Sephardic surnames? #general

Gregor Samsa <grsamsa@...>

Dear friends,

First of all excuse me because of my terrible english !

I didn't ask about the historical disaster that surely was the last years of
the fourteenth century for jewish people in Spain.

I was only asking about a problem for a lot of people in Spain: The mistery
of our roots.

I'm not jewish NOW, and that's why, above the knowledge my history studies
brought to me , it's a question of feelings.

Fellow researchers:

Among some resurrected notes, I just found reference the husband of one of
our Lodz- Freedman family: YOUNIS SCHLIFKOWITZ.

Does anyone have another spelling or variation of this given name?

LANDER in BAKU #general

Ida & Joseph Schwarcz <idayosef@...>

Dear genners,
I recently cleaned out my house in Pittsburgh to sell it (sold) and brought
home boxes of photos. One of them had belonged to my parents and I vaguely
remember my late father telling me that the man in the photo was a friend of
his family who hoped that my father would be able to get him a visa to come
to the US. Since my father was a poor pushcart peddler he was unable to help
him. The photo is not dated, probably >from some time in the thirties. It has
a rubber stamped name and address and the same in script. Both are in
cyrillic and a friend translated them into Yiddish for me. The inscription
reads " Ober-Cantor [Chief cantor] of the Baku Chor Synagogue" It is
signed, D. M. Lander.
If you think this very impressive looking man with a small vandyke beard is
in your family I will be happy to scan the photo and show it to you.

Steve Morse's one-step to EIDB form improved upon again #general

Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>

Steve Morse's one-step EIDB form has been improved (again)

A couple of days ago I announced that Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger)
one-step form can re-sort the text version of the manifest so that
adjacent lines are together (the Ellis Island site presents the lines
all scrambled). Well I just noticed that Steve now provides that same
feature with his white (all passenger) search form. Furthermore, the
display of the results >from his white form has been changed so that it
now looks just like the results >from his blue form, making it much
easier to work with. That means you can get >from those results to the
manifest in just "one step" -- no need to first fetch the passenger
record on the way to seeing the manifest.

Steve tells me that he can't take any of the credit for this. All the
credit goes to Yves Goulnik in Switzerland who has performed two major
miracles in the seven days that he has been working with Steve.

To see the new format, go to Steve's white search form at

http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellis.html

and start your search by clicking on the button that reads "search (new
format)". If you liked the old format better, Steve still has a button
to generate that as well.

Again, please if you have any questions or comments, please direct them
to Steve Morse. You can find his e-mail address on his websites.

Good hunting!

French research (Forbach) #general

Leah Aharoni

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding research in France.

My objective is to determine the birth town of a relative that was born in
Poland and moved to France sometime after WWII. All I have are the name,
birth and death dates and the name of the town where he lived (Forbach).

If by some lucky chance I can find information about his parent that would
be a bonus.

1. What kind of documentation issued in France would record a person's place
of birth and/or parents' names?

2. Is any of this documentation available via the Internet?

3. Is there an institution of obituaries in France? How would one go around
looking for a (Jewish) newspaper >from Forbach, France?

Finally just in case, I am including the information I have. The relative I
am researching is Leon NIDERMAN born 10/09/1904, died 23/12/1994, married to
Esther NAJIEBORN, lived in Forbach.

Thanks,

Leah Aharoni

Benjamin MORRIS and Evelyn HOROWITZ #general

David Harris <dharris1@...>

My cousin, Evelyn HOROWITZ married Benjamin MORRIS about 1950. Ben was an
optometrist in Chattanooga, TN and the family had one son and one daughter
(names unknown). In about 1960, they emigrated to Israel, but returned to
the U.S. sometime later. Evelyn HOROWITZ MORRIS died in suburban Atlanta,
GA in December 1997, sometime after the death of her husband.

I'm seeking information about their son and daughter, specifically given
names and/or addresses.
Please reply privately.

Benjamin RUBIN and Vera KUNIN #general

David Harris <dharris1@...>

I have a family connection to Benjamin RUBIN born ~1890 in Husi, Romania.
He arrived New York in 1908 and moved to Chicago around 1915 with his
father Alter and other members of the RUBIN family. In the1920 census,
Chicago has a listing for a Benjamin living with his wife Vera and daughter
Evelyn, born in 1919.

Using other records, it's possible that his wife's maiden name was Vera
KUNIN and she died in California in 1985. I've tried the FTJP and there is
no RUBIN-KUNIN listing. Does anyone have information regarding this
Benjamin RUBIN and or Vera KUNIN?
Please reply privately.
Thanks.
