A certain death record >from October, 1989 in Ohio has been brought to my

1929-1932 U.S.A. quota system question. #general

Mark London <mrl@...>

Hi - I have a question about the immigration quota system that was in place
between 1929 and 1932.

According to family history, my wife had a relative who got married in Poland
in 1929. Within less than a month, the husband immigrated to America by
himself. His father and sister already were living there. But he wife had to
wait 3 years, supposedly because of the the quota system. Her husband had to
prove that he had a job and could support her, before she could come over.

However, a son of theirs who is still alive, says that she could have
immigrated very quickly herself if she wasn't married, as she had an older
brother and sister in America, that could have vouched for her (they had
arrived a decade beforehand).

Were the quota system rules written in a way, that the husband's status
trumped her status with her siblings? How long did he need to have a job,
before she could apply to immigrate? And if they have known about the quota
system, wouldn't they have both immigrated separately, before getting
married? Any guesses anyone?

Maybe they thought that the husband would get work quicker than he did. He
had to learn English first (although ironically, he ended up getting a job
in a vacation area, **because** of the fact that he could speak Yiddish and
Polish).

Thanks for your help.

Check the Jewishgen Discussion Group - Group Message Archives. Search:
Ferramonti for 10 messages 1997-2010. Ferramonti is near town of Tarsia in
Calabria. I posted names & descriptions of useful books, Jewish names >from
cemetery wall & few graves. Dr. Mario Rende of Perugia Italy has done
extensive work, got d. certs, a few b. & m. certs >from town hall. He also
cleaned graves & got records & photos >from cemetery in nearby Cosenza. I
highly recommend his book as well as ones by Capogreco, Bierman (lots
names, 1984 reunion in Israel) & Bettina (church in Campagna housed Jews,
mentioned few who visited relatives in Ferramonti). Rende & Capogreco books
are in Italian but easy to read with help of dictionary. Some photos in all
books.

Jewishgen also has under their Holocaust Database: Rhodes to Ferramonti. Don't
think you can search it without exact spelling of name. Many names are in
Bierman book & Anna Pizzuti website. Best to look at full list on Anna P's
site as names are spelled differently ie. Heinrich could be Henry or Enrico.
I found person buried in Tarsia, not listed as being there but informant on
d. cert was dau, she & mother are on Anna P's list.
Have to work back & forth between all books & records to get full picture.
As usual, many misspelled first & last names as person of one nationality
writing name of a different nationality.

Ferramonti has museum & original buildings still stand. Goggle
"fondazioneferramonti" for several citations about museum, programs etc.
info@fondazioneferramonti.it Also Goggle "ferramonti" to links to Yad Yashem
& much more.

Assistance in Identifying a London Street #unitedkingdom

Eric Ellman

Friends:

I could use some help in identifying a street in London >from a
handwritten school register.

I am looking at a book for students admitted to and discharged >from the
Chicksand Street School, Tower Hamlets. According to the register,
Janie Cohen (born 22 June 1894) was admitted on 7 September 1899 and
discharged on 9 January 1900.

I am having a hard time deciphering the handwritten address of the
family as provided by Janie's father, Israel Cohen. The handwriting
clearly says house number 49 and room (I assume apartment) 14. I
cannot make out the name of the street.

I've posted a vital record in Polish for which I need a translation.
It is on ViewMate at the following address ...
