Cecil KRAVITZ
#general
David Kravitz
I enquired about Cecil KRAVITZ a few weeks back, searching for details of
a shul he might have belonged to, along with his parents Solomon and Esther. My thanks to those who responded but I still have not had any success. I have now obtained a copy of his birth certificate and perhaps the details might yield more success in locating their shul? Cecil was born on April 14th 1916 and the address is shown as 166 Cornwall Road, London SE. Cornwall Road is a few yards >from Waterloo Station, south of the Thames, although his birth was registered at Kensington Central, north of the Thames. Both parents were tailors and had previousl lived in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Her maiden name was SIRAGHER. After this date there is no trace of any of them in births, marriages, death, deed poll name changes or Ellis Island records. I also understand that there was a tailors called Kravitz in Bond Street in the west end of London until about 1950. Does anybody out there have any ideas? May you all fast well and enjoy a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. I will be in Israel for Succot. David Kravitz Bournemouth England

Hamburg Immigration Lists

Haviva Langenauer <havival@...>
Dear Genners,
I have found records for relatives who sailed >from Hamburg to NY on the EIDB. There was a mother listed, Ettel Rosenmann, and five children, who might have included nieces and nephews. The ship was the Weser and arrived in 1894. When I go to the Hamburg immigration lists, only the name of the mother is listed. Any ideas of why the children were left out? I have not yet ordered the records >from Hamburg. Was the entire family listed with the name of the person in charge? Thanks for your help. Haviva Dolgin Langenauer So. Florida

Yizkor Book Project, August 2002
#latinamerica
Joyce Field
Part of this update was included in a New Year's message to the
Yizkor Book Project Digest. As so many readers of JewishGen's mail lists enjoy hearing of the new material on the Yizkor Book site, we are posting this update even though it is later in the month than we traditionally send these updates. August 2002 update for Yizkor Book Project As many of you have undoubtedly heard, the Yizkor Book Project was honored in Toronto to receive an award by IAJGS, the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. The press release stated: "The IAJGS Outstanding Contribution Award, which is to be presented to a person, persons or organization in recognition of a contribution via the Internet, print, or electronic product. This year's award was made to JewishGen for its Yizkor Book Project. Susan King, President of JewishGen, and Joyce Field, Yizkor Book Project Manager, accepted the award on behalf of JewishGen." This award was made possible by all of you who have submitted translations, who have worked hard as project coordinators to encourage others to submit translations and to raise money for professional translators, and by all of you who shared the dream five years ago of what this project could offer to Jewish genealogists. Also, without the volunteers who manage the Yizkor Book Library file, the Yizkor Book Database, the Yizkor Book list of translators, the Yizkor Book Digest, and the Necrology Index, this Project could not operate as smoothly and efficiently as it does. And without the daily work of our Permissions Coordinator, who communicates so well with the Israeli landsmanschaftn, and the QA Coordinator (the same person!), and our excellent team of htmlers, we would never be able to get material online as rapidly as we do. Our heartfelt thanks to all of you! August 2002 production, despite our concentration on the Toronto meeting, was excellent. We added four new books and 16 updates. New Books: -Czestochowa, Poland -Krakow, Poland -Szekesfehervar, Hungary -Wloclawek, Poland Updated Books: -Bedzin, Poland -Brzeziny, Poland -Buchach, Ukraine -Dubossary, Moldova -Khorostkov, Ukraine -Koden, Poland -Lida,Belarus -Lite (Lithuania) -Novogrudok, Belarus -Olyka, Poland -Piesk, Belarus -Slutsk, Belarus -Stawiski, Poland -Thessalonika, Greece -Zaglembia, Poland -Zgierz, Poland Joyce Field Yizkor Book Project Manager jfield@jewishgen.org

Barney for Peretz
#general
IsraelP <zach4v6@...>
We have two young men - probably first cousins - born in East Galicia and
living in New York in the early 1900's, both named Peretz and both called Barney. In one case, Barney was his adopted name and in the other his adopted name was Philip, but he was nicknamed Barney. They did not have the same surname. It is not clear if they moved in the same circles. I know perfectly well that there is not necessarily a connection between original names and adopted names, but this duplicate pairing is so unusual I can't help considering what may have been behind it. Aside >from the similarity between the letter "y" and the final tasdi, does anyone have a suggestion? Gemar hatima tova and hag sameah. Israel Pickholtz

Dear Geners:
I want to thank all of you who graciously replied to my query about help in Yiddish translation of my postcards, and the Yiddish word for Austria. When my great-grandfather wrote "Brody Bangasse" as a return address, I thought Bangasse meant Austria. As I learned >from fellow Genners, Bangasse does *not* mean Austria. This, then, is the word that I am not sure of its meaning. I searched in Google, 'Bangasse', and it is a place in Africa. Can anyone out there guess what my ggrandfather meant, when he wrote this? I know he lived in Brody, Austria (now Ukraine), and I'm just baffled about this word. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Katie Sobol katie2727@attbi.com
