Varga <e.varga@...>

l.Cholent is called "sholet" in Hungary and is quite a popular item on
the menu of (non-jewish) restaurants too.
The preparation I know - which I learned >from my mother and
mother-in-law- who both came >from the Nitra area of Western Slovakia -
is similar to Louis Schonfeld's but there is definitely more Navy or
kidney beans in it .As I vaguely remember, after it was prepared it was
taken to the baker and was slowly cooked in the oven there. Several
eggs unpeeled were important ingredients- the
eggwhite took on a light brown color after the 12 hours of slow
cooking. We called the stuffed gooseneck "Haelsli".

Several weeks ago, someone >from out of the New York City
area asked if anyone living within the area would
volunteer to photograph some graves in Beth David
Cemetery, Elmont, New York. I offered to do so when the
weather improved. It has and may be getting better.
Would the person who asked please re-send me your name/e-
mailo address (I had it and lost it) so I can take the
pix for you within the next couple of weeks.

Please reply privately.

Steerage Conditions - Congressional Investigation #belarus

One of the best, and arguably horrifying, accounts I have ever read about
steerage crossing is found at the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies Website.

In an article entitled "Steerage Conditions," it details the reports of the
US Immigration Commission before Congress in 1911, where undercover agents,
disguised as immigrants, travelled on 12 immigrant ships.

Here is the link

http://www.balchinstitute.org/online_resources_1/html/intromigration.html

or if it doesn't come through as a link, this is the address:

http://www.balchinstitute.org

then go to "Online Resources",
then "Destination U.S.A."
then "Steerage Experience"
then "Reports of the Immigration Commission"

In addition to the Congressional report, there are first hand
immigrant accounts, as well as advertising >from the period,
detailing transportation to the US and Canada.
A most interesting and informative article and site.

vital records indexes #general

Sheridan Kern <SheridanSquare@...>

Another approach when working in the NYC Municipal Archives: Check the
"soundex" listings. They have those on Microfilm indexes for birth records
and death records. I found my great aunt Mary Eisenstadt's birth record
that way. It was under "Isaanstock." All other family information
matched -- parents' given names, address, etc. so that I know it is the
correct one.

Irving Edelman is trying to learn about his family roots in Kovno and

Hi,

They were: Elias Pohl (no dates), his wife Sarah (no surname and date).
Their son was Elias Pohl *18.4.1796. He married Eva Brandeis (born

16.3.1841, Prague. She married Simon Lang(no dates). Their daughter Lucia
Lang was born 5.1.1871 and died 3.4.1946 in Prague.
Simon Lang's parents were Josef Lang (no dates) and Elisabeth Kraus (no dates).

I hope very much that someone can help me with the search for my ancestors
or can give me advices how to be successful with my research.

Thank you very much for your help,

Searching for Marilyn (Pofcher) Cohen of Mass. & NH #general

kasakaplan@...

I am trying to locate Marilyn H. Cohen (nee Pofcher), born 1925 in Revere,
Massachusetts. Her parents were Dr. Joseph Pofcher and Fanny Winthrop. She
married Milton F. Cohen September 1947 in Brookline, MA, and had three
children. Their last known address was in Manchester, NH in 1963, but
probably lived there for a number of years after that.

Any leads to contact Marilyn, her husband, or children will be sincerely
appreciated. Please respond privately. Thank you.
