Re: Which is best free gedcom program online #general

FamilyTree Maker itself has a facility for exporting  a GedCom version off a tree. Click on File in the People mode,   chose Export File and then 'Export as GedCom file' is the bottom option in the dropdown menu - at least it is in my version of FamilyTree Maker.

Jewish School for Girls #usa

Debby Gincig Painter

My dad's Uncle was an Orthodox Rabbi. When he was in Los Angeles, he ran a school for Jewish girls that taught them how to be Orthodox good wives for Rabbis. Was this common in the 1950-60s? Has any one heard of such a school in Los Angeles during this time frame?

If interested in the journey to America, I suggest Mary Antin's 1912 book "The Promised Land."
Chapter VIII, The Exodus, describes the journey.

Re: Address of Bursa Zydowskich Wojennych #general

Krzysztof Witaszek

Hello Amnon,
There is one word missing in that title.
I guess it was: "Bursa Żydowskich sierot wojennych", (Lodging house for Jewish war orphans).
or eventualy "Bursa Żydowskich inwalidów wojennych" (lodging house for Jewish war-disabled".
There was an organization in Cracow for Jewish war orphans, war-disabled, war widows (Zjednoczenie Związków Żydowskich Inwalidów, wdów i sierót wojennych R. P  located at  ul. Skawińska 2 )
They could have  a lodging hause for kids or students.
There is an article in Polish  "Care for Jewish orphan kids in the Western Little Poland", where is mentioned a lodging hause for the Jewish orphans in Cracow (but no address)

link to the article

There is documentation for Jewish humanitary organizations in the Cracow State Archive and Warsaw State Archive (description in Polish)

(Netherlands) Dutch Court Rejects Return of Kandinsky Painting to Jewish Heirs #announcements #holocaust

Jan Meisels Allen

The Amsterdam District Court upheld a 2018 ruling by the Netherlands restitution committee and rejected a restitution case brought by the Jewish heirs that originally owned a painting by Wassily Kandinsky. The painting was bought by the city of Amsterdam at auction in 1940. Amsterdam District Court upheld a 2018 ruling by the Netherlands’ Restitutions Committee that the artwork titled “Painting With Houses,” which is in the collection of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, does not have to be returned to the Lewenstein family. Lawyers of the heirs said they will appeal. The painting is estimated to be worth €18m.

Legal counsel for the family said. .

“If this court decision is left unchallenged then Dutch restitution policy will effectively be non-existent, and important looted art in The Netherlands will likely never be restituted” said the legal counsel for the family.

The 2018 ruling said the painting was not stolen or confiscated before it was auctioned, but also stated that the sale “cannot on the one hand be considered in isolation from the Nazi regime, but on the other hand has to have been caused to an extent by the deteriorating financial circumstances” of the original owners before Nazi Germany invaded and occupied the Netherlands during World War II.

Lawyers for the heirs argued that the restitution committee included members “who apparently have a strong bias in favor of the Stedelijk Museum” and ignored other legal issues linked to the restitution of art sold by Jewish families before and during the war.

The court rejected the arguments.

Judith,

Our family had a cousin who passed on in a mental hospital in NY in 1933.  He was 24 years old.  The cause of death cannot be interpreted today as anything meaningful, and I've asked doctors about it.

Have you found him on the 1880 census?  Some of the 1880 census questions, if answered, may prove helpful, i.e.

Was, on the day of the enumerator's visit, the person was sick or disabled so as to be unable to attend to ordinary business or duties? If so, what was the sickness or disability?
Was the person blind?
Was the person deaf and dumb?
Was the person idiotic?
Was the person insane?
Was the person maimed, crippled, bedridden, or otherwise disabled?
Had the person attended school in the past year?
Can the person not read?
Can the person not write?

See the full list of column headings here:
https://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/index_of_questions/1880_1.html

And, the 1885 NJ State Census here:

Finding Vital Records in Monastyryska #records #ukraine

BECKER

On their arrival manifest my  great-grandparents list Monastyryska as their last place of residence.  I am having difficulty locating any kind of vital records for this town. Has anyone successfully found vital records for their family in Monastyryska and if so, I’d appreciate knowing where you found the them?"

Thank you,                                                                                                                                                                                                         Betsy Becker

I am a retired mental health counselor.  In the 1880s, psychiatry was in its infancy.  Freud was just beginning to expound on his theories and other major theorists of the early 20th century had yet to write much.

I had not heard of "terminal dementia" before this.  It sounds like a hodgepodge of non-diagnosis, essentially a catch-all term.  I would not put much faith in it, nor would I assume it is related to bipolar 1 or II or schizophrenia, which would normally present much differently from what is mentioned here.

Re: Wolk family #lithuania

David,

Did you see both pages of the manifest for Lena WOLK?  The person left behind info is on one page, and the person bound to info on another.

The info on the daughter is written over other words, so hard to see.  The initial words say "friends in Russia," then the info on the daughter is over it.  I had to enlarge the screen to try to read it.

The daughter's first name, I *think*, may be Yetta.  Surname definitely not WOLK, so must be the daughter's married name.  Surname *might* be something like SNELST or SRELSTU??

I thought the town name read Pilbesok Smalka, but looking at it with a magnifying glass (a tool us old genealogists will remember using when records were on microfilm!) I now think the second word *might* be Suwalki.

I found the manifest by using https://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
I searched for surname WOLK, and town name starting with letter P.

Hope this helps,

Sherri Bobish

According to my family lore, my grandfather and his uncle escaped Russia (from what is now Belarus) by hiding in a hay wagon.  However, there are no details as to how far that wagon carried them and how they then got to Hamburg, where they took a ship to America.  My grandfather was about 12 at the time.

Dear Aka Saba Iso,

My father was from Czernowitz, and a few years ago I found & joined an online group dedicated to that city & in turn, to some of the surrounding area.  They have a wealth of information and an interesting discussion group, too.  If you go to: www.ehpes.com you can follow the directions to join the group.  New people are always welcome!

You might use Steve Morse's website to search census records using first name only, if you are still looking. I saw him speak about how he did this in his presentation about searching for Renee Kaufman, which I think will be presented again in the next few days..

how to find death marriage and birth records for Munkacs, Hungary/Czechoslavakia #hungary #records

Paula & David

I am hoping to find some information about my GGM Fannie (Feiga?) Weisz, wife of Moshe Weisz,  who died  in childbirth or shortly thereafter around 1888-1891 in or near Munkacs.   I would like to find her death or marriage records (probably from a few years earlier).   Or possibly the birth record of my GM Sura about the same time.    Any suggestions on where to look to find these?   If they are not in English, any guidance in knowing if I have the right documents?

Thanks,   Paula Solomon
