Kohn, Lustgarten and Schonhauzer #hungary

Wayne and Caroline McCullough <iccoffee@...>

Hi everyone!

I am very excited because a cousin of ours recently went to Budapest and
gathered some more information for me on my M=E4rle side of the family.

My great great Grandfather Vilmos M=E4rle was married (m.1877)to Jozefa
Lustgarten (b.1855, d.1912?)

Jozefa's father was: Mark Lustgarten and her father Mari Kohn.

Vilmos's father Simon M=E4rle was not french as originally postulated by
one family member. He was born in Nagytapolcs=E1ny in 1813. His father was
Farkas M=E4rle and his mother's last name was Schonhauzer (first name
unknown).

If you have related names, please email me privately at
iccoffee@... to see if you have any connections.

Kind regards,
Caroline McCullough

I thank many of you for your helpful responses to my last inquiry
regarding HONIG and WILHEIM rabbis in 19th century North Hungary.

One response suggested that a son-in-law (Shraga ROSENBERG) of R'
Ahron WILHEIM immigrated to the United States >from Bazin/Pezinok.
He was a rabbi in Cleveland Ohio and died in 1959. I have found no
references to R. ROSENBERG online. Does anyone have any information
about him or his family. Alternatively, where might I look (other
than Ellis Island, Cleveland newspapers, or the LDS Family History
Centers)?

R' ROSENBERG's father was reportedly R' Shlomo Katz. Can anyone
suggest why they had different surnames? Where was R' Shlomo Katz
from?

Private responses are welcome.

Family lists for Vilna after 1858 #general

Peter Hills <Pmhills@...>

The last full revision (census) for Vilna took place in 1858. I would
welcome guidance please on the timing and availability of the family lists
from 1858 to 1900 that replaced the revision for Vilna. Are there plans to
include them in the ALD, indeed have they survived? Thank you.

Levy: Caernarvon, Wales, Schocken, Poland #unitedkingdom

Lois Kaufman <lois@...>

Dear Members,

Perhaps you can help me with two queries.

I think that I may have found the (1896) UK naturalisation document of my
g-grandmother's half-brother, Solomon Levy. His age (56), his year of entry
into the UK (1850) and the name of his father (same as that of my
g-g-grandfather - Abraham Levy) are all positive indicators. In the
naturalisation document it states that he was born in Schocken, Germany. I
have looked up the Jewishgen shtetlseeker, but cannot be sure which Schocken
(or variant spellings) I should be looking for. I would presume that it
would be somewhere near Posen (current day Poznan in Poland) as this is
where Abraham Levy's second wife was born and where my g-grandmother's elder
(full)brother was born. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Another question I have refers to Solomon Levy's witnesses. They were all
from Caernarvon, Wales. Now this is strange to me as my Levy's lived in
Leeds and Manchester, and I had thought that I'd located my Solomon Levy in
Manchester in the 1871 and 1881 census. (Maybe that was another Solomon
Levy?) Indeed, according to the naturalisation document, he had been living
at 36 Elizabeth Street, Cheetham, Mancehster >from April 1890 to November
1895. Does anyone know if records of the Jewish community of Caernarvon
exist and how it might be possible to access them.

As usual, my research opens up more questions than it answers!

Regards,

Lois Kaufman

Hello, All!
Help me, please.
I am looking for village in Ukraine or Poland, which had name
SviatoPokrovskoye in 1920.
In this village died my grandfather, when he was tortured to emigrate
from the Ukraine to Poland.
Where it inheres and how is identified now?
I did not found this town in

Vital Records in Lithuania #general

Victoria Reed <victoriajreed@...>

I have been doing research for a friend who was born in Lasdai, Lithuania
and lived there until she was 16 years old. Her family then emigrated to
Israel.

She has just returned >from a month spent in her home town. Before she
went,I gave her the locations for the records of Lasdai. She went to the
archives, and I will paraphrase what she told me on the phone tonight "They
told me that if I was interested in birth records or death records, that
they would be impossible to find . . . that they were probably destroyed,
etc. etc."

When I see her on Wednesday I will ask her which of the archives she went
to. Has anyone else had a hard time with Lithuanian records? It seems
that she should have had every advantage - she speaks and reads the
language fluently - not only is it her native tongue, but she is a
professor of Russian at Stanford University.

Should she have just been more persistent? What's going on here?!

VICTOR/VICTOROVITCH #unitedkingdom

Adele Lester <alester@...>

My grandfather, ALEC GOLD (or Goldman), had a brother
who retained their surname VICTOR (Victorovich). His
first name may have been Isaac. Alec had various
professions in East End of London, but I remember him
as having a fruit stall in Watney Street market in 1950's.
Alec died in 1961 age approx. 85.
He was married twice, once to Annie Schiller (my
maternal grandmother) who died in 1913, leaving
4 young children. A few
years later Alec married Sarah and had two children
with her.
Alec's brother ? VICTOR had a daughter named Rae.
His wife may have been Betsy Victor.
That is all I know of this branch.
Looking for anyone with any information/knowledge of
this family.
