asked:  "What do readers believe is the best data base for early 1900 passenger records?"

Passenger records for which country?  If you can be more specific, than more precise answers can be given.

In general, I suggest www.familysearch.org which is a free site, and has a good selection of passenger manifest databases for The U.S.

Of course, www.stevemorse.org is a wonderful resource.

I believe the Shul was B'nai David at 1271 Woods Street. It was at that location from 1896 to around 1917. I don't know if that fits your time when your grandparents lived there.
It would have been about a 25 minute walk (1.3 miles) from Grand and Damen.

I can provide you more info if you email me directly at karsen.mike@...

Cippe Sonnenschein #ukraine

Carol Jean Weightman

This is the Birth Registration of my grandmother Cippe.

It took me a long time to find it. Always said to have been born on 2 April 1874 in Czernowitz, Cippe’s Birth Registration is in the 1895 Czernowitz Births Volume.

Cippe's parents were Pessie Golde Strudler and Fischel Sonnenschein.

The marriage of Pessie and Fischel was registered with the civil authorities in Czernowitz in 1891. Cippe and her siblings were listed on the 1891 Marriage Registration.

I do not understand the significance of Oktober 1895 which I can see in the Anmerkung column of this Birth Registration.

It is possible that Cippe was born in Stryj and that her birth had been registered there. But I see no reference to Stryj in the Anmerkung on the Birth Registration or on the 1891 Marriage Registration.

It is also possible that a marriage was planned for Cippe to take place in Lviv. There is a photograph of her taken in a studio in Lviv. Is 1895 possibly a reference to this?

I would appreciate a translation of the comments which are across the three columns, as well as any thoughts, interpretations, understanding as to why Cippe’s 1874 birth is in the 1895 register.

Thank you for your help.
Carol

Re: Ester Fanya Fomin family from Vitebsk, Belarus and then Riga, Latvia #belarus #latvia

I have a couple of suggestions for Latvian records.

The following link takes you to a database that holds the translations of some of the rabbinate records from the Latvian State Archices. http://usdine.free.fr/thexrigaxvitalxrecords.html.

Try the Latvian State Archives.  The rabbinate records are sometimes easy to browse because the entries are in the Roman alphabet and the names read very similarly to English.  Sarah is Sarah is Sara is Sora.  Same for David or Isaac.  The entries are also there in block scripts (I believe Hebrew but possibly Yiddish).

Antra Celmina  <admin=celmina.com@...>, a Canadian of Latvian descent, offers a course in how to maneuver the Latvian archives.  First course is free.  After that the costs are fairly minimal.

The Latvian archives are on Ancestry but not searchable.  You need to browse.

I share this because I found my grandfather's brother's birth and circumcision record after searching for years and from that record uncovered my great grandfather's place of registration in the Russian Empire and now have more places to search.  Everybody seems to concentrate on Poland, Ukraine, Belarus.  I assume that is a matter of numbers.  Latvia was a much smaller Jewish community.  But there are records.

Wedding Announcement errors.. question #general

Barry Yunes

Has anyone experienced information from a wedding announcement that is in error? I was just wondering if this happens to others at all? In the Boston Globe my Grandfather, Louis Yunes wedding announcement from 1908 stated that the best man was "Frank Yunes, one of the Groom's brothers". I was told he was an only child and this is the first I had heard of this. I believe he could be a first cousin but not a brother. Just wondering if anyone else had run into this with a wedding announcement? If I could trace the family name to a revision list from Boguslov, Russia/Lithuania then I might be able to resolve this, but so far no luck doing that either. Thanks for any help or responses.

Re: Researching meaning of surname from Ukraine #ukraine #names

Dave Lewak

Hi Denise,
this is something of a stretch, but my great-grandparents' surname was Meshurisman, they came from Balta, and had connections in Odessa and Kishinev.  My grandfather changed the surname to Mishuris, and I've seen the original surname spelled Meschurisman, Mishurisman, and many other variations.

Could Meschmar be a shortened form of Meschurisman?

