JRI-Poland announces the 'Great Galician Indexing Race'
#general
Galician researchers have been waiting for news of the next phase
of the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland / AGAD Archives project. JRI-Poland is pleased to make that announcement now but it may not be what you were expecting! With the enthusiastic support of the AGAD Archives branch of the Polish State Archives, JRI-Poland is launching a unique competition, the 'Great Galician Indexing Race.' First, some background: There are 2010 Jewish vital record registers for 90 towns in the AGAD Archives. The indexing of the records for the eleven towns in Phase 1 (Tarnopol Area) is expected to be complete by the end of April 2001. Please note that these 90 towns include 87 towns in Eastern Galicia (curently Ukraine), three Galician towns currently in Poland (Lubycza Krolewska, Oleszyce, and Wielkie Oczy) and one Ukrainian town outside of the Galician borders (Torchin). Initially, the plan was to index the records on an area by area basis. However, many researchers have approached JRI-Poland with a specific interest in one or more towns and some have volunteered to become Town Leaders, to lead the project to index their town's records. In addition, past experience indicates that there will be towns for which there will be fewer researchers to support the indexing efforts, and therefore, under 'area by area' indexing, these ecords would be left hanging, perhaps for an extended time. Then, early in January it was learned that AGAD had taken possession of 65 additional registers (>from the Warsaw Civil Records Office.) Not only are there later records for 39 towns (see updated table of available records), but for the first time, there are records for the towns of Zavalov (Zawalow) and Ivano Frankovo (Janow). Under the area by area plan, indexing of new registers for completed areas could be indefinitely delayed. As a result, JRI-Poland sought to develop a system to simplify and expedite the entire AGAD archives project - the 'Great Galician Indexing Race.' The goal of the Great Galician Indexing Competition is to challenge researchers to ensure that their town's records are indexed as soon as possible. It's simple... the race is to get your town on the indexing schedule. Your town will be added as soon as a certain goal has been reached. Full details of the project - and how you can help achieve this goal -- are available on the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland web site at: www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/ Click on the rotating "new" icon "Indexing Galician Records..." The AGAD Archives is participating by preparing inventories as quickly as possible. As of March 5th, inventories have been completed for 33 of the 90 towns (includes the 11 towns in Area 1 - Tarnopol) and the years and the number of records available for indexing is detailed on the JRI-Poland web site at: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/galicia/index.htm JRI-Poland is pleased to announce that Mark Halpern, Archive Coordinator for the initial AGAD project (Tarnopol area #1) has agreed to take on the major task of coordinating the Phase 2 "Great Galician Indexing Race." If you want to help JRI-Poland get the records for your town indexed, read all about the role of Town Leader at: < http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/psa/psastat.htm> and then contact Mark Halpern at Willie46@aol.com. Your name and email address will be inserted beside the Town Name in the table linked to the AGAD Archives page on the JRI-Poland web site: www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/agad To stay up to do date on the AGAD project for Galician records as well as the indexing of records >from towns in current-day Poland, subscribe to the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland mailing list at: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/join.htm Jewish Records Indexing - Poland is an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) U.S. organization and is hosted by JewishGen. "Neighbors , the destruction of a Jewish Community" now- available
#yiddish
Carol Skydell <cskydell@...>
The book you've been hearing about, reading about, talking about
....originally published in Polish, soon to be released in English, is now available on the JewishGenMALL at a discounted pre-publication price of $18.95 plus shipping and handling. Jan Gross' "Neighbors", is the chilling tale of one summer day in 1941 when half the Polish town of Jedwabne murdered the other half. 1,600 Jewish men, women and children murdered not by the Nazis as many believed, (and as many would have the world continue to believe) but by their Polish neighbors who destroyed all but seven of the town's Jews. The author puts together a shocking and brutal story >from eyewitness accounts remembered well by locals but forgotten by history. His investigation reads like a detective story, putting truth to the often told lie. "Neighbors, the Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne" will be available in April, but because of expected interest the JewishGenMALL is accepting advance orders. Please visit http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgenmall/ and find "Neighbors" easily by clicking on the New Items button. If you click on the title you can read more about the book, and if you are ready to place your order click on the Add button to put it into your shopping cart. New Family Branch: Aliza WEINER + Baruch CAPLAN
#latvia
Judith27
EPITHALAMION 2001/5761
Truly love's as easy as A, B, C. Aliza (Weiner) and Baruch Caplan ~ Kind Kallah and handsome Hassan to be ~ will wed March twenty-second, per God's plan. All their many dear kith and kin world-wide are cordially invited to attend as the Ketubah's read, a tie sanctified and glad families, 'neath the Chuppah blend. Now's HaKol Sharir v'Kayam! Hurrah! As the wise Hebrew adage testifies Shenichnas Adar Marbim b'Simcha When Adar arrives, joy sure multiplies. How will the novel of their lives unfold as they create a Torah-true household?!?!? ~~ Shulamith Surnamer 3/7/01 Dear LitvakSIGdom, Since the groom-to-be, Baruch Caplan, is my son, for the CAPLAN or really the CAPLAN-KLOMPUS-NACHUMOVITZ-LEPAR-BERMAN+LANGER-WEBER-BALINKY-SURNAMER side, I happily have sufficient data on those lines. It's starting on the genealogy of the bride's side, the WEINER-HIRSCH +LEVINE-FEINSTEIN families that I would appreciate assistance with!! My starting clues: Fred LEVINE married Jean FEINSTEIN and had two daughters, Sandra and Judith. They lived in the Bronx. Fred had a sister Cecilia, and a mother named Annie (possibly with a maiden name of BLUM). Elias (Eliyahu) WEINER married Martha HIRSCH and they had two children, Moti (Mordechai) and Miriam. The family lived in Cluj, Romania, and then moved to Israel. The WEINER family may have originally been >from Poland. Todah Rabah in advance for all clues, leads, and suggestions. Happy Purim!! Judi Langer-Surnamer Caplan <judith27@aol.com> Long Beach, NY Moderator Note: Mazeltov to all. May you have a wonderful simcha.

Article on Herman SPERTUS
#general
steven weiss <szome@...>
The current issue of "Chicago Jewish News" has a remarkable article on
Herman SPERTUS who is celebrating his 100th birthday on March 10, 2001. Mr. Spertus is an outstanding philanthropist and famous collector of Judaica. Mr. Spertus was born in Lubech, Ukraine and moved with his family to Chernigov after the Russian revolution. The article describes in detail the harrowing escape >from Russia which Herman and his brother Maurice made in 1922. I recommend this article to all Jewish genealogists. Hyla Fox <gohyla@...>
I am looking for information on the TZIMMERMAN family who lived in
Khoschevato, in the Podolia Gubernia, Kirovograd Oblast, in the Ukraine from about 1880 to approximately 1920, although a few may havesurvivied there until the l970s. Family lore has it that at least two Tzimmerman men were Rabbis. A descendant, also a Rabbi, is thought to have moved to British Columbia. I'm looking for any info--including photographs of the village/shops/people/buildings-- or any of the family members. Also, looking for MYASKOFZY family members, >from Peschana, Ukraine, Vinnitsa Oblast, 1880s to about 1920s. Any information on these families would be most appreciated. Of course, I'm only to happy to share my material. Hyla Fox, descendant of both families. MODERATOR NOTE: The best way to make connections with others searching the same surnames and/or ancestral towns is to register your names and towns in the Jewish Genealogy Family Finder (JGFF) at <http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/jgffweb.htm>.
