researching VAZ MARTINEZ, VAZ MARTIN, MARTIN #general

keith martin <keithmart@...>

Hi Listers,

having been a lurker for a few days, I thought I would post a query of my
own.

My ancestors came to the UK in the early 1800's, but I am having problems
finding Vaz Martinez names, A Martin search throws up a lot of hits.

In amongst the Martins is an occupation "Wholesale slopseller" which sounds
fun!

Does anyone know exactly what that was?

Regards

Keith Martin

The menaing of the word komisar? #general

Iffersas7@...

This is a question that I've been wondering about.
Since I began reading about Jewish life
in Eastern Europe. The word komisar and variations
of it come up.
I don't believe it's an english word.

I think it maybe russian but I am not sure.
Can someone tell me what it means?

My grandmother's maiden name was Komisar and her father
was >from Slutsk. He spoke fluent Russian, Yiddish, and English.

I was wondering how his last name could be related to the meaning of that word.

Hope someone can help.

British military personnel serving in Bergen Belsen after WWII #general

KLOOGWEIN@...

I am trying to track down a relative, BERNARD KLUGMANN,
who escaped >from Austria to England in the early years
of W.W.II, served at Bergen Belsen with the Military
Government of the British Army of the Rhine,
and supposedly left England for the USA in 1948.

Has anyone done research involving the British
Army of the Rhine stationed at Bergen Belsen?

Thanks.

Re: Why the name change? #general

Steven Sherman <ShermanNOSPAM@...>

My grandmother's daughters all swear that their mother's name was Eta
Milgrom.

However, on Ellis Island she is listed as Mariemlte Milgram. I am
certain she is one and the same person because she was coming to Atlanta,
Georgia to marry my grandfather and Atlanta is where it said she was coming
on the Ship Manifest. Does anybody have any knowledge about this strange
name change? Who should I trust, my aunts or Ellis Island.?

Thanks for your response.
Marilyn Feingold Atlanta, Georgia
My grandmother's first name as I knew it was Sheila. Her daughters (my mom
& aunt) told me that her real name was Sophie but that she changed it when
she came to America. On reviewing her US naturalization records, it clearly
shows that her real name was originally Getel, not Sophie.

Was this a surprise? Yes

Was it out of character for my grandmother to hid this information >from her
family? No, she did things like this all the time. She obviously didn't
like the name Getel and wanted to purge it >from her life. If it wasn't for
government records, she would have succeeded.

Now if only I could figure out the truth of when she was born.

Her original legal name might have been something different >from either of
those. It's quite possible that "Eta" is a nickname formed >from her formal
first name -- which would resemble what was written down on Ellis Island,
but not be exactly the same.

The immigration officers on Ellis Island often did things such as spelling
a Norwegian name as if it was Swedish.

My father was born in the US. His legal name was Samuel Abraham Goodman.
His birth certificate gave his name as Abraham Samuel Goodman. His mother
called him Schloime -- which, as I've been told here, would properly be
translated as "Solomon".

If "GDUD" stands for "Geduld," that is the German word
for "patience" or "forbearance," according to my dictionary.

This appears to be a contraction of the name Geduld, which if my memory
serves me correctly, translates into "pity".
