ZORBAS and Jews of Greece/Crete
#general
Ronald S.Lauder Foundation <laudergen@...>
Dear Friends:
We are trying to assist a Polish citizen find out more about his late father whom he never knew, a man surnamed ZORBAS. The rumors are that his father was a Greek Jew who fled to Poland for political reasons in the late 1940s. We are trying to determine if he was, in fact, Jewish. Where was he from? Who was his family? We are aware of a place in Crete called Zorbas, but it is the surname that interests us. If anyone on this list: 1) is familiar with this surname; or 2) can direct us to a Greek Jewry specialist or institution; or 3) knows of good sources of information about the Greek Communist Party in the 1940s [we're serious!], Please let us know privately. Many thanks and best wishes in the coming year 5763! Sincerely, Yale J. Reisner & Anna Przybyszewska-Drozd The Ronald S. 1901 Census - search issues & yeshivas
#unitedkingdom
Barry Young <b_i_young@...>
I posted a query regarding searching the 1901 census database, received some
replies - thanks to those who helped. I was looking for my Chaikin family, could not find them. I have now found them by searching for siblings. They were recorded as Ikind! My paternal grandmother signed her marriage certificate as Chaikind, so maybe it's not so strange. The search data shows my maternal grandmother as born in Russia, the census page stated London. I was searching for London born. Incidentally, I have not found her birth at the FRC. A question.. My paternal grandfather Lewis YANOFSKY is not listed with his family, I cannot find him anywhere in the census. I wonder if he could have been in a yeshiva in London, he was around 20 at the time. Any ideas of yeshiva names so I can do an Institutional search? Barry Young Barnet, Herts

The author is Benjamin Meirtchak. (Details are below.) Within each volume, there are many separate lists, thereby making a thorough search for a surname across all of the volumes quite tedious. It would certainly be useful to have these lists available on the web. I count about 600 pages in these books, for a total of (likely) over ten-thousand names. I have a bit of a mystery and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions: In theThere is still another possibility, Eric. If you found them on the Hamburg lists twice in the same month and year, it could be that they missed the boat [excuse the pun], or changed their minds about coming. If you could locate the manifest itself, you might find their names crossed off. There might be many reasons for that: they might have taken sick; changed their minds; died, God forbid; been in an accident or any number of other reasons. On the other hand, I did find these Benjaminsohns on the Ellis Island site: Benjaminsohn,Samuel 19y 1912 Benjaminsohn,Selde 22y 1909 Benjaminsohn,Selma 22y 1909 If there is anyone else who has relatives >from Goldingen, I made a list of all the Ellis Island entries for Goldingen and would be glad to look them up for you. OBviously, both my typing and proofreading was in error.
Sam MOSES came to Montreal in 1883. That datum and his age from the 1901 Montreal census gave me his age at the timeof his arrival.
