Viewmate - Hebrew Tombstone #general

Victor Brilliant

I would once again be grateful for some help with a translation of a
tombstone - this time of my mgm, Esther Porter (formerly Golomb).
There are 4 lines of Hebrew, and I can manage some of it, but other bits
have me beat.

Line 1: (I think) says "Beloved wife ..." but I cannot work out the last
word "vav hay ayin dalet yud nun hay".
Line 2: "Mrs. Esther bat Moshe Yosef ..." but what is the abbreviation
"zayin ' lamed" at the end?
Line 3: "Died Thursday 23 Adar II"
Line 4: "and brought to the grave Sunday 26th, in (5)695"

So she died on Thursday 28 March 1935, and, not being buried before
shabbat, was interred on Sunday 31 March.
I have got this far with the aid of a Hebrew dictionary. Can anyone kindly
confirm or correct my efforts, and fill in the missing words?

'ben Yisroel' on gravestones.. #general

Howard Zakai

Genners,

I had recently posted a question regarding Ocean View Cemetery and the
grave site of Elias Steinberg, a possible ancestor. I learned there is
Hebrew United Cemetery right to the back of Ocean View, in which this Elias
was buried. I took a little trip and found the grave stone. Like the
death certificate stated, he died April 1911. The Hebrew said "Eliahu ben
Yisroel."
Now, according to the Revision List Records >from Kvedarna, Russia, MY
ancestor Eliash Steinberg was the son of Hirsh. So, this individual buried
here would NOT be my ancestor unless the 'Yisroel' here is not indicating
his father. The death certificate states that parents' names were unknown.
So I ask everyone if they would then put "ben Yisroel" on the stone as to
mean 'son of the nation of Israel" (like they do in naming converted
Jews).
Your insight is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

MURAWTZIK Family #rabbinic

Michael Gross <nomdevdt@...>

My grandfather, Chai (or Isaac) MURAWTZIK came to America >from Turov
in September 1910. He was born in about 1886. His father's name was
Nathan, his mother's was (according to a 1913 marriage certificate)
Fannie Lagalevitz. It has always been said in the family that he was
descended >from rabbis, so when I saw a version of the family name on
the rabbinical sig's web site I grew curious. But there seems to be
nothing on the web or in the Jewish Encyclopedia on the family. Can
anyone out there tell me anything at all about my family?

Hello,

I am looking for informations about the rabbis in OLKUSZ (ELKESH)
during the 16th and 17th centuries. Has anyone heard about a list
of those rabbis or a publication (yizkor book or other) on this
subject? Thanks for your reply.

Avraham Yisachar Dov ZILBERCAN \ ZYLBERCAN #rabbinic

Yaron Rotman <yarotman@...>

I wonder if anyone has information on one of my ancestor -
R' Avraham Yisachar Dov ZILBERCAN of Warszwa. According to a family
tree compiled many years ago by a distant relative, he was married
to the granddaughter of Rebbe Moshe BIDERMAN, the Admor of Lelow
and son of R' David BIDERMAN of Lelow ("Dudike Lelover"), the
founder of the Lelow dynasty. His son, Shimon Isaac ZILBERCAN was a
dayan in Zawichost and a chasid of the Gradzisk dynasty. Several
ZYLBARCANs are mentions in JRI-PL records >from Warszwa and in the
Warszwa homeowners lists.

"Ozar Harabanim" and Dr. Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" mention
Yisachar Dov ZILBERCAN as av-beit din in Lubraniec in 1890. I'm
guessing he and my ancestor are either the same person, or a close
cousin (they should be of the same approximate generation). Does
anyone have any data on R' ZILBERCAN >from Lubraniec or the names of
his children ? What were the sources for their mention in these
genalogic works ?

Hi,

I know that 43 Eldridge Street is located in ED#167 in the 1900 Federal
Census. That should give you a good start.

Yes, I also found the above work to be excellent. My family's
shtetele was/is incredibly tiny, a real "backwater", & yet this
Slownik has a decent entry for it describing the land, surroundings,
river & a little bit of its history. Luckily a friend of mine in
Poland was able to translate it for me.
