Re: 1899 Psychiatric Diagnosis #records #usa

jbonline1111@...

I am a retired mental health counselor.  In the 1880s, psychiatry was in its infancy.  Freud was just beginning to expound on his theories and other major theorists of the early 20th century had yet to write much.

I had not heard of "terminal dementia" before this.  It sounds like a hodgepodge of non-diagnosis, essentially a catch-all term.  I would not put much faith in it, nor would I assume it is related to bipolar 1 or II or schizophrenia, which would normally present much differently from what is mentioned here.

David,

Did you see both pages of the manifest for Lena WOLK?  The person left behind info is on one page, and the person bound to info on another.

The info on the daughter is written over other words, so hard to see.  The initial words say "friends in Russia," then the info on the daughter is over it.  I had to enlarge the screen to try to read it.

The daughter's first name, I *think*, may be Yetta.  Surname definitely not WOLK, so must be the daughter's married name.  Surname *might* be something like SNELST or SRELSTU??

I thought the town name read Pilbesok Smalka, but looking at it with a magnifying glass (a tool us old genealogists will remember using when records were on microfilm!) I now think the second word *might* be Suwalki.

I found the manifest by using https://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
I searched for surname WOLK, and town name starting with letter P.

Hope this helps,

Sherri Bobish

According to my family lore, my grandfather and his uncle escaped Russia (from what is now Belarus) by hiding in a hay wagon.  However, there are no details as to how far that wagon carried them and how they then got to Hamburg, where they took a ship to America.  My grandfather was about 12 at the time.

Dear Aka Saba Iso,

My father was from Czernowitz, and a few years ago I found & joined an online group dedicated to that city & in turn, to some of the surrounding area.  They have a wealth of information and an interesting discussion group, too.  If you go to: www.ehpes.com you can follow the directions to join the group.  New people are always welcome!

You might use Steve Morse's website to search census records using first name only, if you are still looking. I saw him speak about how he did this in his presentation about searching for Renee Kaufman, which I think will be presented again in the next few days..

how to find death marriage and birth records for Munkacs, Hungary/Czechoslavakia #hungary #records

Paula & David

I am hoping to find some information about my GGM Fannie (Feiga?) Weisz, wife of Moshe Weisz,  who died  in childbirth or shortly thereafter around 1888-1891 in or near Munkacs.   I would like to find her death or marriage records (probably from a few years earlier).   Or possibly the birth record of my GM Sura about the same time.    Any suggestions on where to look to find these?   If they are not in English, any guidance in knowing if I have the right documents?

Thanks,   Paula Solomon

My grandparents married in Sarreguemines Synagogue in France in 1927.

Under French civil law at that time, were they also required to have a civil marriage?

If yes, then I believe that happened in Strasbourg.

Can I please receive advice on how to obtain a copy of their civil marriage record (email, post??)

Thanks,

I know where the graves of Charles (died in 1941) and Sophia Williams (died in 1949) are in Utica, NY. It is an old and closed cemetery that belongs to Congregation Zvi Jacob between Waverly Pl and Watson Pl near highway 5. I may need a volunteer to take pictures when I contact the synagogue and if I get permission to do so. Thank you for your help in advance.

After I sent my last message, I found a Peter Goldberg (1905-1982) in a family tree on Ancestry.  His wife's name was Elise, and they had three children (names are private).  They are buried in Oceanport, Monmouth County, NJ.  Peter's mother was Mildred (Millie) Levine Goldberg, born 1881.

Hope this helps.

Hershele Kurlap, the title character in this excerpt from the Yizkor book of Wyszków, Poland, was a fisherman and considered the Rebbe of the fish market. A tradition he clung to with fervor was never having a Sabbath meal without a guest. One Sabbath, he found himself without a guest and this is the story of how he scoured the shtetl to fulfill the commandment to find one.

You could try city directories from the period, though it would require browsing through them to see if you can locate a Peter with an Elise, or a Roland, etc.  I see that the Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center at the Newark Public Library in NJ has copies of city directories for West Long Branch for the period 1961-1965.  See https://npl.org/collections-services/charles-f-cummings-new-jersey-information-center/guide-to-nj-city-directories/  The NY Public Library also has Monmouth County white pages from that time period.

Unfortunately, none of these directories appear to be accessible online.

Try this site for Czernowitz https://czernowitz.geneasearch.net/index.php.
If you'll find a record, you can order a copy of the original.
For Radautz use this site http://czernowitz.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-radautz-vital-records-index.html. You may also obtain a copy of the original document.
In order to get a meaningful result, use the correct spelling of the name (like Shechter or Shachter).

Let's see if Peter was a nephew and had children in 1963, he may have been born in the 30's so he was probably not married yet.  And city directories usually have husband and wife but no children.  Have you tried searching for a city directory in NJ in the 1960's with a Peter and Elise?  And have you used wild cards in your search so R*chman.  Now if you are trying to find him in the 1940 census I would use Peter R*chman and living in NJ.
