Seeking family information in Chernigov
#ukraine
RMSR2@...
Hello Everyone: I am new to this listserve. I am seeking information on my
grandparents families in Chernigov, Ukraine. My grandfather Samuel ROVICKOVICH/RAVICKOVICH [on the ship's manifest it looks like Bgrovikowitsh???] was born 14 April 1883 in the City of Chernigov - his father was Hyman/Chaim (Rovickovich?) and his mother was Fay MILIS/MOLIS. He married a first cousin Esther AZBELL/ASBELL daughter of Jacob AZBELL/ASBELL and Bella MILIS/MOLIS in 1904. They had a son Lester born 14 January 1905 in Chernigov. Samuel ROVICKOVICH (uses ROVICK in U.S.) left Liverpool England in 1906 on the Ivernia and sailed to Boston, Mass (then on to Chicago, IL in October, 1906). Esther and Lester came to the U.S. in 1907 (according to the 1920 Census Record) and she gave birth to her second child in 1908 in Chicago, IL. He applied for Social Security Application in 1942 wherein he lists his parents names and his date of birth. He lists Chernigov under "City" and Russia as "Country". Is there enough known information to find records on this family in Chernigov? I have not been able to locate Esther and Lester's ship information - I do not know what last name she would have used! She is said to be >from a family that were bakers. I would appreciate any directions or assistance >from the list membership. If I am inappropriate in this e-mail, please forgive my ignorance. Sincerest thanks. Rose Mary S. RUDY

Hello group.
I'm searching for someone but I'm afraid I have very little information to go on. I am seeking the family and descendants of Ola (aka Laja) who was the wife of my grandfather's brother Adolf (Adzio) GLIKSMAN. Sorry but I don't know Ola / Laja's maiden name. According to the Lodz Ghetto List she was born 13 June 1886. She and Adolf lived in Lodz in the 1930s. Ola (Laja) ran a hat shop in Lodz. Adzio was an engineer. They had no children. As far as I know they both perished in the Lodz Ghetto. Ola (Laja) had a nephew (>from her side of the family) who somehow contacted my grandfather Leon during the war. I am hoping that the nephew or his family are still alive somewhere and that they or someone they know will see this email. The only other information I have that might help identify Ola (Laja) is that Adzio had 5 siblings, all of whom perished - Mania MIRTENBAUM, Henia EJDELSZTEJN, Gustawa BROKMAN, Leon GLIKSMAN and Stanislaw GLISKMAN. With thanks to all Alan Glixman Sydney, Australia Researching: BROKMAN in Poland; EJDELSZTEJN in Poland; GLIKSMAN in Poland (Lodz, Pabianice & Warsaw); CHAZAN in Poland; HEYMANN (GEJMAN) in Poland (Praszka) & Germany (Regensburg); HONIGSTOCK in Poland (Krosno); KAFTAL in Poland (Lodz); LAPP in Poland; LICHTENSTEIN in Poland & Germany; MIRTENBAUM in Poland & Canada; MONTAG in Poland; ZYLBERSZTEJN in Poland;

INTRO: Researching TIEKE et al
#germany
Jimmy Stephens <callydude@...>
Hello GerSig,
I just joined the group. I have been doing genealogy research for 4 months. I am a novice in doing German Jewish Genealogy. I live in California. I consider myself advanced in using a computer. My experience in using the Internet is intermediate. I have identified the names and birth and death dates of my ancestors. My primary research goals now are to find out my relationship to the family TIEKE. Names and towns that I am researching are:TIEKE, and BRANDS. from Brandenburg, Germany, and maybe Amsterdam? One man has told me thatTIEKE may be Pommeranian? I also found 2 TIEK without E, in Poland who were murdered in the Holocaust. I can trace TIEKES >from Iowa to Ohio, to New York, to Germany, to Denmark, and several in Scotland (late 1600's?). As far as BRANDS they are in Germany, Preussen, and Switzerland. Some of the BRANDS were lited as COHEN-BRANDS. The Mormon family history center does not carry these above mentioned microfiche in thier local center I would have to order them through Salt Lake and too many to order at $4.00 each. Can any other place carry these microfiche? Do Jewish places hold these records? Would Berlin help? Any ideas welcomed. The info I have is on the following >from ssi death index, and familysearch.com ... Father--Cristoph Tieke Mother--Dorothea Eliesabeth Brands Son--Carl Philip Tieke Grandson--Christian Friderich Tieke When I used the Mormons LDS sites I was directed in the printouts to the following... Thanks. Jimmy Stephens City?? Re: Papierhaendler [defined]
#germany
Johannes Heidecker <Johannes_Heidecker@...>
Dear Jerry Zeisler,
i would guess it is "Papierh=E4ndler" (with =E4 / ae) which means someone who does commerce with paper. That could be (>from a historic perspective) * someone who buys paper >from a factory and sells it, eg. to packaging industry, newspapers, stores, print shops, * someone who buys used paper and sells it to paper factories I would rather not say that this is someone who has a store where he sells retail, because I do not think that someone would only sell paper. Such a person would have a "Schreibwarengeschaeft" and also selling pens, enveloppes, .. and would not necessarily be called "Haendler", which means dealer. I mention the used paper buyer, as poor people - and very often Jews - used to be "Altpapierhaendler", going >from house to house, buying used paper (old newspapers and other) and then sell it to paper factories who use this to make new paper. Johannes Heidecker Bondoufle (France) http://www.chez.com/johannes ggson of Ludwig Tennenbaum, director of Neusiedler Papierfabrik (Austria-Hungary)

Welcome Bobruiskers!
#belarus
Schelly Dardashti <dardasht@...>
I second and third Dave Fox's remarks.
Over the years, I have noticed that many Mogilev families had branches in Bobruisk and in Gomel. I generally advise people looking in one of these places to also look in the other two as well. In our own case, we know there were at least two Talalay branches (from the Mogilev city area and surrounding villages) in Bobruisk. One small group went to America (my ggf's brother and his family to Newark NJ), and the other (a seemingly much older branch just recently discovered) married into the Katzenelson family (among others) who moved to St. Petersburg and Moscow, as well as more recent immigrants to Melbourne Australia and Brooklyn, NY etc). Genealogy is all about sharing information, particularly in those geographical areas where there was considerable movement among a few closely-situated population centers. I, for one, look forward to the cooperation and involvement of the Bobruisk Interest Group in the Belarus SIG. Best wishes, Schelly Talalay Dardashti Tel Aviv dardasht@barak-online.net
