Sorting the text manifest by line number #galicia

Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>

Looks like Steve Morse has done it again. I just visited his Ellis Island
Jewish-Passenger website and discovered that he has incorporated the ability
to sort the text version of the manifest by line numbers.
The Ellis Island folks used to sort it that way initially (that
certainly makes the most sense) but many months ago they made a change
and the passengers are now displayed in a random order. For the life of
me, I can't understand why they did that.

What Steve has done (the work was actually done by a computer genius in
Switzerland -- Yves Goulnik) is to intercept the text manifest that the
Ellis Island site sends back and re-sort it so that the passengers are
in the right order.

To see this in action, go to Steve's Jewish-passenger search form:

http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/ellis/ellisjw.html

and do a search. When you get the results you'll see a link that says
"text manifest" and another that says "text manifest (sorted)".
Clicking on the first link gives the text manifest that the Ellis Island
site created and the second link gives Yves' rearrangement of the
manifest.

So far this only works if you access the text manifest starting from
Steve's blue (Jewish Passenger) search form. But when I asked about
that, Steve said that Yves is currently looking into extending that to
work with the white (all passenger) search form as well.

If you have any questions regarding this new feature, please send your
inquiries directly to Steve Morse as I have no expertise or any information
about it.

Good luck!

Death of Nat Abramowitz #galicia

Marian Rubin

Nat Abramowitz, who died last week in New Jersey, can be credited
for important advances in Galician genealogical research. Nat was one of
the earliest researchers to bring us news that some western Galicia vital
records and other documents were held in the Lviv Archives. He met
a Ukrainian researcher who had access to the Lviv Archives. When
Nat was convinced that this researcher understood the needs of
Jewish genealogists, he announced in the Galitzianer that Alexander
Dunai was available to do research, and he provided Dunai's addresses
as well as detailed instructions for contacting him. Many genealogists
were able to make breakthroughs in their research by hiring Alex Dunai,
and it was Nat who made this possible.

Nat did extensive research in Krakow, Rzeszow and Tyczyn and other
locations, in addition to his research in Romania. He was generous
in sharing his work, and when he found my family names among
the records he obtained, he always sent me copies.

The following was posted by Dr. Naomi Lowi of Montreal on the JewishGen and
Romanian Sig Discussion Groups today, August 29.

She has requested that I post it here as Nat was involved with both JRI and
GG due to his interest in Tyczyn, Poland.

He will be sorely missed and I'm sure everyone joins me in expressing
condolences to Lucille.

Lucille (nee Rader) ABRAMOWITZ gave me permission to tell you of the death
of her husband,Nat P.Abramowitz ,on August 24,2002. Cause of death was a
heart attack. Nat was a strong contributor to Romanian Jewish genealogy
and especially to the history of Jewish life in the town of Podu Iloaiei.
He translated a book of 168 pages >from Romanian to English, describing the
history, local economy, cultural activities etc. including several censuses
of the Jews living in the town. Rom-Sig News vol.5,number 2 reported on
this project. Nat was an engineer by profession. He lived in Westmont.
N.J. and leaves, besides his wife,Lucille,2 sons Arthur and Robert and
their
families,a brother Lewis Allen, and many friends.

The book by Benjamin Meirtchak was published in 2001 and is,
obviously, under copyright. Permission >from Mr. Meirtchak would be

What a surprising first reaction to a proposed project! Can we be a
little more positive? Of course, there is no plan to violate any
rights. In fact, I now have the signed permission of the author,
Benjamin Meirtchak.

Through interlibrary loan, I have collected 6 volumes that list Jews
who served in the armed forces in Poland during World War II. The
author is Benjamin Meirtchak. (Details are below.) Within each
volume, there are many separate lists, thereby making a thorough
search for a surname across all of the volumes quite tedious. It
would certainly be useful to have these lists available on the web.
I count about 600 pages in these books, for a total of (likely) over
ten-thousand names. Has anyone considered trying to make such a
database on the web? Or perhaps does one already exist?
