Jews in the Military, Poland, WWII

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>
Through interlibrary loan, I have collected 6 volumes that list Jews
who served in the armed forces in Poland during World War II. The author is Benjamin Meirtchak. (Details are below.) Within each volume, there are many separate lists, thereby making a thorough search for a surname across all of the volumes quite tedious. It would certainly be useful to have these lists available on the web. I count about 600 pages in these books, for a total of (likely) over ten-thousand names. Dear Genners,
My father Benjamin FEUORBERG, later changed to FAERBERG came to the US Nov.l6,1910 aboard the SS Campanello, age 17, coming >from Skala, port of departure Rotterdam,So.Holland, Netherlands.Being an only child I assumed his mother Mathilde came with him. His father deceased. Did not find mother Matilde on manifest.Checked Stephen Morese no luck. She never worked therefore there is no Soc.Sec.record. I do have her death certificate stating she passed away in 1942 at the Brooklyn Home for The Aged,N.Y..She is buried in Mt.Hebron, Queens,N.Y. Death certificate does not show her maiden name, only that a nephew named Samuel Waxman was the informant, and he died in 1906, resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., zip code area 11223, Have no further information on nephew. I have a copy of the 1930 Census listing entire family, does not say where or when she came to US. I was given an old photograph of her with old newspaper used as backing, Philadelphia Bulletin dated Oct. 30,1918 containing just some advertising. This leads me to believe she may have entered at a port in Phila.possibly between 1910 and 1918. Possibility there may have been relatives there that she stayed with for a period of time[just a guess] I was ten years old when my father died and have little family information. One other piece of information regarding my father, due to illness he never worked after soc.sec. came out Any suggestions as to how to further my search would be greatly appreciated. Please reply privately. Thank you. Ida Faerberg Cherney N. Lauderdale, Florida

Sorting the text manifest by line number
#lithuania
Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>
Looks like Steve Morse has done it again. I just visited his Ellis Island
Jewish-Passenger website and discovered that he has incorporated the ability to sort the text version of the manifest by line numbers. The Ellis Island folks used to sort it that way initially (that certainly makes the most sense) but many months ago they made a change and the passengers are now displayed in a random order. For the life of me, I can't understand why they did that. What Steve has done (the work was actually done by a computer genius in Switzerland -- Yves Goulnik) is to intercept the text manifest that the Ellis Island site sends back and re-sort it so that the passengers are in the right order. To see this in action, go to Steve's Jewish-passenger search form: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html and do a search. When you get the results you'll see a link that says "text manifest" and another that says "text manifest (sorted)". Clicking on the first link gives the text manifest that the Ellis Island site created and the second link gives Yves' rearrangement of the manifest. So far this only works if you access the text manifest starting from Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger) search form. But when I asked about that, Steve said that Yves is currently looking into extending that to work with the white (all passenger) search form as well. If you have any questions regarding this new feature, please send your inquiries directly to Steve Morse as I have no expertise or any information about it. Good luck! Diane Jacobs New York
