Yoav,
This might be hopelessly incorrect, but worth a try .
A few years ago I visited a shtetl (a very small shtettele) tucked away in
the Northwest of Lithuania, named PIKELIAI (in Lithuanian) but was known as
PIKKELE by its former Jewish inhabitants. The village is literally a
stone's-throw >from the river that forms the border between Lithuania and
Latvia.
If memory serves me correctly , Pikeliai is due North of the regional centre
of Mazeikiai. At the turn of the last century, most of the inhabitants of
Pikeliai were Jewish and a thriving smuggling operation existed between the
two regions of Lithuania and Latvia.
My father-in -law's family (Neiman/Neuman) came >from Pikkele/Pikeliai.
The similatity between the two names of Passelle and Pikelle, and the
geographic locality should be taken note of.

You are probably right about us all coming out of Africa. DNA preserves
evidences of relationships going tens of thousands of years back in time.
Going that far back, everyone is related.

One of the realities is that the Kohen line was scrupulously preserved and

As I recall, the researchers of the original work on Kohanim repeated their
studies on Levi'im and found three separate genetic strains predominating
among these, which is compatible with the theory of non-Levite recruitment

Sandomierz Archives, JRI-Poland Project #general

suzanne s. waxman <sswnola@...>

Dear Fellow Researchers,

At long last the initiative to index the Jewish records of the
Sandomierz Archives has been started. This will be under the auspices
of JRI-Poland/Polish State Archives project. These records have not
been filmed by the Mormons thus will enable researchers to expand their
research into a time period that has until now been difficult to
research. The years encompass the time when our great-grandparents,
grandparents, and parents were born and married.

The following towns are included in the archive:
Annopol
Bogoria
Janow Lubelski
Klimontow
Koprzywnica
Krzeszow
Kurozweki
Opatow
Osiek
Ozarow
Polaniec/Plontch
Sandomierz
Staszow
Tarlow
Zawichost

I'm Archive Coordinator in addition to being Town Leader for Ozarow and
Sandomierz. The following towns have Town Leaders. Please get in touch
with them if you would like to help.

Annopol-------Jim Feldman, feldmans@attbi.com
Klimontow---Yechezkel Anis, chatz@netvision.net.il
Opatow---------Lancy Spalter, lspalter@netvision.net.il

Polaniec-------Michael Gottlieb, gottlm@earthlink.net
Sandomierz---Suzanne S. Waxman, sswnola@earthlink.net
Staszow-------- Jean-Pierre Stroweis, stroweis@trendline.co.il

Town Leaders are still needed for the following towns: Bogoria, Janow
Lubelski, Koprzywnica, Krzeszow, Kurozweki, Osiek, Tarlow, and
Zawichost. If interested in helping please contact me at
sswnola@earthlink.net .

The indicies for Klimontow, Ozarow, Sandomierz, and Staszow have already
been done. We're working to make them available online. Contact the Town
Leaders to find out more about this.

Updates on the JRI-Poland/PSA Sandomierz project will be available at:

The mystery unfolds... #general

Marilyn Feingold <mrl@...>

My mystery search is slowly yielding results. I know now that Benjamin
Weissmann came to America in 1888. His son was born in Bucharest. He came
with his wife, Lena (Evelyn) and son, age 5, Samuel Henry. I'm assuming
that Benjamin might also have been born in Bucharest. The question for you
out there is this. Benjamin was 40 when he came to America. How can I
find out more about what was going on bucharest in 1888 that would have
made them want to leave. Is there anything on the web about Jews in
bucharest-any vital records on the internet? I know that Benjamin's wife
had two other children, but only one survived. Is there anyway I can get
more information about this. They lived at 133 Gorck Street in Manhatten
during the 1900 census. Is anyone familiar with this address? So many
questions... Thanks for your interest. marilyn feingold

Where are 19th century 'Krisllar' in Russia & 'Strovitsa' in #general

Malcolm Cartier <mcartier@...>

Malcolm Cartier mcartier@netvision.net.il (#71409)

Where are 19th century 'Krisllar' in Russia & 'Strovitsa' in
Austria-Hungary?

Both my two grandfathers' British naturalization papers record migration
from apparently geographically non-existent towns, I would like to
determine what the correct names are and where are they today. Help and
some guess work has produced possibilities, but nothing has been
established. I am looking for:-

'Krisllar' 19C Russia – Millman Family, I think he only spoke Yiddish not
Russian and >from memory Vilna Gubernia was mentioned, a close association
could be adjacent Kraslava/Kreslavka in Vitebsk Gubernia, Latvia or
Krasilovka, Ukraine.

'Strovitsa' 19C Austria-Hungary – Cardash Family (possibly from
Chardash/Kardash/Kardos) I thought could be Ostroweic, Poland but not in
19C Austria-Hungary, some family feel we should look around Lvov/Lemberg so
perhaps 90km NE is Shchurovichi/ Sterwitz/Stervitz/Shtruvits, Ukraine. The
name Cardash is Hungarian so could it be in the Czech Republic, Ostrava or
just south Ostravice (pronounced 'Otravits').

Any help or direction in sorting out what is probably a misspelled phonetic
transliteration of the half-swallowed Yiddish unintelligible to English
ears would be greatly appreciated.

Records of the Tsar's army? #general

Hello Genners!

I recently discovered that an ancestor was given a land grant by the
Tsar for his service. I would like to recover more information about
this. My family occupied the land until (probably) the 1880s, when they
lost everything. Can anyone tell me the best source to search (online
would be great) records of the Tsar's army or land grants?

Many thanks!
