Agreed. They offer a three-part course in reading old German handwriting (Kurrentschrift), as well as various supporting handouts. See https://www.familysearch.org/ask/learningViewer/38.

Yehuda Berman
There is the official name, the one on all the documents, there is the Jewish name, the one their parents gave them and used to be called up to the torah if male and on their ketuba (aka kesiba) [=Jewish wedding certificate], and the name they went by on the street. My mother and her siblings went by their Russian names which were not necessarily their official names. My uncle's Hebrew name was Eliyahu, his official American name was Louis, but the name he went by with family and friends was Alec. When I studied Russian I learned that Alec is how the Russian name spelled Oleg in English is actually pronounced.

I googled 'Old German Script Handwriting Guide', and surprise, surprise, it came up. I won't provide the link, I will provide a way to find what you are looking for! It is much better to learn how to do things than to have to ask for everything.

Searching Goldstein and Kaufer
#names
Stuart Kaufer
I have stumbled on a family secret, looking for anyone who might know or direct me where to unearth. My paternal GM Fannie Lebovitz Kaufer was married prior to her marriage to my GF Edward Kaufer. She married, according to Chicago records Harry Goldstein in May 1904. In June 1904 my aunt Lilly Goldstein was born a month after Harry and Fannie married. Clearly she was pregnant at the time she married Harry Goldstein. There is no record that I can find of a divorce. Fanny married my GF Edward 20 June 1912 and they divorced in 1921& she went on to marry 2 other men. Lilly Goldstein's name was changed to Lilly Kaufer when they were married. I do not know if he formally adopted her. If anyone in the Goldstein family knows anything, if this story was passed down in family lore, I would like to learn more. My GF was 28 at the time he married Fannie, perhaps that was old for the time and that is why he married someone with a child, which I would think was rare back then?
Thank you Stuart Kaufer

What town is Kodmo Russia?

Fran Stark-Hundiak
Friends,
I hope someone can help me. My great grandfather lists his birthplace as Kodmo Russia on his French Naturalization documents. On his American Naturalization documents he lists Kishinev on one document and Kodowo on another. I need help identifying the actual place. Here is what I know. First child was born in Kishinev in 1881, Second child born in Odessa 1884, Third child born in Kishinev 1888. No actual records found for any of these births. 2nd Wife is from Gaisin. His two sisters lived in Odessa in 1907 per his statement on passenger list. I looked on the Jewishgen Town finder and came up with 3 possibilities. Can anyone narrow these down further? Thank you for any help you can provide. Fran Stark-Hundiak Michigan USA

Bonnie Birns
The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island is delighted to invite you to our next monthly meeting featuring our guest speaker, the GeneaVlogger and new IAJGS Board member, Jarrett Ross. You may know Jarrett from his many YouTube videos or his historic performance in the Genealogy Death Match at the IAJGS conference.
Unfortunately, we can’t see Jarrett in person, but we have the next best thing, a Zoom video conference. JGSLI is extending the invitation to the broader genealogy community. We ask that you register in advance (see below). Please share with your friends! Sunday, September 13th, 2-4 PM, via Zoom Speaker: Jarrett Ross This presentation will explore multiple case studies in researching Jarrett’s own family history using genetic genealogy. Using different types of DNA tests and multiple techniques to identify significant DNA matches Jarrett was able to expand multiple branches of his tree and find lost cousins, for both his Ashkenazi and Sephardi ancestry. Jarrett began researching his own family history in 2009 and currently serves as the vice president of the Triangle JGS in North Carolina and as an IAJGS Board Member. There are two ways to join our meeting:
When: Sep 13, 2020 02:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
This webinar is free and open to the public.
I look forward to "seeing" you all then!

I need help. I created an on-line family tree with Family Tree Maker in 2005. I believe the app was owned by Genealogy.com. I subsequently lost the password and forgot about the tree, as I have used Ancestry for many years. I later learned the tree is still posted and easily found with google. I tried toe contact family tree maker but it had changed hands and said they couldn’t help. The problem is that I was unsophisticated at the time. The tree has many errors and does adequately protect confidentiality. I obviously bear personal responsibility for creating this problem. PLEASE HELP you can. I feel terrible about this. Thank you very much. Jeffrey Palmer Researching PINKOWITZ (Yedinitz, Bessarabia); HARFENIST (Galicia); WEINSTEIN (Russia), DOKTOR or DOCTOR (Bohemia); SWERNOFSKY (Minsk)

Hi all,
A friend contact me asking if I could help him find information about potential Jewish roots of the Hoferice family in Bohemia. He expects that the name may have been altered somewhat over the years. The family in the 20th century was Catholic and noble. Thanks a lot, Jacob Labendz

Further clarifications:
FTM by itself does not do Descendant Fan Charts - hence the need for Charting Companion 10 or more generations supported, but it will require some messing with page size and font size Hebrew is one of the supported languages in Charting Companion Charting Companion is not free -- Jeff Goldner Researching Goldner, Singer, Neuman, Braun, Schwartz, Reichfeld (Hungary/Slovakia); Adler, Roth, Ader (Galicia); Soltz/Shultz (Vitebsk, maybe Lithuania)

For fan charts, Family Tree Maker by itself, no. You would need the Charting Companion software add-on from Progeny. I haven't tried Hebrew but it doesn't hurt to ask them.
