Vilna Rabbi in mid-18th Century #rabbinic

LJA022864@...

I am trying to find information on my great great great grandfather
who was supposedly a somewhat famous rabbi in Vilna in the 1800s.
My great great grandmother Fannie RAPHAELSON was raised by the rabbi
and his wife (Cune??). Fannie was born in 1854 in Russia (Vilna?)
and moved to New York City. She was married to a Velval or William?
RAPHAELSON who died before 1920. They had 5 children - Lena
RAPHAELSON BYKOWSKY (1877 born in Russia/Vilna and died in 1963)of
NYC, Dr. Samuel J. RAPHAELSON of NYC, Jeannette (Jenny) RAPHAELSON
of NYC, Mollie RAPHAELSON of NYC and Ralph RAPHAELSON (born in 1875
in Russia/Vilna).

When Fannie's grandfather died she went back to Vilna for the
funeral, sold his house and brought back to the US some of his
things. Any information anyone may have would be very useful.
Thank you!

Aderet's Son Refael-Levi #rabbinic

M. Ronn

A gut moyed!

I am seeking information about Refael-Levi RABINOVITZ, the son of
the Aderet (Rabbi Eliyahu David RABINOVITZ-TEUMIM). The Aderet was
the father-in-law of Rabbi Kook; hence, Perets RABINOVITZ was Rabbi
Kook's brother-in-law. I looked in "Seder Eliyahu," which is the
autobiography of the Aderet, but to no avail.

I am looking for the following (with sources as possible):

1) Confirmation (if possible) that Refael-Levi and his mother were
in Kfar-Saba during World War I
2) The dates and places of death of Refael-Levi and his mother.

Yours truly,

Michoel Ronn

Litvak customs for Ketubas #lithuania

stephen lubell

My wife has a number of handwritten Ketubas >from her family in Lithuania -
mostly late 19th or early 20th century. They are usually simply written in
Ashkenazic cursive script and the lines are curved >from right to left so as
to form a kind of semi oval design overall.

Does anyone know the origin of this practice? I can send a JPEG file of one
of the Ketubas if someone is interested in seeing the original.

Thanks in advance!

Dear Susan,
Charles Press's book, The Light of Israel, the history of the Paarl
Jewish Congregation. lists at least seven different Nankins and one or two
family photos. Paarl is about 20 miles >from Durbanville. Herman Nankin was
one of the founders of the congregation in 1895. On SA sig website you will
find a list of the Shtetls of origin of the Paarl community.
I am an ex-Paarlite.

One of the most helpful resources that has not been mentioned is the SA
National Archives. When doing a search on specific names you are interested
in, you would find:

NAKIN, 12 entries
NANKIN, 175 entries
RATHOUSE, 28 entries
RIGHTHOUSE, 55 entries
ROTHAUS, 8 entries

As an example of how these entries could provide vital information about
relationships with several of the family names, variant spellings used, and
even an opportunity to determine the original spelling of one of the family
names, the following entries are provided:

Entry for the estate in 1970 of Klass Maurice Nakin known as Morris Nankin,
born Pietermaritzburg, living with Jeanette Werner (this might not be a
Jewish entry, but shows how someone can assume a name that might be
considered Jewish).

Entry for the naturalization in 1911 of Louis Nankin and children.

Entry for change of name in 1951 >from Nankin to Nathanson (no first names
given, so it is difficult to determine which Nankin this refers to).

Entry for the death in 1904 of a Samuel Rothaus alias Rathouse, whose wife
Clara survived him.

Entry for restitution of conjugal rights in 1963 for Sarah Rebecca Nankin
Righthouse Politzky (born Nankin, formerly Righthouse) >from Morris Politzky
(there is no record for the Righthouse she married).

Entry for the death in 1939 of a Rachel Schiffman Righthouse known as
Rathouse whose husband Abraham Righthouse predeceased her.

In addition, a note for Mike Getz, there were several court cases involving
the Nankin family and Abraham Getz and Ariel Lionel Getz. Are you related?

Dear Stan,
Thank you for the messages. I have not heard of Judith or Solly Nankin, but
have the feeling Solly might be one of my Lippa Nankin's brothers'
descendants. I would like to write to Judith to see how they figure into the
family. Or, you are welcome to pass my email address on to her if you feel
uncomfortable handing out her address.

I did take the advice of another poster and went through NASA and found the
following on Sarah Righthouse:
Illiquid Cases. Restitution of Conjugal Rights. Morris Politsky versus
Sarah Rebecca Politsky (formerly RIGHTHOUSE, born NANKIN). Dated 1963.
In a news article in Boston dated 1961, Sarah Righthouse returned to see her
sisters after 47years. Is this regarding a divorce >from Morris Politsky? In
any event, I believe this to be our Jennie Nankin's sister Sarah.

I so appreciate your help. Will now go back to the South Africa site and do
some more thorough searching.

Thank you again,
