Sorting the text manifest by line number
#lithuania
Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>
Looks like Steve Morse has done it again. I just visited his Ellis Island
Jewish-Passenger website and discovered that he has incorporated the ability to sort the text version of the manifest by line numbers. The Ellis Island folks used to sort it that way initially (that certainly makes the most sense) but many months ago they made a change and the passengers are now displayed in a random order. For the life of me, I can't understand why they did that. What Steve has done (the work was actually done by a computer genius in Switzerland -- Yves Goulnik) is to intercept the text manifest that the Ellis Island site sends back and re-sort it so that the passengers are in the right order. To see this in action, go to Steve's Jewish-passenger search form: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html and do a search. When you get the results you'll see a link that says "text manifest" and another that says "text manifest (sorted)". Clicking on the first link gives the text manifest that the Ellis Island site created and the second link gives Yves' rearrangement of the manifest. So far this only works if you access the text manifest starting from Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger) search form. But when I asked about that, Steve said that Yves is currently looking into extending that to work with the white (all passenger) search form as well. If you have any questions regarding this new feature, please send your inquiries directly to Steve Morse as I have no expertise or any information about it. Good luck! Diane Jacobs New York

Looking for details on th lineage of Abraham Cahan
#lithuania
Roy Ogus <ogus@...>
Does anyone have any details of the lineage of Abraham Cahan, the noted
founding editor of the New York Jewish Forward newspaper? I am particularly interested in finding out the names of his grandparents, as well as other family members >from that generation and earlier generations. I have consulted many of the available biographical references for Cahan, and have found full details of his parents' names, but have found nothing about his grandparents or other ancestors. Thanks for any help! Roy Ogus Palo Alto, California, USA

peddler in Vermont 1850's
#usa
Marion Hattenbach Bernstein
My great-grandfather, Wolf KOHLHAGEN, came to the United States in
the 1850's and worked as a clock and watch repairman and peddler in the vicinity of Rutland. According to my father, he lived with distant relatives named Mineberg -- I have never found that name anywhere! According to family stories, Wolf returned to Germany in the early 1860's because his brother had died and he felt an obligation to help the widow. He married and stayed in Germany. My questions are: 1. Where would one find the steamship records for someone leaving the U.S. and returning to Germany? 2. >from anecdotes, how common was this scenario? Did some German Jews return for one reason or another? 3. Assuming he missed both the 1850 and 1860 censuses, where else might I find a record of his brief stay in Vermont? ...The original manifest is missing >from this site, and I have found two different dates for the arrival of the ship. EIDB says that the Batavia arrived April 24, 1906. The Morton Allan directory says the ship arrived April 21, 1906.>> I responded to Haviva about this and she suggested I alert the group. This is a no-brainer. If you have the new issue of Avotaynu, you'll find my article about using the entire backfile of The New York Times, now available from ProQuest at many educational institutions and library systems (includingthe Library of Congress--on every reading room terminal!). Not only articles are scanned, but EVERYTHING: want ads, display ads, birth notices, death notices, marriage announcements, engagement announcements (some for weddings that never occurred), and, of course, SHIPPING ARRIVALS. I merely typed in Batavia and set the date delimiter for anything prior to April 30, 1906 (in case of a delay in posting to the paper). The issue of April 22, 1906, p. XX2, showed that the ship had arrived on the 21st. Better yet, I was able to email the graphic of that item to Haviva as a pdf file. This is just one of the many handy uses of this great new resource. Elias Savada Co-Chair, 2003 IAJGS Conference on Jewish Genealogy
