INTRO - researching BELLERSTEIN
#germany
Eve Richardson <erchrdsn@...>
I having been doing genealogy for a number of years now, but know nothing
about German - Jewish genealogy. I have gr gr gr grandparents by the name of BELLERSTEIN (or Ballerstein) who left Germany in the early part of the 1800's and settled in Hartford Connecticut, USA. Moses' nephew, Raphael, joined them. I do have more detailed information, if someone is interested. Some of it is in German, which I have to get translated. Eve Richardson Toronto, Canada

Re: Addresses of German Archives etc (Wiesbaden)
#germany
Ernest and Doris Stiefel <erstiefel@...>
I recommed the following book, in German, which lists all archives in
Germany,Austria and Switzerland and the individuals who work there. ARCHIVE in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Oesterreich und der Schweiz Herausgegeben vom Verein Deutscher Archive Ardrey-Verlag, Muenster I have the 15th edition, 1995, which does not lists e-mail or fax addresses. I have ordered the 17th edition which will supposedly includes e-mail addresses. It will be available in November 2002. Since the book lists addresses and names I believe a knowledge of German is not necessary. Ernest R. Stiefel, Seattle, Washington erstiefel@msn.com MODERATOR NOTE: We receive requests for contact information for various archives in Germany very often. I will continue to post these requests but it would be best for GerSig members to use our website to obtain such information. In this case the route would be as follows: The GerSig Website "Resources" Page: <http://www.jewishgen.org/GerSIG/resources.htm> Contains is a link to "Archives in Germany" <http://www.uni-marburg.de/archivschule/fv61.html> At this page click on "Staatsarchive" At the page you will now see, scroll down to "Hessen" the German Land (state) in which Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and Mainz are located. Under Hessen you will see a list of "Staatsarchive in Hessen" including "Hauptstaatsarchiv Wiesbaden". A click on this will take you to that archive's home page: <http://www.hauptstaatsarchiv.hessen.de/> which contains the following information: Hessisches Hauptstaatsarchiv, Mosbacher Str. 55, 65187 Wiesbaden [Germany] Televerbindungen: Telefon: 0611/881-0 Telefax: 0611/881-145 E-Mail: Poststelle@hhstaw.hessen.de Internet: http://www.hauptstaatsarchiv.hessen.de John Paul Lowens Suburban NYC GerSig Moderator <GerSig@aol.com>

NYC Birth Certs
#general
Herbert Lazerow
In response to the comments on the early 20th century NYC
Birth Certs that ask Number of Previous Children and How Many Now Living (in all), do not place too much weight on the accuracy of the answers provided. The juxtaposition of the two questions seems to confuse people, and I have seen children appear and disappear in the same family's birth certs when there has been no deaths. Treat it as an arrow toward further inquiry, not as a death cert. Bert Herbert Lazerow San Diego CA 92110-2492 lazer@sandiego.edu,
