I'm going to Poland in 2 l/2 weeks with Shtetl Shleppers, and of course one

Dear Genners,

I am hoping that there is some wonderfully kind person out there >from the
BOSTON MA area who can help me.

My g grandfather went missing he left Liverpool between 1915 - 1922 and we
believe presumably he went to BOSTON MA. USA. (to family) aged between 35 -
40. (possibly with a non jewish lady).
His name is YANKEL/JACOB/JACK/DAVIS/DAVIDOVITCH/DAVIDSON? He was born in
Panavaeys Lithuania B:1881 and died unknown.
He lived in Liverpool for 10 - 15 years married to my g grandmother AIDA
ZAPOROWSKI who went in search of him with her children - my grandparents in
the early 20's. There is evidence to support this on the Ellis Island
Database.
I have posted many many web sites in the hope someone might recognise
something both jewish and none jewish.

I am looking for a kind person >from BOSTON MA to help provide me with the
following:

1) a current telephone list of DAVIS/DAVIES >from the Boston area? (You never
know his decendants may live there?).
2)Or someone to please put me in touch with any DAVIS/DAVIDOVITCH famlies
who may help?
3) Or someone to put me intouch with a rabbi who may know the community
well? for DAVIS connections.
4) Or someone to provide me with a starting point or refernce or census for
the BOSTON area ?

Anything please, this is and has been a major missing link in our family for
years.

Hello,

Probably I can't help you much but I want to translate you this note ,
maybe you had wrong translation ?

On the left side of the note there is a remark " died
4/1
1894"

On the right side : " Abraham Brandes admits to fatherhood of Doramme
(?)
Abraham Pikholz"

I am not sure as to spelling of Doramme.

In the last few days I have seen several messages posted in which people
asked if any SIG readers in specific large U.S. cities were familiar with the surnames of relatives who had once resided there and whose descendents might be there still.

I would like to suggest that in such cases the posters also direct a similar inquiry to the JGS in that or a nearby cities, directed to the President, asking that the same request be made at the next meeting or to the members.

The addresses of the JGSs worldwide can be found at www.iajgs.org. Click on Addresses of Members and then the JGS in the nearest large city,

Re: Buried Treasure in Probate Court Records #lithuania

sman@...

I have received numerous emails asking for more information
regarding my previous email. I decided to send an email to the SIG rather
than resond individually since others may benefit >from the information as
well.

I had read previously that probate records could be a good source of
information >from relatives who had passed away. It is possible that they
named people in their will that were as yet unknown relatives and provide
new leads.

In my case my great uncle, Joseph Noar, had a will and I knew that the
lawyers had had to do some genealogy work to trace anyone who may have
made a claim. I also knew that the records were in the Kings County Courthouse, on Johnson St., since he had died in Brooklyn. I did not really expect to find any new information but you never know.

In my great uncle's case, he left half his money to his 4 brothers and 4
sisters in Vilna or their children. To make a long story short, with the
help of the Russian embassy, they found that they had died in the Holocaust but, there were 2 nephews in Soviet territory. So, the only surviving relatives were 4 nephews, my grandfather and his brother, Abraham and Julius Noar (who had come to America in 1922, sons of Joseph's brother Leizer) as well as a 2 nephews, one who moved >from Vilna to Israel (Yudel Katz, son of sister Sheina) after the war and one in Moscow (Samuil Gershonowitz) son of sister Genia).

All 4 nephews had to prove that they were related to the Joseph Noar. In
the files for the will were transcripts of the court hearing where my
grandfather and his brother testified as to their relation to Joseph Noar.
I have to tell you, as I read these transcripts and they kept referring to
photos I both wanted to jump to the end of the file in excitement and at the same time I did not want to look ahead in fear that there would be nothing there.

In addition, the other 2 nephews had sent affadavits >from Israel and Moscow stating that they were related. In those statements they told stories about the family to show that there was a connection. In addition they sent photos of their mothers to show that their mothers were sisters of Joseph Noar. One was the 2nd gymnasium report card of Sheina Noar >from Warsaw that had her final grades and photo. Others were pictures where a brother/sister had sent Sheina or Genia his/her photo and inscribed a short personal note on the back identifiying the person in the photo and the recipient (To my beloved sister Sheina.....Your brother, Hillel).

Since these photos were submitted by the 2 nephews as proof of their being
related, they are retained in the records as evidence in the hearing.

from their affidavits I learned that all the brothers and sisters lived
together in the same apartment building in Vilnius (which the family owned) and got together for all celebrations and holidays. They were very close.

The nephew in Israel explained that he was in the Vilna ghetto until being
grabbed by the German's and sent to a concentration camp. He survived the
camp and returned to Vilna after the war. He said he looked for his family (mother, father, aunts, uncles, cousins) and learned that they were all killed by the Nazis.

In addition I learned several pieces of information that may lead to new
things. It had the address of the nephew in Moscow (in the 1960's) and the fact that he was married. Perhaps he had children, more relatives and maybe they have old photo albums, etc.). He also mentioned the names of a few friends of his mother's who had also moved >from Vilnius to Moscow, more leads.

I knew of the nephew in Israel and that he had died. I had learned before
that the nursing home in Israel had destroyed his records the year before I looked for them. But, >from these probate records I learned that he had been married and had a daughter (after the war). I now have the address where he lived in Vilnius before moving to Israel. Again, maybe I can find new relatives.

Finally, Joseph Noar's wife Clara had a half brother who testified in the
case. In his testimony he explained seeing photo albums of Joseph's family. I have this half brothers address (1967) and maybe if I can trace him or his family they have these photo albums (long shot).

So, a valuable afternoon for me. The folks at the courthouse were very
nice. They have scanned the photos for me and are mailing a CD with the
pictures. I asked for both sides, 9 photos. Total cost $3.90. Such a
deal!!!

NANKIN: Lithuania to South Africa #southafrica

NOSHOWCLC@...

I'd like to know how to go about finding information in South Africa, which
is a completely new area of research for me.

I'm looking for a Lippa/Lipka/Louis NANKIN and possibly two brothers, who
left wife and children in Lithuania to find diamonds in South Africa abt
1904/05. His wife died in 1905 and two daughters went to SA to live with
him, the other three with an Aunt in the United States. The girls in the US
were not reunited with their sisters in SA for 47 years, and never saw their
father again as he died in SA.

from a US news article, I know that one sister in SA was married to a
RIGHTHOUSE and resided in Durbanville. This is my only clue to any location
in South Africa.

I'd like to find the passenger list, as well as grave and anything else about
his life in South Africa. If anyone could advise me on how to go about this,
or knows of these surnames, I'd be very grateful!
