Pomorzany (Pomoriany) 1845 Cadastral Map – now on the Gesher Galicia Map Room #galicia #poland #ukraine

Jay Osborn

New on the Gesher Galicia Map Room: An 1845 cadastral map of the
center of Pomorzany (now Pomoriany in western Ukraine):

https://maps.geshergalicia.org/cadastral/pomorzany-pomoriany-1845/

It's an unusual record, held in a Polish national archive despite its
geographic subject being located in Ukraine. Only a single sheet of
the full map is available, but that sheet fortunately covers the
center of the town, and features the market square, two churches and a
large synagogue, a mill, many residential and commercial buildings,
plus the castle for which the town is still famous. The page title
calls it a copy, and both the sheet format and the label lettering
suggest this excerpt was drafted well after the 1845 survey map from
which it was copied. The original paper map is preserved by the
Archiwum Narodowe w Krakowie; the digital copy was brought to our
attention by Philip Rosinsky.

The image attached to this post is a low-resolution preview; to see
the complete interactive map at full resolution, click the link above
and zoom in.

Along with various spellings, try wildcards in Soundex records.  My father's family name was Slonimsky, but recently when I asked for help here, people found some records I had never seen with the spellings Sloninsky and Slominsky.

My great grandfather was not found on the traditional Ellis Island search because he had been detained for 24 hours. On his naturalization papers was the arrival date and ship. With that information, I located the ship's manifest on Ellis Island and there was his name and an explanation of those 24 hours.

Jewish man as Mayor of shtetl Teofipol Imperial Russia #russia #general

Marilyn Levinson

Dear researchers
My grandmother was born in 1894 in Teofipol.  She emigrated to the United States in 1909.  She told my mother who was born in 1920 that her uncle was Mayor of her town.  Would it be possible for a Jewish man to be a mayor as we understand it today, or is it more probably a title given to him regarding the Jewish community.  Thank you for your help.

Re: Help Please Deciphering Ellis Island Cursive Handwriting from 1909 #records #names #belarus

rroth@...

Looks like "Ruzk" to me -- the "R" is the same as in "Russia" and on the last entry you can see several places where this writer wrote a capital "S" and it is very different.
"Ruzk" shows up in column 29.  In column 11 there is "Ruzsh" which I would guess is the German word for the nationality "Russian" but this column is clearly for an address. As is 29.
Anyway, convenient of her to get her name right at the top where the column headings are.

The birth town does seem to begin with an R. Column 10 shows that Ester's mother Beile lives in what might be Ruzoh or Ruzok (or Ruzhoh, Ruzhok), Minskiy. So this town was in Minsk gubernia, as was Slutsk. I looked but couldn't find a town near Slutsk with a name that sounded like that.

Steven Cohen

Keep going in wider circles.  In addition to variations in last name, the first name may be completely different from what the person came to be known as in the US, the year may be different from what you think, etc.

It took me forever to find the records for my grandfather - unsurprising, in retrospect, since Morris Cohen is shown in the ship's manifest as Mordche Ber Katz.  (If your ancestor was by any chance a Cohen or Katz, or something similar like Kahan, try all those variants.)  And the person who transcribed the records had trouble with the handwriting and/or wasn't familiar with Hebrew/Yiddish names, so the index lists him as "Marduke Per Katz."

Good luck -

Steve Cohen

Ancestry has the 1924 city directory but not 1923:or 1925. Besides the local library suggested above, there is a state of Missouri historical website where I’ve found listings for other Missouri towns.

One of my techniques to deal with spelling problems is to write the name in my sloppiest handwriting, and then consider various misinterpretations of the letters.

My paternal grandmother came to the US using the passport of one of her sisters. I knew the year she arrived and the names of her sisters, but it still took me over a decade of periodically searching at ellisisland.org until I finally came close enough to the actual misspelling of the family surname to find the record I was looking for.

Good Morning Everyone,

I sent this response to Felisa, but since there might be other researchers interested in St. Jospeph the response to jer is below.

Asa general note...rabbis tend to be a good source of information about local Jewish communities.  They may not have all the info, but they know where to look and who has knowledge....

Hi Felisa,

I was the rabbi at Temple Adath Joseph in St. Joe from 1995 to 1999.  At one time there was a good sized Jewish population with several active synagogues.  Currently only Temple Adath Joseph remains.  The congregation has a Facebook page.

The St. Jospeh public library has a genealogy page on its website that includes city directories.

There is also a northwest Missouri genealogical society that has a website.

The challenge is the fact of whether or not your ancestors were present when the records were collected.

Good luck with your research.

Rabbi Matt Friedman

My Great Grandfather Wolf Jacobowitz is also buried in Mount Zion, as well as my Kreinik family's Shtetl, Sedziszow Malopolski.

This is why I find genealogy fascinating.

Seeking descendants of Genowefa Korc #poland #warsaw

GEORGE MASON

Genowefa Korc was the administrative secretary for my Father's Uncle, Alexander Lorski, during the 1930's, in Warsaw. After the Nazi invasion, she faithfully visited Alexander and his wife in the Warsaw Ghetto, until they died in August of 1942. After the war, she lived in Konstancin-Jeziorna, and died in 1971. I am seeking information on any descendants of Genowefa Korc who may have information on her and her employer, Alexander Lorski.
Thank You,
