Genealogy Study & Survey #general

Eileen Polakoff <eileenpolakoff@...>

As genealogists and family historians, you may be interested in
participating in the following study. I just did it and it did take 20
minutes or so but I think it's important for us to express our reasons for
genealogy in such a format. If interested or if you have questions, please
visit the web site listed < http://psych.fullerton.edu/genealogy > for
further information.

The Fullerton Genealogy Study
A Master's Thesis Project by Pamela Drake
California State University, Fullerton

Nearly 60% of U.S. residents participate in some genealogical activities.
Yet there is sparse information about the millions of people involved in
this rewarding hobby and what needs are met by the pursuit of one's
ancestors. A thesis project designed to address these questions is being
conducted at California State University Fullerton. See the survey at:

Re: NICANOR #general

Michele Krakowski <michele.krakowski@...>

I would just add an etymological explanation : in ancient Greek,
"nikao" means " to win",and "aner/ andros" means " man, male" So it could
be translated as : victorious man or man who causes victory.
Michele Krakowski

le 22/03/01 4:23, Robert Israel israel@math.ubc.ca a crit:

One of the first Nicanors that I could find mention of was Aristotle's
adopted son and an associate of Alexander the Great. The name seems to
have become popular among the Seleucids, and the first mention I could
find connected with the Jews was the Seleucid general Nicanor, sent by
Demetrius I to fight the Maccabees shortly after the events celebrated
in Chanukah.

I Maccabees 7:26: Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honourable
princes, a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel, with commandment to
destroy the people.

Judah HaMaccabee's victory over this Nicanor used to be celebrated in
Israel as "Nicanor Day" on the 13th of Adar.

Nowadays I think the main use of Nicanor as a first name is among
non-Jewish Spanish-speaking people, e.g the Chilean poet Nicanor Parra.
They take the name >from Saint Nicanor of Cyprus, I think.

I am interested in finding out what the name Amon means?
It is the name of a king of Judah (see 2 Kings 21:18-26).
If it's >from Hebrew, it means "establish, confirm, support" -
the same root as Amen that we use in praying. But it's also
the name of one of the main Egyptian gods. Dominic Rudman,
Biblica 81 (2000) 403-405, suggests that Amon's father Manasseh
gave him this name to commemorate the capture of the Egyptian
city of Thebes (No-Amon in Hebrew) by the Assyrians. See

ZATURENSKY and SEID families from Nesvizh, Belarus #general

MsDespina@...

I am researching the Zaturensky family of Nesvizh, Belarus. I am a
descendent of Schmuel and Molka Zaturensky. Zaturensk was changed to Seid
when the family emigrated. The family settled in New York, Chicago, and
Madison, WI. I would appreciate any information you have about these
families. I am familiar with the Nesvizh web site.

Please release immediately.

Well folks.....we've been hearing complaints about this for a long time.
AOL has never been responsive to JewishGen's pleas for attention to this
