Refugee organisation in Vienna 1939
#general
Robert Fraser <rgfraser@...>
When my late Mother left Vienna in August 1939 for the United Kingdom,
a Jewish refugee organisation was still operating there. I'm curious to find out which one it was. No details appear in any of her personal documents or memoirs. Could it have been the "Joint", mentioned recently on JGEN or perhaps was it a local organisation? Any suggestions appreciated Gut Yomtov Robert W Fraser Perth, Western Australia rgfraser@iinet.net.au

Re: Machzike Hadath Anshei Zborow - how do I locate temple records?
#general
Judith27
The 1939 WPA listing would appear to be for a shul that was by then
defunct and no longer in existence. In the section for "Former Synagogue Locations" in Oscar Israelowitz's *Synagogues of New York City ~ History of a Jewish Community* there is a listing on page 80 for a Machzikel Hadath Anshei Zborow that once used to be at 89 Ridge Street, Manhattan, New York, but no time frame is given. You might check the listing in the microfilm of the 1939 WPA Project which is at the NYC Municipal Archives, as some of the defunct card entries occasionally gave some additional information, such as location, and year of organization, and if the shul possibly merged with another synagogue. However, many of the defunct shul cards have no further data. You might also check for possible listings in the various Manhattan City Directories to see if there was any listing for this shul when it was in existence or for possible incorporation papers in Manhattan. Landsmanshaft organization Query
#general
jselig3460@...
Genners:
I have often pondered the question of whether or not all members of a landsmanshaft come >from the shtetl,or vicinity, upon which the organization is based. How do we then account for so many of the married couples being members? I suspect that, often, membership is a practical and social convenience. Nevertheless, the intense emotional attachment to a former world must be present. I can only put it to our membership, to recall the conversations from their childhood when keeping an ear open to the conversation of theirelders to bring enlightenment to this subject. My research in this area provides only conjecture, not hard data. Jerome Seligsohn NYC SELIGSOHN and ELKIN of Mogilev

Searching for Marika VERO

Vivian Kahn <vkahn@...>
I'm trying to locate Marika (Maria) VERO, my second cousin. She was
born in Debrecen, Hungary, in 1942 and is the daughter of Piroska MARKUS VERO, my father's first cousin, and Zoltan VERO. Piroska was born in 1913 in Sepsiszentgyorgy, Hungary (now Sfate Gheorghiu, Rom.). Zoltan was born in Nyirbator, Hungary in 1905 and was reported missing on the Russian front in January 1943. In December 1949, Marika was living with her mother, stepfather Bandi (Andras?) and a 17-year old step-brother in Budapest. The family may have emigrated to Argentina or Chile in 1956-57. Any info or suggestions on how to trace this family will be appreciated. Vivian Kahn, Oakland, CA

Dear Colleagues,
For a feature on the value of Jewish genealogical conferences, especially those outside of major research centers, Avotaynu would like to hear from those who had personal research successes as a result of the recent Toronto conference. It might be a lecture that had particular relevance, a database with information about an ancestor[s], a tip picked up while networking, or something else. Please send your contributions to me at this e-mail address. Thank you. Sallyann Amdur Sack, Ph.D. Editor, Avotaynu, the International Review of Jewish Genealogy
