BOOK CITE - In Search of your German Roots by Angus Baxter
#germany
Stephen A. Cohen
Dear fellow Gersig members,
I've been increasing the tempo of my German research in comparison to other areas and looking for more ideas on research in the Western Germany. Although the archive our of own SIG digest and the info files of Jewishgen are excellent, I was seeking a good book on German genealogy sources. Two weeks ago I obtained a copy of the 4th edition of In Search of your German Roots by Angus Baxter published by Genealogy Publishing Co., Inc. The book has a section specifically for researchers of Jewish genealogy and handles the basics through advanced activities in Germany proper and has very fine insights into research into the various areas of the world where German settled or migrated. It lists many of the archives in Germany and the sources to contact. The book is easy reading and very informative. Mr. Baxter makes a large number of very practical suggestions to the reader. I would recommend this book highly to our members. Best regards, Stephen A. Cohen East Meadow NY (Long Island) - USA MODERATOR NOTE: I searched the GerSig archives and did not find a prior citation of this reference book. Our archives and our website DO contain references to many other basic resource books on German Jewish Genealogy. When posting information about a book, please include the following: Title Author Publisher Year of Publication (usually the year of copyright or latest edition) Number of pages Some description (quantity / quality of illustrations, index, tables, etc.) AND the ISBN number which will make it easier for members to obtain a book through libraries. Thanks. Sorting the text manifest by line number
#general
Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>
Looks like Steve Morse has done it again. I just visited his Ellis Island
Jewish-Passenger website and discovered that he has incorporated the ability to sort the text version of the manifest by line numbers. The Ellis Island folks used to sort it that way initially (that certainly makes the most sense) but many months ago they made a change and the passengers are now displayed in a random order. For the life of me, I can't understand why they did that. What Steve has done (the work was actually done by a computer genius in Switzerland -- Yves Goulnik) is to intercept the text manifest that the Ellis Island site sends back and re-sort it so that the passengers are in the right order. To see this in action, go to Steve's Jewish-passenger search form: http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html and do a search. When you get the results you'll see a link that says "text manifest" and another that says "text manifest (sorted)". Clicking on the first link gives the text manifest that the Ellis Island site created and the second link gives Yves' rearrangement of the manifest. So far this only works if you access the text manifest starting from Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger) search form. But when I asked about that, Steve said that Yves is currently looking into extending that to work with the white (all passenger) search form as well. If you have any questions regarding this new feature, please send your inquiries directly to Steve Morse as I have no expertise or any information about it. Good luck! Diane Jacobs New York

Mark Halpern <Willie46@...>
At a regular Board of Directors Meeting of the Jewish Genealogical
Society of Greater Philadelphia (JGSGP), the Board resolved to make a contribution to JewishGen in an amount equal to approximately $1 per member. The Board is proud to support JewishGen. We think that JewishGen is a necessary resource for all IAJGS member Societies and all of our members. We do not have a Society meeting or publish our quarterly Journal without reference to one or more of the resources available through JewishGen. The Board of the JGSGP challenges all IAJGS member societies and all members of those Societies to support JewishGen now and always. Mark Halpern Vice President, JGSGP On behalf of the Board

Jewish Encyclopedia is On Line
#belarus
David M. Fox <davefox73@...>
This website <http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/index.jsp> contains the
complete contents of the 12-volume Jewish Encyclopedia, which was originally published between 1901-1906. The Jewish Encyclopedia, which recently became part of the public domain, contains over 15,000 articles and illustrations. This online version contains the unedited contents of the original encyclopedia. Since the original work was completed almost 100 years ago, it does not cover a significant portion of modern Jewish History (e.g., the creation of Israel, the Holocaust, etc.). There is an on line search feature, but different transliteration standards 100 years ago may require some trial and error searching for names. If anyone finds anything about their families in the Encyclopedia, please share your good fortune by posting a message to the SIG discussion group. Announcement: Nancy Holden - SIG Research Coordinator
#belarus
David M. Fox <davefox73@...>
I am very pleased to announce that Nancy Collier Holden, who has Belarus
roots, has accepted the very important position of the Belarus SIG Research Coordinator. A former Special Education teacher, Nancy has an advanced degree in Supervision and Administration, has done graduate work in Clinical Psychology and Human Development, and has had extensive extensive administrative experience. Since her retirement, Nancy has lectured on Jewish genealogy and served as a volunteer at the National Archives Regional Branch in Laguna Niguel, California. She is also a past president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Orange County and a past editor of the Society's newsletter. In addition to all the above, Nancy is the current Editor of the Svensionys Yizkor Book and Editor of RootsKey, the newsletter of JGSLA. Nancy is also the webmaster of five ShtetLink pages, including Svir, Svisloch, and the Ukraine agricultural colonies which were populated by people >from Belarus. Nancy grew up in New York City and has lived in California since 1952. She has been working on her family history for 19 years and traveled for many years in the United States collecting stories, visiting cemeteries and viewing photographs as a way of filling in her family lines. Nancy has traced her father's line back to the 1400=B9s and her mother's line to 1700, working through the Grodno Archives, The Lithuanian Archives and the Latvian Archives with wonderful results. In the course of this search, Nancy had to learn to read Hebrew, Rashi script, and Russian well enough to be able to decipher names and places and rudimentary biographical information. Among her many duties, Nancy will be managing the SIG's research efforts, providing guidance to project leaders, developing and maintaining a list of SIG volunteers, and being the liaison to the JewishGen Research Vice President. The members of this SIG are most fortunate to have someone of Nancy's caliber heading up the SIG research efforts. I know Nancy will do an outstanding job and hope that you will show your appreciation by volunteering your time and talents to the SIG. You can contact Nancy at <nholden@interserv.com>. Please don't wait to be asked, volunteer to help the SIG today. If you can't spare the time, please make a financial donation to the Belarus SIG and JewishGen by going to: http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/belarus.html today. Please welcome Nancy to the Belarus SIG leadership team and start the New Year off by making a commitment to volunteer your time to the SIG and make a financial donation to support adding more material to the SIG website.
