From Lithuania to Brooklyn: Preserving a Family Collection & History

Speaker: Diana Korzenik

Brooklyn native Dr. Diana Korzenik first conceived of her book, Lithuania to Brooklyn, The Rabbi Daniel and Minnie Shapiro Family, as a way to preserve and document her collection of her maternal grandparents’ family objects now in New York’s Yeshiva University Museum. In that process she uncovered facts about the treasures  and the pains  of her grandparents' and parents’ lives, revelations that signal a departure from her family’s years of silence about the Old World, so familiar to many immigrant families.

Dr. Korzenik will first detail the process she followed in learning how to preserve her family collection. Then she will describe surprises in the stages of her construction of the family narrative. She begins with the family in Lithuania, fleshing out her grandfather’s Lithuanian rabbinic education, then turns toward rabbis’ debates about pros and cons of leaving, and challenges of getting to America. Once on New York’s Lower East Side and then in early 20th-century Brooklyn, both Rabbi and Rebbetzin Shapiro significantly contribute to Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish education and social services amidst the diverse pressures of Americanization.

Bonni-Dara Michaels, Collections Curator, Yeshiva University Museum, will speak briefly about the Museum’s acquisition policy and Dr. Korzenik’s donation of the Shapiro Family Collection.

Dr. Diana Korzenik, a writer and artist with paintings in museums as well as private collections, is professor emerita at Massachusetts College of Art. Her two prize-winning books, Drawn to Art: A Nineteenth-Century American Dream (1985) and Objects of American Art Education: Highlights from the Diana Korzenik Collection (2004), were based on collections she amassed for research, collections now, respectively, at the American Antiquarian Society and the Huntington Library. In addition to the Shapiro Family Collection, she created three additional research collections now held at the New England Historical Genealogical Society and two other institutions.

All are welcome; attendance is free, but registration is required:

Jewish family name Williams in NY State origin in the old coutry ( Suspect Suwalk/Suwalki #usa #russia #lithuania #poland

kosfiszer8@...

I need help with ancestors Williams that lived in Oneida county and also NY city, in NY. Some members are in the Acacia cemetery, Suwalki section in NY city. In particular, the Oneida county Williams' came to the USA around 1883-1885 being born in 1861-1864; Charles and Sophia/Sofia came as a couple and had 9 children, 6 of which survived by 1900. I can not find immigration and citizenship records to find out what may have been the family name in Europe as I suspect Williams was not originally their last name .

Sharon,

You may want to contact YIVO:

Sharon

My Kaplan family lived in Ariogala in the 1850s-1880s.  I visited in 2005 and saw the cemetery, which now only has a few visible stones.  You should look at the online information at:

Hi,
I had similar trouble finding an ancestor on a manifest. Someone on the list helped me find that he had taken a different route than other family members. Instead of going directly from Hamburg to New York, he went to England and then to Canada and then traveled on ground to New York. It hadn't occurred to me to check Canadian ports.

best,

Sounds fascinating and I'd love to read it, but the registration requirements of the platform academia.edu are much too intrusive. Foe example, it requires access to users' contacts. Why?

Re: Wolk family #lithuania

David Wolk

Many thanks for your response.  As mentioned in my search entry my grandfather's brother, Rabbi Louis Wolk, emigrated to South Africa during the first decade of the twentieth century and he lived and worked in a number of communities including a short stint in what was then the Belgium Congo.  I am aware that he and his wife had three children, a son Charles who died in his early thirties, and two daughters who eventually lived in Johannesburg.  If there was a 'David', I am unaware of it but it's possible.  Some years ago a friend mentioned a David Wolk who was a dentist in South Africa but I was unable to trace that information.  I do know that Louis's son also had a son, Jonathan, who eventually became a medical doctor but he is untraceable; he may not be alive.  Unfortunately I could not find Vivienne Wolk on the Geni site (likely the result of technology ignorance on my part) and the uct site did not list any Wolks.

I'd welcome any additional information or thoughts you may have on the Wolk family.

Rgds -   David Wolk

Ancestris is free, Java-based so it works on PCs but also Macs and Linux systems, and generates pure Gedcom so you remain in control of your data: http://ancestris.org

It's also very powerful and extensible.
