Given Mr. Altman's mention of the town of Korostyshev, I think that
Berdichev was "Berdiansh" which is probably the mistranscription made by an
EIDB volunteer.

Korostyshev is northwest of and not far >from Berdishev, where my

Viennese Mental Hospital "Steinhof" #general

Yacov asked asked about the Viennese Mental Hospital Steinhof:

"Is there any available information on patients records for the *Am

The person I am researching was supposedly admitted to this institution

Information about Austrian victims is often available through the

This is most probably town Berdyansk (current spelling per ShtetlSeeker)

Town is located in the southern part of the modern Ukraine on the Sea of

Although I have already thanked all who responded to my question about
"Kessinow, Russia" personally, I wanted to post a general thank you because
I have gotten so many responses.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that this is Kishinev, Moldava. I will now
concentrate my search there and hopefully prove the connection. I will
attempt to contact HIAS and the Balch Institute to find out what information
they can provide for me.

I am grateful to all of JewishGen.

Deportation of Polish Jews from Germany 1938. #general

Willie Glaser

This coming October 28, 2002 will be the 64th anniversaryof the deportation
of Polish Jews residing in Germany to Poland.
On October 28, 1938 some 17,000 Jews with Polish citizenship were suddenly
expelled >from Germany to Poland.
On October 29, the Polish authorities closed the border, the German
authorities had to turn around two trains full with men, women and children
and returning them to their home cities.
Most of the people pushed over the Polish border perished in the Holocaust.

I will be establishing a web site to commemorate this historical event.
If you are or know of survivors of these transports please contact me

Amer. Comm. of OSE & Child holocaust survivor #general

After much research and help >from JewishGen sources, I met a distant
relative (same name, nearby town in Poland) who survived the holocaust as a
child in hiding in France. His parents were on the list of Jews deported
from France.
Something he never got over was that no one came for him after the war. He
remembered that before the war his father wrote letters to a relative in
Brooklyn but he didn't know the name of that relative. I told him I would
help him try to locate this relative or his descendants.

Yesterday I found the Aufbau database on JewishGen and lo and behold there
is an advertisement >from the American Committee of OSE listing a Daniel
Kornblau, age 30 of Brooklyn, NY searching for Maurice and Adolphe Kornblau.
Unfortunately, the children were still in France and the ad was in a German
newspaper. Daniel never found the boys and they grew up in an orphanage in
France.

On the net I discovered that the American Committee of the OSE (World Union
for Preserving the Health of Jews) has its archives housed in the NY Public
Library's Inventory of the Emergency Committee In Aid of Displaced Foreign
Scholars Records, 1933-1945, Box 146.

Has anyone used these archives for this committee? Might the archives
contain a form that Maurice's cousin filled out to request the search for
the boys? If this archives has the information, I might find Maurice's
relatives after 57 years. Any help is much appreciated. Time is running out
for Maurice. Thanks in advance.

Barbara L. Kornblau
Maurice's father was born in Czarna, Poland near Lancut and Rzeszow and his

Details on Newark Evening News name index? #general

Alex Bender <alemik@...>

Hello,
I've heard that there is a name index in book form of the Newark
Evening News. I went online and searched for more information on
this item, but wasn't very successful. I'd appreciate it if somebody
could tell me exactly what the book indexes - supposedly it's every
name that ever appeared in the newspaper. What range of years
does it index? Does it simply list names and the dates of papers in
which they appear?

I am in California. Is there any way for me to access the index
and/or the paper archives without traveling to New Jersey?

This would be quite valuable to me, as my grandfather was a
journalist at the paper, and many other ancestors either died or
were married in Newark. Thanks for any pointers.

Dear Genners,

I have gleaned the following information >from the BelarusSIG and

this information is special so I took the liberty of extracting it.

Issie Fine, >from the Belarus SIG recently visited Halifax,

to Canada >from 1928 to 1971 arrived and is now a Museum. Mr. Fine
calls it "Canada's equivalent to Ellis Island."

They have a resource center where a member of the staff was able to
locate his father on a database and he was able to obtain a copy of the

For those of you who may be intrested in ordering tapes >from the
