Jakob ben Ascher #rabbinic

gregor brand <Gregor.Brand@...>

Does someone know, if Jakob ben Ascher (1269 - 1343), famous
author of Arba´ah Turim, who was born in the German Rhineland
and later went with his family to Toledo (Spain), was a Levite?
Is there anyone, who has information about the descendants of
R. Jakob?

R. Akiva EGER and the MaHaRaL #rabbinic

gregor brand <Gregor.Brand@...>

According to my information, R. Akiva EGER was a descendant of
R. Judah LOEW of Prague, the MaHaRaL. The grandmother of R. Akiva
was Sarah BRAUDE, a granddaughter of Rachel PFERSEE, who descended
from Rachel KOPPEL HELLER-WALLERSTEIN (died in 1663/64 in Vienna).
Rachel KOPPEL HELLER-WALLERSTEIN was a granddaughter of the
MaHaRaL's daughter, Rachel LOEW, who was married to Abraham HaLevi
HELLER.

Can someone confirm this line or is there a mistake?

Best wishes

Barbara C. Johnson <barbaracjohnson@...>

Am looking for a family named Cholfin who went around 1900 >from Brichany/Briceni to
Brazil, perhaps in the Sao Paolo area..

Brichany/Briceni was at the time under the control of Russia, but my grandfather
said it was Romania.
Turned out it was really Moldavia, now Moldova.

There was a son or grandson named Samuel Cholfin, who worked for the Sao Paolo
branch of American Machne and Foundry in the late 1950s.

I believe he had been named after my grandfather, Samuel Cholfin, who had come to
Massachusetts in 1903 instead of Brazil, where his brother went.

Carol,

Have you gone back to the laboratory that did the DNA testing? It seems
worthwhile to ask if they got one of the specimens jumbled with someone
else's?

Thank you, Diane, for responding. That must be something new. My uncle and I
received nothing but scientifically obscure literature with the results. If
Bennett Greenspan is tuned in on this discussion, perhaps he can see to it that
we receive such information, if, indeed, it is available.

First, I want to express my thanks for the bulk of messages making well
considered and reasonable suggestions as to how this circumstance could
have come about. Rather than respond individually, I think it would be
more beneficial if I compiled the suggestions and responded in that
fashion. It will take a day or two, and since the messages are pouring
in.... some not being posted to the lists since they were only sent to me
privately, some being refused by moderators since JewishGen does not
permit flaming, I will need some time to gather and organize all the
suggestions.

Keep thinking folks, your thoughts and suggestions are always welcome.

Is there someone in Tel-Aviv who could check a Tel-Aviv address for me--or
maybe even make a phone call to determine if these are the folks I am
looking for?

Please respond privately.
