French Court Orders Return of Art to Jewish Heirs #announcements #france #holocaust

Jan Meisels Allen

A French Court of Appeals ordered France to return three landscapes by André Derain art to the grandchildren of Jewish art dealer René Gimpel, who died in a concentration camp in 1945.  The works in question are Paysage à Cassis and Le Moulin, held at the Modern Art Museum in Troyes, and Pinède, Cassis at the Musée Cantini in Marseille.  Rene Gimpel, who was denounced by a rival dealer after joining the resistance against Nazi occupation and France’s collaborationist Vichy government.

The Appeals Court overturned a lower court’s judgement stating there were enough “serious, precise and concordant clues” that the paintings were looted in 1942, under German Occupation.  As reported in the Art Newspaper, Wednesday’s judgement confirms that, even if René Gimpel was a dealer and sold the paintings, he was forced to do so for his survival as a member of the Resistance in hiding on the French Riviera.  The court did not accept the French culture ministry’s counter-argument that the restitutions should be denied due to the “current uncertainty” surrounding the exact dates and conditions of the sales. The Gimpel family should not have to produce “impossible evidence” of sales that the dealer had to conceal, the court said.

France also refused to hand back the Derain paintings because the country’s public collections are considered sacrosanct. The museums of Troyes and Marseilles claimed they had acquired the landscapes in good faith after the war, but failed to produce any research of provenance. By contrast, the court praised the Gimpel family for undertaking “considerable historical research” which led to the discovery of “new elements” contributing to its decision.

This judgement has important precedent as France has refused to turn over other art belonging to Jewish Heirs that were taken during World War ll, most notably 16 paintings, currently held in the Musée du Louvre and Musée d’Orsay in Paris and museums in Troyes and Nice, which were auctioned in 1942 from the collection of Armand Isaac Dorville. Twelve were bought directly by the Louvre’s head curator at the sale in Nice while the rest were purchased after the war.  A 2018 report criticized France’s government “weak responses and inaction” on restitution of Nazi—looted art (https://www.theartnewspaper.com/news/france-must-catch-up-fast-in-return-of-nazi-era-loot).

René Albert Gimpel was a prominent French art dealer of Alsatian Jewish descent who died in 1945 in Neuengamme concentration camp, near Hamburg, Germany. Friend and patron of living artists and collectors, he was the son of a picture dealer and the brother-in-law of Sir Joseph Duveen.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Gimpel)

missing grave #poland

Paul Silverstone

When my grandparents visited their hometown Makow Mazowiecki in Poland
in 1927 they photographed his mother's grave. Written on the photo is
Warsaw in Yiddish. A second photo shows the grave apparently after the
war. Search of Warsaw cemeteries does not reveal this gravestone.
Where could it be? Chaya Leah Chrzan died 12 Sep 1909. The 1927
photo shows a rather new-looking stone.

I wish there was a way to sort all of Alex K's postings in chronological order - but unfortunately no.  What you can do is if there is a particular wiki page or pages of interest to you containing your towns and you wish to keep current - there is a way to get notified anytime he posts a new item - in the upper right corner of the wiki page you can log in (or create an account with wiki and then log in) and once logged in you can sign up for updates if there is a new item

Looking for FAJWEL / TAJFEL / BEKERKUNST / KNASTER families from Ozorkow / Leczyca / Kutno / Warsaw #poland #general

Dominique MERLET

Hi,
My grandmother Estera Chana GERSZONOWICZ, born KOSOWSKA had Ludka FAJWEL (03-05-1875 Ozorkow) as her mother. The identity of Ludka's father is not known. Her mother was BEKERKUNST Itta (born around 1842 and died on 08-03-1916 in Ozorkow). Itta apparently had other children whose surname is not FAJWEL, but TAJFEL: TAJFEL Chaim (1885 Ozrokow), TAJFEL Michal Jakub (1886 Ozorkow) and TAJFEL Golda Dworja (1890 Ozorkow). For these other children, the identity of the father is not known either...
The parents of Itta BEKERKUNST were Icek BEKERKUNST and Estera born KNASTER in 1822 and died on 11-02-1902 in Ozorkow. Estera's parents were KNASTER Hersz and Fajga (maiden name unknown). They must have been born in the 1800's. There are many KNASTERs in the town of Kutno (near Ozorkow) and also in the city of Warsaw. But I don't find the common point...
Thanks for your help !

Re: Jacobstadt, Latvia 1958 Revision List #latvia

Arlene Beare

Ava
I think there is a typo and you mean 1858.
Revision Lists are like our Census Returns and were taken in different years,   The Archives have them from 1799 -1858. There are some additional lists up to 1913. The last important one was the 1858.list.
Early Revision Lists may not have surnames  and were compiled in German.   In rare case they are in Russian. Russian became the official state language in 1892.  Most lists are from the 8th Revision in 1834. Lists for Jekabpils are incomplete.  Complete  1834 lists exist  for Jelgava,Liepaja and Tukums.
I have details of Archival Holdings in my  "Book a Guide to Jewish Genealogy in Latvia and Estonia"  which can be downloaded as an Ebook from the JGSGB.org.uk   site. It is very cheap and all proceeds go to  the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain.    https://shop.jgsgb.org.uk/catalog/downloads
We also have a list of the Holdings in Archives on our Latvia SIG page where you can see what records they have and what years are missing.

