I having been doing genealogy for a number of years now, but know nothing
about German - Jewish genealogy.

I have gr gr gr grandparents by the name of BELLERSTEIN (or Ballerstein)
who left Germany in the early part of the 1800's and settled in Hartford
Connecticut, USA. Moses' nephew, Raphael, joined them.

I do have more detailed information, if someone is interested. Some of it
is in German, which I have to get translated.

addresses. I have ordered the 17th edition which will supposedly includes
e-mail addresses. It will be available in November 2002.

Since the book lists addresses and names I believe a knowledge of German
is not necessary.

I've tried to get information on family burials at Mt. Moriah over the past

In response to the comments on the early 20th century NYC
Birth Certs that ask Number of Previous Children and How Many
Now Living (in all), do not place too much weight on the accuracy
of the answers provided. The juxtaposition of the two questions
seems to confuse people, and I have seen children appear and
disappear in the same family's birth certs when there has been
no deaths. Treat it as an arrow toward further inquiry, not as a
death cert.

there which received exceptional attention >from the press in other
countries, much to the embarassment of the Tsarist regime-not that much was
done by the regime to curb the antisemitic passions that had flared. Chaim
Bialik wrote well known poem about the pogrom, which one can read on the
Internet as "In the City of Slaughter." It was learning of this particular
pogrom that impelled Theodore Herzl to try mightily to find an asylum for
persecuted Russian Jews.

Kishinev was annexed to Russia in 1812. It was the center of a rich
agricultural region, and its development was enhanced when a railroad was
built during the 1870's. Until WWII about 40% of the population was Jewish.

The town's present rabbi is Zalman Abelsky.
