Your town is probably Nagy-Csalomia, itself a district (jaras) in Hont
megye, now Vel'ká Calomija. In 1877 there were 29 Jews there who went to a shul at Ipolyság. The Nitra archives currently has the town's Jewish births1850-1949, marriages 1850-1947, and deaths. 1850-1947. Jordan Auslander

Several Jewishgenners are researching the name Morowitz or its variants. I don't recall "Kirsner" (which could be spelled also as Kirschner), but Mr. Morrow should check Jewishgen's Family Finder and its Discussion Group Archives for those surnames. As for the town Dubno, doing a search using the "seach this website" box at Jewishgen's main page (http://www.jewishgen.org) will turn up information about the town, especially see the description and history at the Jewishgen affiliated International Cemetery Project. Also some information is available also on the Internet. The "google" search engine (http://www.google.com) will find it. There is a Yizkor book for Dubno: a memorial to the Jewish community of Dubno-Volyn, which was published by the Dubno Organization in Israel in 1956. Usually Yizkor books do contain lists of names. But I do not think this particular Yizkor book has been translated and put online. Searching for "Dubno" at http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com will produce an article about the town written by Herman Rosenthal, S. Janowsky and M Seligsohn. It gives the names of varous rabbis, one of whom was the subject of a book. Also this article offers a very short bibliography There is a brief article about Dubno in the "Universal Jewish Encyclopedia" which was published in 1941 (I own volumes 1-7 of this Encyclopedia) and I am almost sure that the Encyclopedia Judaica will also have an article but I do not have any volumes >from this set. Given that Madrid is the city of Mr. M orrow's residence it may not be very easy for him to find a set of the Encyclopedia Judaica. So Mr. Morrow may have to content himself with what the online "jewishencyclopedia.com" article says. My 1962 Columbia-Lippincott Gazetteer says that Dubno is situated on the Ikva Rivers 25 miles West south west of Rovno. In 1931 its population was 12,696. It was an agricultural center, and had tanneries, sawmills, and food processing, tile and brick factories. It was founded in the 11th century, and became a commercial center during the eighteenth century. Toward the end of the eighteenth century it was ceded by Poland to Russia. It was the site of a number of battles during the Polish-Russian War in 1919-1920, reverted to Poland in 1921. In 1945 it was ceded to the USSR. Before World War II it had a large Jewish population. Miriam Weiner's book "Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova" indicates that there are still a number of Dubno records available in archives in Rovno, Zhitomir, Warsaw and Kiev. A researcher would have to be hired to examine those records for his ancestors. Stephen Morse websites shut down

Dear Group,
Avotaynu's newsletter, "Nu, What's Nu?", just sent out a message that the The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. has shut down Stephen Morse's EIDB websites. (Text below) With tomorrow's mail, I will be sending a real, paper letter to the SLEIF, complaining about their stupidity (tactfully, of course). I'll be suggesting they should be commending him instead of censuring him. Perhaps if enough of us let them know how important and valuable these websites were to us, they'll reconsider. Their address, >from their website, is: The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. Attention: History Center 292 Madison Ave New York, NY 10017 Regards, Hilary Henkin Atlanta, Georgia USA Reprinted with permission >from "Nu? What's New?" the Internet e-zine published by Avotaynu. ========== Steve Morse "One-Step" Site Forced to Shut Down Under the threat of legal action >from The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SLEIF), Stephen Morse has shut down all of his sites that link to the Ellis Island Database. The Foundation accused Morse of creating a site that performs what has come to be known as "deep linking." Deep linking is the act of linking to a page at a web site other than the Home Page. Deep linking may, indeed, be illegal. In a court case brought in a country of the European Union, it was deemed illegal and, therefore, cannot be performed in any country of the EU. In the United States, a Georgia state law that banned deep linking was ruled unconstitutional only because it overstepped the boundaries of Georgia law which has to be limited to events which occur within the state. A number of years ago, Ticketmaster, a U.S. company that sells tickets to events, sued Microsoft, who was providing deep links to the Ticketmaster site. The case was settled out of court with Microsoft agreeing not to continue the practice. Morse and SLEIF actually came close to an agreement which would allow portions of his site to remain available until they provided comparable service, but the contract they presented him to sign demanded that he admit that what he did was "in violation of the Foundation's legal rights and in breach of the Foundation's terms and conditions...." The contract then stated SLEIF would forgive him for past sins. Morse refused to agree to such terms and decided instead to close his site. Deep linking is a common practice. Every search engine performs the function. Every edition of "Nu? What's New?" includes such links. Web site owners normally do not object to the practice because it has a positive benefit to the site owner. However, this does not mean they cannot reserve the right to request that such a practice be selectively banned. Additional information about this controversy can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/00/04/cyber/cyberlaw/07law.html, which, of course, is a deep link into The New York Times web site.
