Joe, Marcia and others--

I recently received an almost-identical letter to the one in your post >from
the Warsaw archives, responding to my request for a record >from Zareby
Koscielne now stored in Pultusk, and returning to me the bank check I had
sent them for the copy.

I was able to figure out that there was a new procedure dated in July 2000,
but I was not clear whether I should do something or just wait.

It appears they are going back to the old way of doing things, but giving us
some slack for "works in progress." Thank you for bringing up the subject
and clarifying it for me and others.

ASTER, OSTER - ZWANG Name Relationship #general

Shel <sbercovich@...>

I'm puzzled.

When searching for ZWANG using the Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex in the FTJP
and the JGFF, I get ASTER, ESTER, ESTRY, OSTER, OSTRY as possible
matches. Could anyone suggest the relationship between ZWANG and these
other names?

Also, when searching for ECHTER using the D-M Soundex in the FTJP and
JGFF, I get a strange (for me, at least) result -- CASTRO. What would be
the relationship there?

As well, in using Ancestry.com's version of Beider's Russian Surnames, I
can find _no_ reference to the name ECHTER (or any
spelling/pronunciation variations). Can anyone suggest what the name
_might_ have been and/or where it came from?

Both ECHTER and ZWANG come >from the Tulchin/Balta/Krovye Ozero area of
Ukraine in the late 19th c.

TIA,

Shel Bercovich

Re: Directories #general

WWW

It would not be unusual to still be listed in a city directory years after
someone passed away. I have even seen entries in older Minneapolis directories giving the person's date of death. In another example, my great-grandfather Abraham Markus is listed in the 1898 Minneapolis city directory as "Moved to Jerusalem."

I have a family member who is still listed in the current Minneapolis city directory, even though he passed away in 1982. His widow uses it
for security purposes. It is interesting when someone calls and asks
for a Mr. who has been gone for 19 years.

Don't forget that some women leave their listing under the name of the male
they used to live with. Women sometimes feel it's not safe to list a phone
number and address under their own names. I personally know of two artists
several years deceased whose names you can still find in telephone
directories. In one case, the phone number is for the widow of the deceased
artist; in the other, it's the phone number of a daughter of the deceased
artist.

Just a note about city directories. I was recently using the Brooklyn city
directory 1933/34. My uncle was listed in it. He passed away in April
1932.

It would be interesting to know exactly when the data for the directories
was collected.

Need help with Hebrew translation (ViewMate) #lithuania

Robert Mandelbaum

A while back I posted a message to the JewishGen discussion group, explaining that my great-great-grandparents, Selig and Chana Dvera SAMILSON, came to New York >from Vilna, Russia, between 1880 and 1890. They left their two young sons, Louis (who later changed his surname to ELSON) and Abraham (my great-grandfather), in America, and went to Jerusalem to die. I sought advice on how I could determine what happened to them, and received an extremely helpful reply, advising me to write to the Chevra Kadisha (burial society) of Jerusalem.

from the Chevra Kadisha I received a letter back in Hebrew, which I, unfortunately, cannot read. Interspersed among the Hebrew,
the letter contains what appear to be two English dates. I assume
that the letter contains the exact dates of death of each of my two
great-great-grandparents, as well as, perhaps, their places of death and
burial, or even their fathers' names or other, unsurmised goldmines.

I have now scanned the letter and posted it to the JewishGen ViewMate web site at <http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html>. The particular file number of my letter is VM418, which can be accessed directly by going to <http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview133.html#vm418>. Please e-mail any responses directly to me at rmandelbau@aol.com.

Interpreting ALD records #lithuania

Lance Greenberg <lgreenberg@...>

In the All Lithuania Database, there is a household with
the following residents: Iudel Iaspan (and wife Leah), his
brother Movsha (and wife Mera), and Zelman Kaper (and wife
Gitsla).

My question concerns this third couple with the different
surname. Under what circumstances would they be living in
the same household as the other 2 couples (who are related)?
Is it possible (and if so, how likely) that Gitsla is a sister
to Iudel and Movsha? Or was it common for households to have
unrelated boarders? This data comes >from the 1816 revision
list.

Any thoughts?

TIA,

Lance Greenberg
