(Poland) Polish Government Donates Equivalent of $28 Million To Help Restore Major Warsaw Jewish Cemetery #warsaw #poland

Jan Meisels Allen

The Polish government donated 100 million zlotys equivalent to $28 million
USD to restore and protect the Jewish Cemetery on Okopowa Street in Warsaw.
This is one of the largest government donations toward preserving the
Jewish culture which was virtually wiped-out during the Shoah.

The Okopowa Street Jewish Cemetery has 250,000 graves of Polish Jews. It
was established in 1806 and has many notables buried there. Many sections
of the cemetery have broken tombstones, and unreadable inscriptions. The
Cultural Heritage Foundation, which preserves Polish heritage sites, will
oversee the preservation work at the cemetery. The donation established an
endowment which is to cover cleaning the cemetery, preserving its tombstones
and monuments and reinforcing an outer wall.

ViewMate translation request - Russian - Five Elbinger siblings #poland

Yossi M. Yeinan <yosef@...>

Dear All,

I've posted 5 vital records in Russian for which I need a translation.

They are on ViewMate at the following addresses:

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM63234

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM63238

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM63240

I think that these are my American born grandfather's five older
(European born) siblings but apparently only two came to America.
I know this >from the ship manifest carrying my great grandparents
to America where only two children are listed. No one in the family
today knows why and we never met any of them growing up so we are
very eager to learn what we can about our great aunts and uncles
from these records. Thank you for your help. It means a great deal to us.
Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application.

Thank you very much,

Yehudit Chana Yeinan (nee Elbinger)

Maiden Name Possibilities Query #general

Linda Zolinsky

My ggmother Etta ZOLINSKY and family immigrated to the US in 1901 and went directly
to Boston. The manifest stated her last residence was Suwalk.

In 1902 she gave birth and listed her maiden name as LEFKERR on the child's birth
certificate. In 1906 she gave birth and used LEVENSON as her maiden name. In 1907
one of Etta's daughter's married and on her marriage record her mother's maiden
name is LIVINGSTON. In 1909 Etta gave birth again and used LEFTO as her maiden
name. Documents after 1909 have her maiden name as LIVINGSTON. My ggfather's 1909
Petition for Naturalization says Etta was born in Romsey, Russia. I have not found
any Romsey in Russia or Poland. There is no maiden name on her 1948 death
certificate.

I would like to find records >from Russia/Poland but I do not know what could
be her original name. What could be some possibilities? When I input each
maiden name separately into JRI Poland there are possibilities but I'm wondering
if there could be one more likely with all the different names she used.
