Re: Jewish Encyclopedia is On Line #galicia

Interesting comment on the original Jewish Encyclopedia of 1903, which we
own: The coverage in the articles is in great depth for the first half of
the series. As they ran out of money, they were forced to reduce the size
and number of the articles, with many more letters of the alphabetized series
included in each of the final volumes. In the beginning A through C covered
several volumes. T through Z is much more condensed.

I have a bit of a mystery and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions:
In the Hamburg emigration lists, there are two records for a Benjamin
and Sara BENJAMINSOHN >from Goldingen who emigrated to New York in June
1891. Given the names and the small size of Goldingen, I'm pretty sure
that these are relatives. I have searched through every possible name
variation in the online 1900 U.S. Federal census for all 50 states and
can find no record at all. ...snip...

I have extracted all Judelowitz and related spellings >from the EIDB. My
list now includes spellings with an 'e' in place of the 'o', 'v' in place of the 'w' and 'wicz' and other forms of the suffix. I have three groups of data:
Judelowitz, Judelovitz, Judelowicz and other Judelo...
Judelewitz, Judelevitz, Judelewicz and other Judele...
Judela..., Judelw... and miscellaneous spellings
The third group includes many probable names which were spelled wrong on the manifest or misread >from the manifest. I have not included the surnames Judel or Judelsohn etc. My files do not include copies of any manifest or of ship passenger records.

I have processed Yudelowitz in similar fashion.

I have organized the results in date-of-arrival order and grouped probable
families together. I have also noted if there were no other possibly
related names starting with the same letters on the same ship. I am posting this list with the following objectives:
To make the data available to other Jud... researchers
To obtain any Jud... data you may have >from any other source
if you have not previously shared it with me. I will search
my general files and send you any related data I find.

Rabbi FRUCHTER had been the functioning Rabbi at a synagogue in
Zanesville Ohio where my father was bar-mitzvahed on Shabbos Hagadol

FRUCHTER gave his farewell drasha before moving to Indianapolis.

Apparently my grandparents, who were >from small villages in the area

Do you see any possible relation between this Rabbi FRUCHTER and

DEPORTATION OF POLISH JEWS FROM GERMANY 1938. #poland

Willie Glaser

This coming October 28, 2002 will be the 64th anniversary of the deportation
of Polish Jews residing in Germany to Poland.
On October 28, 1938 some 17,000 Jews with Polish citizenship were suddenly
expelled >from Germany to Poland.
On October 29, the Polish authorities closed the border, the German
authorities had to turn around two trains full with men. women and children
and returning them to their home cities.
Most of the people pushed over the Polish border perished in the Holocaust.

I will be establishing a web site to commemorate this historical event.
If you are or know of survivors of these transports, please contact me
privately.

Willie Glaser, St. Laurent Quebec, Canada.

I have a problem with Soundex / surnames. It seems to work fairly well
with town names but surnames, and I am only referring to Yiddish / German
surnames ( since this is all I know <grin> don't work so well.

As far as a surname like TREPMAN, the variations would usually be TREFMAN,
with a possibility of TREIPMAN or TREIFMAN.
TREJBMAN on the other hand would become TREIBMAN, TREYBMAN.
If it ever became TREPMAN it would be more probable a misspelling than a
"sound alike".

Of course this "true and fast" rule does not always apply but both surnames
are well known Yiddish surnames and I have never seen them interchanged.

Regards,

Susana
