Re: First time researcher looking for help with Dutch Jewish ancestry #records

kesspark@...

Here is a link below to a list of web sites. The Dutch records can be readily available and quite detailed. I found a record for the Park surname applied to my husband’s family in 1812, their addresses from the 1800s, holocaust lists, vital records, cemetery plots. I wish my Eastern Europe family records were as easily found

My husband’s Dutch family were cigar makers, relocated to London for a few years then to Boston in the 1860s.

Marcia, that is exactly the question I have always wondered about. My great grand parents emigrated from Ukraine to Argentina in 1889 and nobody could tell me how they got from their shtetl to Bremen, near Hamburg. As a matter of fact, I have written a summary of the information I could gather, mostly from different sites on the Internet. Only, it is in Spanish… If you can read that language, I could send the PDF to you (and to anybody interested).

Re: 1899 Psychiatric Diagnosis #records #usa

Aubrey and Paul,

Both of you have supported what I thought -- that at the time Terminal Dementia was a catch-all categorization for a spectrum of psychiatric symptoms.
The man in question could have had brain damage at birth and just become too difficult to manage at home as an adolescent. He could have developed symptoms later. There's no way of knowing as none his family who would have known is living. In addition, when Essex County Hospital for the Insane moved to Cedar Grove, NJ and became Overbrook in the early 20th century, his records probably went with him. Overbrook is now razed, and pictures from its abandonment show that patient records were left in the basement to rot. There may be court records of his original committal as the family had to post a "bond" for his care at the institution.
Thanks for replying.

Dear Bernard,  Thank you so very much for these many paths to follow, and I definitely will follow every single one.  This is so helpful. We lost so many who resided in Lodz, from grandparents to parents to children, even the littlest of babies. Both Anna and Israel's families were completely gone upon their release from Siberia and then after work farms in Russia. They nearly died themselves, but having lost their families carried deep pain for the remainder of their lives even as they built a life together finally in America.I think you for this deeply. Amy,
I read the father's name as Kaltwaser, Abr. Marcus. The Conditio column seems to have occupations in it. I read it as Kinderlehrer, meaning children's teacher.

I hope this helps,

Hi
If the church with birth records were found on the border of Poland and Slovakia and the town of residence cannot be understood on the certificate, help please, where do I go from here? (Zoomed in on the map, masked the map so I can see both areas before 1877 and up to 1933, Poland or Slovakia).
The Church is Rabca Namestovo

Thank you in advance

Re: Life in a Siberian logging camp #russia

Eva Robotnick

I wasn't in a Siberian logging camp "laagers" but both my parents were.
My mother's family (and herself) were transported by train from Grodek Jagiellonski (by NKVD) to Bodaybo
(near Irkutsk), Siberia. If you are a member of Gesher Galicia, I have an article in this December issue entitled
"The Raab Family From Generation to Generation" which gives some info regarding
their life in a logging camp outside of Bodaybo, and later at a "sovkhoz" (Soviet state-owned farm near Saratov).

My father was taken by the NKVD from Bialystok to a logging camp in northern Siberia (Syktyvkar,
region Rofstug in the Komi Republic, part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast).

Again, I myself was not alive at the time, so all of my info are just stories I have from my parents.
If interested, you can contact me at email:  erobotnick@...

Translation Help Needed for Birth Record #names

Hi,

Is anyone able to decipher the name of the parents to Jachet Rachel on this birth record?  I can't determine if her father is an Abr. (Abraham) or an Ahr. (Aharon).  She is located on line #76.

Additionally, what does the "Conditio" column mean?  I understand that is Latin for "condition", but I don't understand the context.

Thanks in advance!

OCJGS December Meeting on Sunday at 10:00 am Pacific Time #jgs-iajgs #announcements #events

Michelle Sandler

The next Orange County California JGS meeting is Sunday December 20th
at 10:00 am. Lara Diamond: Finding Family in the Old Country: Getting
creative when records are scarce.
European borders were fluid, meaning that records for one family can
be written in many languages and kept in disparate locations. This
talk examines one large family that lived in the area that now spans
the Ukraine/Romanian border. They lived there while it was part of
Hungary, Czechoslovakia & Romania, Hungary again, Soviet Union and
Ukraine. Records from this area were kept in multiple languages and
are currently held in several modern countries and different archives
within those countries. What ended up being a very large family was
reconstructed using a variety of methods, including synagogue records,
vital records, census enumerations, Holocaust documents, Yizkor books,
DNA and more. This talk will discuss the wide variety of resources
used to reconstruct this family over the course of decades, bringing
the family back to the 1700s and tracing distant cousins across the
world. Registration is required. Register on our website

Only first name known, unknown last name in New Jersey #names #usa

Marilyn Robinson

Several years ago, I found a September, 1963 letter addressed to my maternal grandmother, Gussie Levine Schultz, signed by a nephew, "Peter". He referred to my grandmother as his "aunt". The  letter was from West-Long Branch, NJ., but no street address was listed. It was signed as, "Peter & Elise & children (three of them)". One of the children's names mentioned, was "Roland"; no other names were included in the note.

A couple of my grandmother's siblings were from NJ & perhaps this was one of their families (perhaps grandchildren), but I've never heard of these people.

The last names of NJ relatives that I know of were: REICHMAN (or RICHMAN)--(two sisters, married to two brothers & their families), TAUFIELD, NASAR.

I have tried using first name only (Peter, Roland, & Elise) on both Ancestry & FamilySearch,& as well as with the above last names, along with West-Long Branch, NJ, but have not found anything.

Can anyone make any suggestions on how to pursue these unknown relatives?

Help with translation of letter written in Gothic German #translation

Jo Ann Goldwater

I would appreciate it if someone could translate this letter that is written in a Gothic German script that very few people are able to read today. The family was from Riga, and educated there in German. It is only one page that is from a letter written by my great uncle, Dr. Boris L Kagan (Abraham), a prominent physician in Russia, to his sisters. I already have had two letters translated, and since I can’t understand it, I am not sure where this page fits in, but it must belong with one of the letters. They contain very interesting information about social conditions and turmoil in Russia in 1904 and 5.

Thanks in advance for your help.

My great uncle and aunt were two of those 3000 Jews in 1900, and at least one of their two sons was born there.  They did emigrate to the US, and that son's brogue returned when he'd been celebrating too much.

In many places there is Late Registration
Of Birth whereby it is a parent who gives the details of the birth.  I have some over the years and they can be as much as 30 years after the actual birth.

Subject: [JewishGen.org] Subj: birth certificate on ViewMate with strange/suspicious date in Norfolk, Virginia #usa

I have posted a birth certificate from Norfolk, Virginia that shows the birth being in 1902, but the filing seems to be in 1918 (5/9/18). Did it take 16 years for the paperwork to be processed?. Also, the one signing in place of the doctor or midwife is the father. Anybody came across any similar situation? It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
