MAY Family #germany

JONATHAN.ROSE@...

The Moses MAY & Judel LEVY, parents of Nathan MAY, changed to Jonathan
ROOS in 1808, living then Speyer, my third great grandfather, apparently
living in Landau in 1807.

Moses MAY is described as a 'master of writing of the Hebrew language.
I am trying to find more information about them. In particular,
I want to find out if they changed their names in 1808. I was unable
to find any name change records for Landau although I found them for
many other towns in Germany.

Does anyone know how to find the name change records for
Landau. Perhaps they are consolidated with another town.

Second, I want to find out when & where Moses MAY & Judel LEVY died.

Thank you very much. Jonathan Rose Phoenix, Arizona Jonathan.Rose@asu.edu

Herschberg/Herszberg #galicia

Shmuel Herschberg <shmoogle@...>

Hi,

I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if there's any
information about my lineage that I have yet to discover.

On my paternal side, my family hails >from the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
(region) in a village called Voynilov, which has been spelled by some
as Wojnilower, Wojnilow (the Polish spelling), and Wolnilover, which
is presently in the western Ukraine.

My great-grandfather, Chaim Herschberg, left Galicia in 1912 and his
father, my great-great-grandfather, was named Nosson Herschberg.
Nosson must have been born in the 1830-50s. I have never
confirmed this, but I just came across a family list of names that
puts his father's name as Meyer, who would be my
great-great-great-grandfather.

Does anyone have any more information on my family and/or the
village that they came from?

Thank you,

Shmuel Herschberg

Bessarabia SIG new website! #bessarabia

Yefim Kogan

Hi everybody,

It is a very important day today. Our Bessarabia SIG upgraded website to a
modern, database driven website.

The address of the website is the same:
https://www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/

Here are just few important innovations:

- We have on front page a clickable map, which allows you to click on a
district, town/shtetl, and find out what is available for the town/shtetl
- Articles on different topics are grouped in a way that easy to find.
Article are linked to geographical entity: province, district or town
- Search the website: On the upper right corner there are ways to search
the site
- You can meet our Bessarabia SIG Leadership group - click on About /
Leadership
- There is a menu option dedicated to Cemetery projects and also a menu
option dedicated to Yizkor Book projects. Please explore them
- Town and District menu option will bring you to everything about
towns/shtetl and if you are in a town page you may see the articles
associated with that town if existed

There are many projects we are working on, not yet in the system, and we
will continue to improve the site in coming months.
We tried to move everything >from the "old" site to the new one, but if you
know of an article which was in the "old" site, but not in the new one,
please let us know!! We will fix it
There are might be some minor issues, like a link not working, please let us
know about it, and we will fix it

I want to thank our Information System Director Ariel Parkansky who gave us
his software to manage the website. Ariel not only gave us the system, but
also helped us to making it as best as possible for our members. Also many
help to our Leadership https://www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/ABT_Board.asp
group who corrected pages, and made the site better.

There is one project which was never added to the old site, but only to this
new site: Gallery of Famous Jews. You can get to it >from People / Gallery
of Famous Jews, and there are three sections of the project you can access.
Thanks a lot to Bianca Gamarnik for a great job.

Please let us know if you have any questions, issues, comments.

Mount Sinai Cemetery - Is that Machpelah and, if so, how do you find a grave? #general

A. E. Jordan

I am confused.

There was a cemetery in Queens New York called Mount Sinai. I think I just
figured out that it is part of or the older name for Machpelah Cemetery.

Does anyone have any experience with Machpelah if I am correct that they are
the same. I believe it is abandon, so how do you locate graves?

Thank you.

Allan Jordan

I have posted on ViewMate the marriage document of Jakob BERNEY
and Sara GOLDSCHMITT in Ebersheim, Germany on 16 Oct 1814.
The document spreads over 2 pages, so I've had to post it in 2 parts.

I previously posted the marriage document of their siblings,
my 3rd great grandparents Leopold GOLDSCHMITT and Klara BERNEY,
and am still trying to untangle this family. >from the previous
document, I have been given several interpretations of the first
and last names of both mothers, so am hoping this document might
help clarify these facts. I'd appreciate any other information
and thoughts >from this document (including other names, dates,
relationships and places).
