genealogical research for
nearly a year and now want to get busy again. I have copies of memos
from 1999 discussing possible data and I need some assistance to
understand. The memos refer to town within the Ukmerge region such as
Utena, Boinike, Seta, Pozelvy, etc. Is there a map showing these areas.
Did we ever get the data >from these areas. They were included in what
was called Vilkomir District. If we got the data, are these towns named
on the data lists? In a different memo, also 1999, a town Trashkuny is
shown to have 1896 data as did Toviany. Pozelvy had 1888 data, Traupe is
shown with 1896, Ushpol with 1892 data, also Seta.Utena with 1893. The
memos were written by David Hoffman. What happened with this research.
Did we do it? Thank you. Any update will be helpful. Someone did write
me that the 1897 census for Ukmerge is available. Will it include the
city or the entire district. Do we know all the shtetls included in the
Ukmerge district Thanks again.

Am seeking information on the extended family of Sam LEWIS family of
Oil City, PA, Cincinatti, Ohio and later Berkeley, CA. Sam was a
wholesale grocer, married to the former Bertha BARNETT (born in Russia
March 04, 1878, died December 01, 1955 in Alameda, CA.)

Sam and Bertha were the parents of four sons: Dave, Nathan, or Nate
(May 27, 1899-November 06, 1987) who was married to a woman named
Eleanor, and twin sons, doctors Julius (September 12, 1912- October 23,
1974, who was nicknamed Jay and married to Emma Rose?) and Robert
(September 12, 1912-November 07, 1991), or Bob, who was married to the
former Sylvia RABINOWITZ.

I don't know where Dave was born, where or when he died. Dave's
brothers were all born in Pennsylvania and they all died in California.

Any information on the LEWIS, BARNETT, or RABINOWITZ families would
be appreciated.

Casimir (the more English spelling) is a Slavic name. Jews often had
secular names common to whatever region they lived in, so it is not
impossible that he was Jewish, but that is not his Hebrew name, if he is.
