How to send Holiday greetings and help support GerSig and JewishGen #germany

GerSig has received the following message for posting to the GerSig
Discussion Group:

SUBJECT: Shana Tova
Dear all.
I would like to send a Happy New Year to all of us, in Israel and in the
Diaspora.
XXX city / nation Researching the surnames: (snip)

We do not post such messages for a number of reasons. Rather we encourage
our members to post holiday, thank you, simcha and other greetings to
the JewishGen Wall of Honor.

This is done at:
<http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/Honors.ihtml>

Prior messages posted at the Wall of Honor can be viewed via:

The financial crisis at JewishGen makes your financial contributions
especially important at this time. Dwindling resources at JewishGen
make it especially important now to discourage postings that are not
substantive. At GerSig we do allow short holiday greetings to be added to
real Q & A messages >from members.

Please help support JewishGen and send your greetings with a donation.

Re: searching GRASSGRUEN, Cleveland 1904 #general

rob.e <rob.e@...>

Have you considered that the family may have changed their name to
Grassgreen or Greengrass both are common names?

Green seems to be the popular translation of Groen or Gruen or Gruyn.

I have just discovered that a great uncle of mine arrived through Ellis
Island in 1904. On the ship's manifest he wrote that he was on his way to
visit the Grassgrun (umlat over the u; could also be Grassgruen) family in
Cleveland.

Does anyone know of a Grassgruen family?

Some time ago, we posted a message about the formation of a new
"Jewish Genealogy Society of Hungary" that was supposed to be opening
an office in Budapest. Can anyone provide me with information about
this organization? I would, in particular, appreciate having the
name of an English-speaking contact person.

Thanks!

Searching for Mordecai SMULYANOVICH #general

Edward Walter Fabisak Jr. <kasibafe@...>

Hello Everybody:

I’m looking for information concerning Mordecai SMULYANOVICH (SMULYAN)
and his siblings. He apparently came to the United States in the 1880s
from Latvia. He was married to a woman named Katie. They had at least
two sons: Herschel and Abraham. Abraham was married to Ida Kaseff. I
am especially interested in Mordecai’s male siblings and their male
offspring because I have reason to believe that one of them married my
grandmother’s paternal aunt. My grandmother was Jeanette SACHS
(1890-1973). She and her sister, Anna, arrived in NY separately between
1909 and 1913 and stayed with an uncle whose surname was SMULYAN at 33
Union in Manhattan. I hope that, if I can identify the SMULYANS at this
address, I can trace back to Jeanette’s family in Latvia. I have been
unable to find any information about Grandma Jenny before 1913 because
she came to America with false documents. She apparently belonged to a
Zionist cell in Riga; and when her boyfriend was arrested, she fled with
a deceased friend’s papers. She never told us much about her past
because she always had a phobia about being deported.
If anyone can help me with information about Mordecai SMULYANOVICH and
his siblings, I certainly would appreciate it.

How can I find a family that lived in Tunis in 1943? #general

Bob Cohler <sudsvillebob@...>

I am trying to find a family that I knew in Tunis, Tunisia in 1943 (yes,
during the war.) The family was Dr. Joseph ENRIQUEZ, living at XX Rue
Emile Duclaux Tunis. He was a dentist- note that I said "was" because I
think that he and his wife are no longer living. They did have a
daughter,Paulette, a son-in-law.Marcel and a granddaughter, Simonette
kiving with them. I was back in Tunis 3 years ago, but even the Police
could not tell me where the street was,as in the 1950's, there was some
sort of ethnic cleansing in Tunisia. The family was Jewish, but I don't
know what Temple they belonged to Incidentally, I never did know
Paulette's married name. Any clues, help or anything that can put me on
the road to reconnecting with them will be greatly appreciated. Thank
you for listening to me.

Seeking information - Monticello NY 1946 #general

Iris Folkson <ifolkson@...>

On the main street of Monticello, New York, there was an antique shop.
from interviewing relatives, there is a recollection that the owner was
related to the GLICK's originally >from Starokonstantinov (Old
Constantine), Ukraine. His mother's given name was probably Hendel
(Annie). Hendel was affiliated with the fur manufacturer GOTTESMAN &
GLICK. Does anyone remember the antique shop? If you do, do you recall
the name of the owner?
