Alfred SCHWARTZ from St. Louis #general

ELandL <e-berkowitz@...>

I am looking for genner Alfred SCHWARTZ on Stoney Side Lane in St.
Louis. Since he was an early member of the group, I wanted to confirm
his address, and was unable to do so with the phone/address
directories on the web.

Can someone in St. Louis look him up to see if he is still in the area
and send me his phone number?

Thank you.

Re: Archival Look-up through e-mail #southafrica

balden <balden@...>

To Michael Newman and others...

Just a mention about the subject of look-ups at the
National Archives.

I had great success with receiving written copies of
the requested documents in 1998.

I also wrote, but by regular mail, giving details of my family's arrival in
S.A.and the fact that I live in Israel makes it difficult for me to
personally get to the Archives in Cape Town.

I received handwritten copies of the necessary documents
due to the fact that the material also was too sensitive to
photocopy - both >from Cape Town and Johannesburg
Arhives.
If there is a problem with documents being old and
flimsy they will not photocopy, but will write the particulars
on an identical form - obviously the format has not changed
over the past 75 years.

I don't know who did the work - but it was done at the
time without a problem and without payment.

Perhaps the situation has changed now.

Question about "OVA" suffix added to family names #general

ELandL <e-berkowitz@...>

I recently received a page of testimony >from Yad Vashem and was very
surprised that instead of being listed under the surname of her
husband Alois FREUND, my great great aunt was listed under the surname
FREUNDOVA. Even more curious was that her maiden name was listed as
FANTLOVA rather than FANTL.

I would appreciate any information on why there is this variation in
family names.

Arthur Miller #general

rromem <meirromem@...>

Dear Genners,

In August I posted a question about the playwright Arthur Miller's
genealogy. I received a private reply >from some kind person giving the
address of his parents or grandparents several decades ago.
I have mislaid it.

I am writing in the hope that that person or someone else can help me with
this information.

What I trying to do is find the connection that I am told exists between
his family and my SHERMAN family.
I know his father was Louis and his grandfather Samuel, and that they were
from Radomysl Poland.
The Millers actually known to be connected to my Shermans are so far a
Mark Miller then in Louisville KY and a Harry Miller in Glasgow aboyt 1920-
1940.

Thanks in anticipation,

Ros Romem

Looking for Schepradle, Bohemia? #general

Patrick Wallach

Hello,

I have a child's birth certificate in the 1870s
showing my great-great grandfather Iqnatz BLOCH as
being >from Schepradle, Bohemia. Unfortunately, on
other documents (like another child's birth
certificate), it looks like Schefipa or (marriage
certificate) like Schepaul. The first one (Schepradle)
is seemingly written most clearly.

His death certificate in 1908 indicates Austria.

I've tried looking for this country in what is now the
Czech Republic to no avail.

Any ideas about what this city might be? You can
e-mail me privately.

Thank you!

Yacobo Geller in Argentina #general

Joel Stearman <dpastear@...>

Does anyone know of or have information about Jacobo and Fayge T. Geller
who lived in Argentina? On the back of an old photo, the following
appears: "Sr. Jacobo Geller (maybe Gessler?), Est. Gascon Col Law (Lau?
San?) Miguel, Republica Argentina. TCP."
This is as best we can read the handwriting. The rest of the writing is a
personal note in Yiddish. It is directed to Uncle Jacob and Family >from a
niece and nephew.

My great-grandfather was Jacob Besruk (Bass in the US) >from Nemirov and
Kopivka in the Ukraine.

This card was most likely sent to Baltimore, MD in the 1920's or 1930's.

Any guides for researching Jewish families in Argentina?

TIA

Re: Forename Yacha #general

Prof. G. L. Esterson <jerry@...>

Harold Pollins of Oxford posted as follows:

"My paternal grandmother was known as Golda. She thus appears in such
documents as I have seen. But on her death certificate she is shown as
Yacha Golda. I haven't come across Yacha before. Is it unusual?"

The Yiddish name Yakhe is a kinui for the Hebrew name Yokheved (Exodus
6:20). That is, it and its similar variants (Yokhe, Yokhle, Yokhlo,
Yokhne) form legal double names that would be written like this in a
Get: Yokheved hamechuna Yokhe. Actually, Yakhe (and the others) also can
be stand-alone names such that they could be used without Yokheved, as the
sole legal name of a woman. Such a name (that can be used alone) was
called a Sheym Etsem in Hebrew by the rabbis who wrote Hilchot Gitin books
about Jewish divorce law. This term is therefor a technical legal term.

HITSCHFIELD, HITSCHFIEL, KAHLER #general

Susana Leistner Bloch

We are posting this message on behalf of Mireya Hitschfeld Schwerter.
The message was received in Spanish. This is the translation:

<< I need your help in finding the origin of the surname HITSCHFIELD
and also in establishing if it is a Jewish surname. I have obtained the
following information about the Hitschfeld family:

On January 25, 1874, the boat Ceres, which transported immigrants from
the Braunau area (now Broumov in the Czech Republic) arrived in Chile,
specifically at the port of Melipulli in the city of Puerto Montt. My
great-great grandfather Michael HITSCHFELD ,>from Weckersdorf-Boehmen
now)in the Czech Republic), whose last name appears on the ship's list
without the final "d" (HITSCHFEL), was 46 years old, the widower of
Therese KAHLER, traveling with his children: Anna, Georg, Josef, Carl,
Theresia, Genoveva, Anton, Maria, and Margaretha.

In the cemetery in Broumov, there are currently Hitschfield families; I
don't know whether the last name is spelled with the final "D". I have a
copy of the ship's list when my family traveled, and you can see the name
clearly without the final "D;" I also have a copy of the passport issued
at that time by the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Michael Hitschfeld.

I hope you can help me.

Thank You.
