I am doing a requested search for a cousin of the daughters of
[?] KASS, an insurance agent, and Sofia LUBARSKAYA:
Tammy (b. ~1925) Mary (b. 1930) and Miriam (b.1918).
They had family in Kiev in 1935.
Before WW II they lived at XXXX S. Kinlark Ave. Chicago.
This search was requested by an organization that helps people find
relatives: jfcs.org.

There is a Michael KASS listed in the FTJP, but the poster volunteered
little information.

Thanks for any help

Searching re: Ukmerge shtetls #general

ourabey@...

I am still searching for shtetls in the vicinity of Ukmerge. My family
left the area in 1906. Their manifest states they are >from Vilkomer but
I cannot find the family on any list in the database. My uncle was 6
when he arrived in US but would not discuss his life until he was in his
90s just a year or so prior to his death. At that time he said his town
was called Pude or Prude but I have not foud any evidence of a town with
a nickname even similar. To make the research even more difficult, the
family took the name of COHEN. The manifest says their name is COHN. I
am rather sure they were told by relatives already in US to use that
name. The relative already here was Louis KAPLAN who lived in Glens
Falls New YOrk. According to family lore, he took his wife's surname
upon their marriage. The death certificate for Louis Kaplan gives Cohen
as the surname of his father. But there was no name Cohen in Lithuania
at the turn of the century. Clues and advice very welcome.

By the way, does the Lithuanian database provide the most recent census
information? What is available closest to 1900?

Thank you

I would like to post the following:

I am seeking the children of Sidney KAPLAN, known to have lived in or
around Washington, DC, in the late 1950s-1960s. Sidney, b. circa 1910-1918
in Syracuse, NY, was the son of Sadie BORKOV (or Borookov) and Samuel
Kaplan.
The brothers of Sidney were Harry Kaplan and Bennett Kaplan Carter; a
sister of Sidney was Irene Kaplan. The parents of Samuel Kaplan were Elcon
Kaplan and Sarah REVA; Sadie was possibly one of many children of Benjamin
Borookov and Sarah MATLIN of Schklov. Russia.

As previously noted on the discussion group we have started a project re
passenger lists. This is under the Centre for Jewish Genealogy and
Migration Studies , UCT and Leicester University.

Last week I had a meeting with Prof Newman and Dr Graham Smith ( Computer
dept) there and the initial databases and templates were discussed. We have
an expert on shipping records, Debbie Beavis, advising.

We will shortly begin copying manifests, and obviously it saves money if we
do not have to order a specific one >from the PRO.

We would appreciate a copy of the manifest and we can then have it entered
in the database. I am able to refund any costs you have in Israel.

I posted too quickly. I meant I was surprised to see the name Chasya
connected to Chana. I believe that Chasya is a separate name meaning
something totally different. In case of fact, I know a family with two
daughters, one named Chasya and one named Chana. My grandmother's name was
Chasya and this was the name used on her Ketuba. Chanke, Chanze, are valid
nicknames for Chana, but I believe that Chasya is a different name and not a
Kinui.

I was wondering if someone might be able to check for the Enumeration
District for the address
2760 Grand Concorse Ave in the Bronx for 1930. I am unable to get to a
library to order the microfilm, and I do have access to Ancestry.com and
some Bronx 1930 census images are available.

Does anyone live at or near that district and could check whether there is a

His grave is located in number 189 in Section D.