This Week's Yizkor book excerpt (celebrating Succoth) on the JewishGen Facebook page #yizkorbooks #belarus

Bruce Drake

After the solemnity of the Days of Awe comes the joyous celebration of Succoth which starts this evening. Here are two Yizkor book excerpts to help you get in the mood. “Sukkos and Simkhas Torah” from the book of Dokshytsy, Belarus sets the stage with the building of the sukkah, after which came the completion of the yearly cycle of reading of the Torah in synagogue on Simkhas Toyre. “All of the knots left their faces, their eyes were bright, and there was joy and merriment. Hassidic melodies, dances, a good glass of spirits - - were not lacking on that day. Even people who were respected middle class citizens during the year allowed themselves certain wiles on that day.”
“An Ethrog for Succoth” from the book of Navahrudak, also in Belarus, begins with the arrival in town of Dvoire. She had come to select from him an eshrog (a yellow-skinned citrus fruit. She went to the rabbi’s home and gifted him a bag of flour, potatoes and a clucking chicken. The rabbi opened a box of ethrogs for her and let her do the choosing…She did not dwell and took home the perfect ethrog.” This was during a time of worry and fear and want. During the First World War there was hunger in town and without the help of Dvoire and generosity of her husband, the flour miller, things would have been desperate. Some thought that no one should risk their lives to travel for an eshrog. But on the last day before Succoth, Dvoire arrives “dishevelled and sweaty” but with her eyes shining. She had brought the perfect eshrog.

Need help, please, dating a Warsaw and a Liverpool studio photo of my great-grandmother #poland #unitedkingdom #photographs

Barry Clarke

I have two undated formal studio photos of my great-grandmother, one taken in Warsaw and one in Liverpool. I am struggling to make sense of them from the age she looks in them vis a vis when I understood her to have been in Poland and in the UK. I need some outside opinions as to which years each photo may have been taken. Maybe someone can judge by the clothes she is wearing? She was born 1862/1863. I have attached the photos, but I don't know how they will appear in this format, so please email me at bbclarke98@... if you need to see a full-size attachment, and I will email it to you.

Re: Records for Aliens Held for Special Inquiry - 305-Cert #general #usa

Susan&David

Cert 305 is, most likely, related to the requirement to have a bond of financial support from a friend or family member if the immigrant was denied admission for LPC (Likely Public Charge)   Abraham was held for tn days before the issue was resolved in his favor.

This is from:  https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/our-history/history-office-and-library/our-history/public-charge-provisions-of-immigration-law-a-brief-historical-background#_ftnref21

"Aliens held as inadmissible by the BSI could appeal the decision to Immigration Service Headquarters. A majority of immigrants who appealed the BSI decision were admitted on appeal. In many of these cases the Immigration Service required a bond of financial support from  a friend or family member as a condition of admission."

Re: Lacova in Lithuania #lithuania

Hi Jeremy

There are several places called Lubove or Lubowe in 1) the parts of Suwalki gubernia in NE Poland that went into Lithuania in 1919 - in I think the Kalvaria or Marijampole areas that are adjacent to Kovno and 2) near Augustow on the Augustow canal, which is in the present day Suwalki gubernia area but close to Kovno.  I think the name has something to do with oak trees.

I visited the Augustow Lebowe in 2000, hoping to find out which Lebowe my great aunt's husband came from, this or the other one.  I still do not know as it is a common place name in the area.

Janowiec, Poland - researching the CUKIER family #poland

Daniella Alyagon

I am researching the  CUKIER family from Janowiec.
Using Geneteka I have managed to identify some early 1820's records in church books, however, I am having some problems with the post 1826 records as the JRI-Poland indexation provides very little information and my Polish reading abilities are not sufficient in order to find my way through 236 records identified only by the name of the person without any information on parentage or age.

I was wandering if there is any additional information for Janowiec which is not online.

In addition when looking for early records (c. 1820’s) on JRI-Poland, I have noticed that the index includes solely names without parents.  Is there a full extraction project on going?

Is there a book of residents for Janowiec?

Thank you,
Daniella Alyagon

Dear Group

I wondered if the JewishGen subscribers may be interested in reading my brother Melbourne writer, Leon Silver’s latest book published by Simon & Schuster titled, ‘The Miracle Typist’. It’s a true story of Leon’s father-in-law Tolek Klings, who was conscripted into the Polish army in the Second World War. However, the army is rife with anti-Semitism and Tolek is relentlessly tormented. What follows is an extraordinary odyssey that will take Tolek – via a daring escape from a Hungarian internment camp – to Palestine where his ability to touch-type earns him the title of ‘The Miracle Typist’, then on to fight in Egypt, Tobruk and Italy.