I believe the original meaning of Meshurisman is something like "servant", perhaps someone's occupation.

Mishuris, Toberman, Polisar, Flickstein from Balta Ukraine;
Lewak, Goldberg, Kier, Flaksman, Dwinsky from Drohiczyn, Kobrin and Chomsk in Belarus.
Winzelberg, Wertheim(er), Silberstein from Czchow, Poland;
Lieberman, Finkelstein from
Balbieriskis, Lithuania;

Pablo,
I think it is important to know the meaning of these names... you probably know that.
If you look into A.Beider's Encyclopedia you find the surnames (this is how the names were pronounced.. not real spelling):
KHAMUDIS  was popular in Kishinev, Bendery, Akkerman and Taurida (Crimea)
KHAMUDES was popluar in Minsk and Soroki
KHOMUDIS was popular in Akkerman

and the surname LEBEDINSIKIY was popular in many places mostly what is now Ukraine.

All the best,
Shabbat Shalom,
Yefim Kogan

I'm not sure. I'm at the beginning of the story. We know that Harry was born in Lida (now Belorus) and that he emigrated with his parents Abraham/Avigdor and Frume (Rozenburg) to London as a boy. We have a picture of him aged say 5 at a primary school. After serving in the Jewish Legion he emigrated to Montreal where my father was born. He must have had brothers and sisters that he left behind in London. So it would be interesting to discuss further.

best regards

Nicholas

It would be helpful if you stated specifically what you are looking for.  Also, approximately when was your gf born?  What was the name of his father and his second wife?  Where might the family have lived?  The more information you can provide, the easier it will be to help.

Need Help Interpreting Ellis Island Manifest #records

MarkWeinberg18@...

I would appreciate help in interpreting the writing on my grandmother's Ellis Island manifest.   I am interested in lines 10 to 13, Gitel Malke WEINBERG and children Neche, Freida Taube, and Moshe.

Questions:
- Columns 10,11 page 1; 20, page 2:  I believe that the town she was from, and where she was born, is Dobrzyn, Plock Gubernia.  Is this correct?  Unfortunately, there are two Dobrzyns in Plock: Golub-Dobrzyn and Dobrzyn nad Wisla.
- Column 11, page 1: What is her mother's name?  I believe the surname is GARTNER, but can't determine the first name at all.  This woman would be my great-grandmother.
- Column 18, page 2: What is the name of her husband?  I believe it says Itzig WEINBERG.  Is this true?  He would be my grandfather and I know that his name was Isaac/Yitzchak.  I also know that Itzig is Yiddish for that.

Thanks very much.

Errol Schneegurt

Looking for divorce records from the Poviat court in Lviv in 1921.When my Grandfather remarried, he needed to prove the divorce from his first wife, my grandmother. Rab: Ziff attested to the divorce Bann and that the record was in the Poviat court, located, I am assuming this to be a file number, 15.15[16]  i21.

How would I be able to geta copy of this record? This is my last outstanding item.

Dear Nicholas,
I've done a good deal of research on the Jewish Legion/Royal Fusiliers.  I found your grandfather's listing in the British medal rolls and am attaching it.  If you'd like more information about the group just let me know. Happy to help.

My best,

Re: Genealogy Software For Family Trees #general

Brother's Keeper permits names in Hebrew.
I know Hebrew can be used in comments but have not tried
using Hebrew dates in the date field.

Hebrew in GED files can be loaded into Agelong Tree. I do
not use Agelong Tree to record information, only to
produce tree diagram and Hebrew prints fine.

If you want Hebrew windows as titles, pull-downs
names of reports, options, etc. BK does have a number
of other languages, but not Hebrew.

If you're in Israel, send me a note and I can speak with you by phone.

I am trying to trace Hedwig Kassel (née May) who was born in Osthofen, Worms, Germany (in, I imagine, the 1890s) and her daughters Sophie Kassel and Alice Kassel. I am fairly sure that they escaped to Uruguay in the late 1930s. I am especially interested in what became of the family in Uruguay.

Thank you!
