But my family, which always regarded itself as of a certain distinction,
has a Hebrew surname, and we took it in the early 19th century. It exists
in many different transliterations in many different branches of the family
(Yohalem, Yaglom, Jaglom, etc.) But it's all the same Hebrew word.

Re: Need translation help - Synagogue photo caption #yizkorbooks

Paul Wolf <pwolf1@...>

According to my pocket Hebrew-English dictionary:

The first word is translated "photo" or "image."
The second word is translated "improvisation" or "on the spot."
Nothing matches the third word.

Is there any clue >from the context?

I am trying to translate part of the caption under a photo of the Kremenets
Great Synagogue. The photo appears in one of the Kremenets, Ukraine Yizkor
books. In transcription, the Hebrew reads:

tsadi-yod-lamed-vav-mem aleph-lamed-tav-resh
kof-tsadi-yod-zayin-heh

Posad Yanov Gminy Potok Zloty #poland

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I seek help understanding the name of a city on a birth certificate.
The certificate, in Russian, is >from 1886, >from the town of Zarki
(near Czestochowa). In the certificate, it indicates that the
father, Lejzer Englender, is >from this city:

Posad Yanov Gminy Potok Zloty

or perhaps:

Posad Yanov Gliny Potok Zlotyj

Does anyone know what city this is? The last three words seem to
mean "Golden Stream of Clay." But what does this mean??

I have placed this certificate on the web. Please choose the size
that is best for you:

Janow (east of Czestochowa) #poland

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I am beginning to investigate the town of Janow (just east
of Czestochowa). In the LDS lists, it appears as:

town: Janow
province: Katowice

I notice that only these two films exist:

B, 1863-1882, film 1,646,267
BMD, 1880/1888, film 1,646,268

Are there more that are not listed? Perhaps this town only
had Jewish residents starting in 1963?

Is anyone else researching Janow?

Thank you!

Suggested Reading On Sea Travel #poland

Nancy Ring-Kendrick <kendrickkreation@...>

Hi Everyone!

I purchased a book this week that may answer a question I see posted
here frequently. That question is "what was it like for our ancestors
on their sea voyage(s)?" My purchase answers that question and many
many more. My suggestion is as a common courtesy to subscribers and I
have no financial interest in the book or its publisher. Here are the
details.
"The Sway of the Grand Saloon - A Social History of the North Atlantic"
Author: John Malcomb Brinnin
Published by Barnes and Noble Books 2000 by arrangements of the estate
of John Brinnin
ISBN 0-7607-2081-9
It begins with sea travel on the Atlantic in 1818 and continues through
to the 1900's which was considered the "Golden Age" of the great
liners. Well-known names of travelers include: Jenny Lind, Lily
Langtry, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oscar Wilde and Mark Twaine, to name a
few. Depicted are reckless competitions between oceanic companies,
disasters, and human drama. Of course the Titanic and the Lithuania are
included, but so too are numerous vessels >from 1818 to the 1960's.
Several pictures are within the contents of the book. It's a hardback
and with index aprox. 600 pages in length. It's great reading and
educational too. Enjoy if you do decide to get it.

Correction: Suggested Reading on Sea Travel #poland

Nancy Ring-Kendrick <kendrickkreation@...>

Hi Everyone!

As Judith Romney Wagner pointed out in an e-mail to me there is an error
in the original post. The Lusitania should have been the ref. instead
of "Lithuania." Hopefully, most of you knew that this was an oversight
when proof reading and something I actually think spell check may have
changed. The sentence should have read "Of course the Titanic and the
Lusitania" are included.

Thank you for your time.
