Zelda is not a Hebrew name.
Laike and Zelda are not Hebrew either. Just because you are using *bat*,
doesn't mean that the whole name is Hebrew.

Re: MADNICK; Winnipeg and N. Dakota; 1908 #general

Tim Baker <tbaker@...>

Looking for information on the family of Isaac and Lizzie MADNICK,
previously known as MADNITZKY. Their naturalization papers say Issac was
born in Dvinsk, Latvia in 1879 and Lizzie was born in *Tulsa,* Romania in
1883.

Not sure when they left the old country, but they lived in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, were married there and apparently became British subjects before
entering the U.S. in October 1908. They lived in Grand Forks, ND for 4-5
years where their children were born: Harry in 1909, Rosie in 1910, and
Rachel in 1912. The family then lived in Bellingham, WA >from about
1913-1921 and then went to parts unknown, but eventually southern
California where Isaac died in 1953. Was it family that drew them to
Winnipeg and elsewhere, or something else?

Buried Treasure in Probate Court Records #lithuania

sman@...

I would like to share a wonderful bit of success I recently had. One of
those things that pop up after you've been sitting at a dead end for a
while.

Almost all of my Grandfather's family in Vilnius was killed in the
Holocaust. While I had names and had found pieces of information, we had no record of what they looked like.

Last week I had the chance to look at the probate records, in Brooklyn, for his uncle's will. This is an uncle that came to America >from Vilnius in 1915 and left all his money, in 1946, to his brothers and sisters or their children who were back in Vilnius.

It turned out that there were 2 cousins, children of 2 of the sisters, one
in Moscow and one in Israel, who had survived and sent proof that they were >from the family. The proof turned out to be pictures of all these relatives who had died on the holocaust. On the backs are inscriptions like "To my dear sister Sonia >from her beloved brother Hillel", etc. In addition they wrote ancedotes of the familiy >from before the war.

So I now know what they looked like and have stories that give a flavor for what the family was like.

Very exciting.

Genealogy of the MaHaRaL #rabbinic

Gilbert Hendlisz <gilbert.hendlisz@...>

Dear Siggers,

I am researching about the descendants of the older brother of the
MaHaRaL, Rav Sinai b' Bezalel.

I know that one of his sons was Rav Chaim of Konin who was the
father of Rav Yehuda Leib, Rabbi of Olkusz during the firt half of
the 17th century. This R' Yehuda Leib had, at least two sons. One
of them became very famous under the name of Rav Gavriel ESKELES. I
am interested in the second one, Rabbi Chaim (mentioned in some
works by Wettstein) or other sons I did not know about.

Any informations would be welcome.
Thanks in advance,

Gilbert Hendlisz (Brussels)
