Re: Young Galician boys forced labor for Russian army during FIRST World War #galicia

Sharon Taylor

Wow, Andrea, thank you for sharing your grandfather’s amazing story.

You mentioned that they returned to Tarnow in 1917, but couldn’t return home until 1918. Who was holding them? Was it the Austro-Hungarian authorities? I’ve read elsewhere that those who did make it back to Galicia were often detained by Austrian officials.

Does anyone else have insights as to what happened to the men and boys who were able to return to Galicia after they were taken by the Russians for forced labor during WWI?

Blog post on using Alex Krakovsky's Ukraine records #ukraine

Michael Moritz

I've written up in a blog post how I was able to use Alex Krakovsky's wonderful catalogue of Ukrainian Jewish scans freely available online to piece together a century of Russian Empire records on my family. There are many useful tips on how to utilize his resources, including steps to review these sources if you do not read or understand Russian. The blog post is available here:

if you go to the excerpt on the FB page, you’ll find at this at the bottom if my introduction:

You can find the book here:

(In this case, the Noyke excerpt is the second one down)

i generally don’t put in the paragraph that goes out on this email list because the point is to get people to go to the FB page

There is a famous Rev Moses Margoliouth who was born in Suwalki in NE Poland and came to Britain in 1837. He was an academic who converted to Christianity but in 1845 he gave a series of six lectures on the history of the Jews of England  at my father's old school in Liverpool. Most of his academic life seemed to be centred on Judaism and he spoke many languages. He ended up in Dublin, but he also had a famous nephew who was an academic at Oxford University who specialised in arabic topics.

Lower East Side, 1902 #usa #general

Scott D. Seligman

If you have female ancestors from Russia or Eastern Europe who were living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1902, there’s a good chance they participated in the community-wide kosher meat boycott in that year. When the price of kosher meat went up 50% in a matter of weeks, many Jewish women took to the streets and stopped buying meat entirely as a means to get prices down. The boycott lasted for weeks and was effective, although there was attendant violence. Scholars have known about this uprising for many years; it marked the dawn of female Jewish activism in America. But I have just published what I believe is the first book-length account of the events and their causes.

What I have learned about Jewish genealogical research over the years was immeasurably helpful in my research; in addition to searching English and Yiddish newspapers and immigration, census and vital records, I traced and contacted descendants of several of the leaders, including Sarah Zimmerman Edelson, Catherine Zeisler Schatzberg, Sara Zucker Cohn and Paulina Wachs Finkel, for stories and photographs. I’ll be giving virtual talks about the book beginning December 1. If you’d like to learn more about the boycott and see the schedule of book talks, please visit

Beth David like other cemetery databases is not always correct. I found a grave there and when I checked the online database this person was not there. I called their office and they did a card check, found him and added him into their database.

PS: You can do an online search by name and also by society. By society, all those listed will come up.

Did you call the cemetery office at Beth David? We found a number of relatives buried in NY cemeteries who did not show up in online searches.

There is also a King David(s) Benevolent Society at the Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn. I am familiar with this burial society. It was formerly the David Lodge #5, which was part of defunct fraternal organization, called Kesher Shel Barzel.

There is a small file, on the Davids Benevolent Society, on microfilm at the Center for Jewish History.

It it possible that they confused the name of the cemetery with the name of the burial society in whose section they are buried within a larger cemetery? My ancestors are buried in the Crown of David Sick and Benevolent Association section of Mount Zion Cemetery in Queens; it appears this burial society also purchased sections of other Queens cemeteries (Montefiore, Mount Carmel, etc.).
