Visit to Linkuva and Bauska #lithuania

Robin Aaronson <grandvizier51@...>

Last summer, my brother and I visited Linkuva, the shtetl where our
ancestors lived for many generations. We also went to Pakruojis and
Joniskis, as well as Bauska in Latvia, where my grandfather was born.

I have written an account of this journey, which may be of interest to
those with connections to any of these places, or the area more
generally. Much of it is personal, but it also describes how these
towns look today and what sense of a Jewish past one can gain there.

If anyone would like to see this account, please contact me and I will
be delighted to send it to you.

Shlomo of Salomon Finkelman from Buczacz #general

I'm looking for Shlomo Finkelman, who lived before the war and during the war in
Buchach. I known that Shlomo Finkelman after the war repatriated to Israel with his
new wife. In Israel, he had two sons. I'm looking for them.

Isaac NATHAN. b Canterbury, Professor of Music, Sydney #general

Suzie Woodward <vestlaybanks@...>

I do not know whether or not this email will get on the right forum...but am
hoping someone can help. I am doing some research for a friend whose 3x great-
grandfather was Isaac NATHAN. Isaac was reputedly born in Canterbury around 1790
but I can find no proof of that. His father is seen named as Menahem Mona/Monash
and his mother Mary/Mariana Lewis, sometimes also referred to as Mrs Goldsmith!
Again I have no proof.(Why doesn't Isaac's father have the surname NATHAN???)

I believe Isaac married twice:
First marriage. 16 Jul 1812. Isaac married Rosetta Elizabeth Worthington at
St Mary Abbots Church, Kensington. I have a copy of that parish register entry.
Second marriage: 3 Oct 1826. Isaac married Henrietta BUCKLEY (1806-1898) at
the same church as above. I have no proof.

Information obtained >from various sites on the Internet states that Isaac's
first wife converted to Judaism and a Jewish Ceremony also took place for
this wedding at the Western Synagogue, London. Isaac's second wife,
apparently, did not convert to Judaism and did not sign the Jewish marriage
contract; nevertheless that ceremony apparently took place in the Canterbury
Synagogue?

Isaac's first wife died young apparently at Nelson Street, London and is
said to be buried in Brompton Cemetery. I have no proof of that either!
I know of at least one child of that marriage (Caroline Louisa NATHAN b
about 1817) but understand there were more.

Isaac remarried, and in 1841 he and his family emigrated to Australia where
he eventually carved out a career and was revered as Professor of Music at
Sydney University. He died in 1864 and I have found details of his tragic
death when he was dragged underneath a slowly moving tram.

The majority of the above information was gleaned >from the Internet with one
or two exceptions. I have no proof, and as a researcher, I feel that is
essential. So can anyone help me...

Where were Isaac's 2 Jewish weddings held? Are here any records? Who were Isaac's
children of his first wife? Where is her death record? Who were Rosetta's parents?
Some say she was born in Ireland? Who were Henrietta BUCKLEY's parents?

Can anyone please help or point me in the right direction. I have scoured
the JewishGen website but very little comes up except Isaac is listed in the
Pre-1850s Jewish database as a musician and a reference TJHSE 1816. What
does this mean?

Many thanks and sorry this has seemed so long.
Regards
Suzie Woodward (residing in Orkney)

Visit to Bauska and towns in Lithuania #courland #latvia

Last summer, my brother and I visited Bauska in Latvia, where my
grandfather was born. We also went to Linkuva, the shtetl where our
ancestors lived for many generations, Pakruojis and Joniskis.

I have written an account of this journey, which may be of interest to
those with connections to any of these places, or the area more
generally. Much of it is personal, but it also describes how these
towns look today and what sense of a Jewish past one can gain there.
