Cantors in South Africa - Thursday August, 08, 2002.

In reply to the above message there was a Cantor
Kraus at the Oxford Shul in Johannesburg in the 1960's
and 1970's.
Contact Oxford Synagogue, Killarney Johannesburg

Does anyone know how I could find out about a cantor who possibly
arrived in SA >from Lithuania after 1900 (maybe Cape Town)? His name
would have been Eliezer Kress (unless the spelling is off or he changed
his name entirely). Would there possibly be a list of synagogues for
that time that also includes the names of their rabbis and cantors?

Re: Suggestions #general

sallybru <sallybru@...>

I have a suggestion also-related to this one.

On Viewmate, there used to be a section for Yiddish/Hebrew translation, one
for Russian, one for Polish, etc.

At another time, the links specified which language.

Now it just says Translation. Those of us who can translate one thing or
another have to look at each picture to figure out what we can help with.
Could we go back to 'Yiddish translation' or 'Yiddish help' or something
similar, so I could ignore that link as I can't read it
and spend my time on something I can do?

Thank you,

Rabbi Philip Heilbrunn of St Kilda Synagogue in Melbourne, Australia, is

Re: GDUD in Argentina - CD Search #general

Carlos Glikson

David Priever asked how to locate Gabriel GDUD in Buenos Aires - his name
did not come up in on-line white pages.

The reason: He is listed as Gabriel FELD GDUD - and he does turn up when
looking for him in the white pages CD. A search for him in the paper phone
book under GDUD would also have been negative.

Just these lines to mention there is an extra step you can give - if the
on-line and paper white pages fail, try the white pages CD - it
automatically searches last names "containing xx" too.

I am mailing David the info privately.

Hope this helps,

Dear Fellow Jewishgenners,
About a month ago I posted a query for the surname GDUD, which comes from
Lithuania. I received several responses about the origin of the name
which I appreciated very much.

I just located, via a Google search, a gentleman named Gabriel GDUD,
affiliated in 1993 with the University of Argentina in Buenos Aires The
email address provided is obsolete and a search of phone directories in
Argentina gives me only one other GDUD, Juan.

Any ideas or suggestions in locating Gabriel GDUD will be very greatly
appreciated.

KGB Files May Reveal Genealogical Data For Belarus Families #belarus

David M. Fox <davefox73@...>

The August 9, 2002, Weekly Digest >from the Belarus Embassy in Washington DC
contained the following:

Vitebsk region KGB office has presented a personal file on Marc Chagall's
sister to the Museum of the painter. The personal file on Mariaska Chagall
was started by the Temporary Extraordinary Committee (the terms used for
criminal police after the October 1917 revolution in Russia) after she was
employed to work as a post censor in the military. The personal file of
Chagall's younger sister contains some data on the life of the Chagall's in
1920-1921 in Vitebsk.=A0

The files confirmed some well-known facts of the painter=B9s life and reveale=

some new ones. For instance, the file materials made it possible to
determine the exact dates of birth of the father of Marc Chagall and that
his father was married twice, to two sisters consequently (according to
Jewish tradition, after the wife dies the widower would marry her sister).
