We have several EIDB records in which the passengers were headed for
Maspeth, Long Island, NY. I see lots of references in the JG Archives to
cemeteries and burials in Maspeth, but just wondering if it had any
other significance at the turn of the 20th c.?
Yes, Maspeth had a significant Jewish population at the turn of the 20th
century. Maspeth's total population in 1898 was 4,300. Many immigrants
worked in the large factories along Newtown Creek (such as the Laurel Hill
Chemical Works, or the National Enameling and Stamping Company). Workers
lived in houses near Maspeth Avenue built in the 1850's. The village
of Maspeth became famous for its many Picnic Parks; on Sundays, the Grand
Street Horse Car Line brought city workers and their families out from
Brooklyn and Manhattan via the ferries to enjoy the fresh air.

Jewish families were associated with the many dairy farms in Maspeth.
Fechter & Sons Dairy (my husband's grandfather); Gimpel Brothers Dairy
(Harry and Louis Gimpel, >from the same town in Ukraine as the Fechters);
Silver Crest Dairy owned by the Schwartz family (who married into the
Fechter family); and Beyer's Dairy were just some of these enterprises.
Many of these Jewish dairy-owning families helped found the Maspeth Jewish
Center.

Maspeth began as an Indian village, became Quaker, then very heavily
German. Fairly industrial. I am sure that there are Jews living there but
it really has never been known as a Jewish stronghold in NYC. Perhaps the
person(s) they were headed to had businesses there.

Descendant of Queen Esther living in Odessa? #general

My guess: Someone in your family heard the Esther ancestor story and
assumed it was the Persian queen. And if she was >from Persia, she
wouldn't have been Ashkenazi and therefore was a Sfardiah (actually,
Persian Jews are not Sfardim).

Articles of interest in the Online Journal #rabbinic

Seflaum@...

Dear Fellow Rav-SIG Members:

Here are two articles in the Rav-SIG Online Journal that may be of
interest to you. The articles may be accessed >from the "What's New"
section of the home page: http://www.jewishgen.org/Rabbinic

1) "The Reliability of Genealogical Research in Modern Rabbinic
Literature," by Rabbi Meir Wunder.

This is an excellent introduction to rabbinic genealogy. Rabbi Wunder
provides insight into the history and development of modern rabbinic
genealogy and which sources may or may not be reliable. The article
was originally published in "Avotaynu: The International Review of
Jewish Genealogy" (Volume XI Number 4---Winter 1995) and is reprinted
with kind permission.

2) "Web Site Review: JewishEncyclopedia.com," reviewed by Lawrence D.
Weinberg.

This new web site features the unedited contents of the original
"Jewish Encyclopedia" (1901-1906) and is a boon to rabbinic genealogy
researchers since the encyclopedia placed heavy emphasis on rabbinic
biographies and pedigrees. Lawrence Weinberg provides an overview of
the site and tips on search and navigation. Many thanks for his time
and effort in authoring this excellent review.

Sincerely,

Dear Group,

can someone please advise me - i sent a polish archive letter to the group
for translation, and it seems apparant that i have been heavily over charged
for genological research they quoted me £165.00 initial search for my
FREEDMAN family followed by a further £215.00 totalling £380.00. By the
additional emails i have recieved >from you all it is quite apparent that
this is a high fee. I have had one suggestion suggesting that i log onto
Jewishgen and submit the form with my names on and it will be cheaper is
that the best option? or will someone who has a greater experience than me
approach the archives on my behalf?

Dear Hannah, and the rest of the group,
this was the letter i sent to the archives, I think the reason it is so much
money £378.00 is because FREEDMAN is such a common name, hence there were
185 pages of FREEDMAN families on the JRI Poland database, so it requires 35
hours of research time? for FREEDMAN families in the WARSAW, area.
