Ferdinand & Isabella #general

Charles Salama <salamax3@...>

A friend recently attended a lecture at Mar-a-lago in Florida, when the
author (a descendant of Ferdinand & Isabella) discussed a book which he
has written based on family papers which still exist. Apparently, both
of these monarchs had jewish ancestors.

Unfortunately, my friend could not remember the title or the name of the
author!! I am trying to trace this book and wonder if anyone out there
has heard of it. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Synagogues in South Africa #general

Roger Harris <rh@...>

Southern Africa Jewish Genealogy
http://www.jewishgen.org/Safrica/index.htm

A list of synagogues in South Africa is on the SAJG web-site at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Safrica/synagogues/index.htm

The intention behind the list has two parts. Firstly, to present a listing
of as many of the functioning and defunct synagogues and Jewish houses of
prayer in South Africa as possible. It was in these Batei Tefilah that
births, marriages and deaths were recorded and solemnised.

Secondly, to add to the listing whatever factual or anecdotal details might
become available so as to build a genealogical resource.

Re: Birth certificate #galicia

MMBegun@...

Responding to Dorothy Schaefer --

It's very possible your father's name was misspelled on his birth
certificate. Depending on date of birth, a midwife may have filled out the
birth certificate and may not have gotten the name right. I've seen several
examples of this.

In the case of my mother and each of her siblings, the midwife (and my
grandparents as well at that time) was barely literate in English.
Consequently she used her idea of phonetic spelling. It was in her
handwriting, which was truly bad.

If my mother hadn't already gotten her official birth certificate >from the
NY records office, I'm certain I'd never have found it. She was listed as
Polina Baffler. Real name: Pauline Befeler.

The error caused her some problems when it was time to apply for social
security -- had to prove she was the same person!

Best advice -- go to the archives and do the search yourself, or if that's
not possible, try to find a trusted friend or professional researcher to
find it for you.

On the tombstone of my great uncle Abraham Harris is a Mogen Dovid and in

Re: Difference between Databases #general

New York County is Manhattan. Kings County is Brooklyn. So the databases
are not the same. If your ancestor was Sam Cohen then you probably have 2
Sam Cohens. Or it may be that Sam filed his Declaration of Intent in
Manhattan and his Petition for Naturalization in Brooklyn.

Why not get both records and see what is going on?
